Author Topic: Holy Crap, I have RATS!  (Read 793 times)

I agreed to watch a friend's rats while she's home for the week, and since her three are no stranger to mine, they're all playing together. One is the daddy of all the black rats I have, and one she has, and the capped has always played with them too.
So now I have 14 rats in my studio. Here's the breakdown.
6 black berks- (all children of Anubis and Skittles) 4 males (Fred, Rizzo, Gabriel, and Sirus) and 2 females (Widget and Percephony)
2 fawn hooded- 1 male (Max) 1 female (Skittles)
1 fawn self- Simon the Dumbo
1 blue berk- Female (Muffin)
1 black capped-Male (Moe)
1 black hooded-female (Domino)
1 black self- male (Anubis)
and last but not least
1 PEW-female (Indiana)

It's exciting here with 8 boys and 6 girls. I think there's a transition there from 11 to 14, from lots of rats to too many rats. I love them all dearly, but at least the other three are just here for a week.
Skittles seems to recognize Anubis, but wants nothing to do with him, Fred and his brothers seem to know each other, and their Uncle Moe is just always around.
One big happy ratty family.
*phew* I'm tired already.

Oh absolutely! I'm a crazy ratty mom, not an irresponsible one. I let them sniff though their cage bars.
The "children" of Skittles and Anubis are almost a year old. I bred them before I knew what I know now about breeder ethics and rescues etc. I'd never have another litter of rats, because there  are so many already out there that need homes. I feel guilty about the one litter, and yet I kept all the babies, except for placing 3 with friends and one with my mother, so I see them all the time. I could never let babies I raised go somewhere I wouldn't see them.
But yes, I absolutely will be keeping them seperate.  Smiley

Is "herd" the correct word?  I've always wondered that.  I know you have a gaggle of geese, a murder of crows, a pride of lion, etc, but what is a group of rats called?

Rats are my obsession!

I only have six, and two do not go exploring, and one explores but only on the bed.  But yet there is still something very appealing of looking in four diff directions and seeing rats.  When I have my own place, I will definitely have closer to 11 then 6..

Oooh, rats galore! I wish I had that many, I would just want to be covered in them (oh and then take a photo of myself of course to scare the kids at school). Have fun!

Heh.....I think the correct term is a "mischief" of rats.  Kinda appropriate, when you think of what a group of ratties is capable of....

I was under the impression that the word "pack" was used to describe lots of ratties.

Mischief is a good one.

Pack rat is a term acknowledging the fact that they are always stashing things away.

Dear God, they certainly are a mischief!
Mike can rest assured that once the visitors go home, I won''t sucumb to GgMR for quite some time. 11 really is all I can handle.

I thought it was bad before....
My *other* rat owner friends just  called, and they need me to watch their rats because their property manager is coming, and the rats are not legal pets.

So tonight I'll have 16 rats, and wed I'll have none (MY property manager is coming)
Oh the ratty rollercoaster.

Oy veh!

I always thought that it was silly when apartments say no pets. I can understand about dogs and birds, and outside cats/
But what about declawed cates and cages animals? I can't figure out why they wouldn't be okay.
I'm also over my limit. I'm only supposed to have 4 rats, and I have 8!
