I've just got back from my first visit at my new vets. I had to take Mouse because she has a chest infection and a gooey eye.
Well, it was well worth the money (and cheaper than my old vet!).
The receptionist who hates rats is converted. The vet turned round saying 'Rose doesn't like...' only to find Rose holding her and saying how lovely she is

Obviously Mouse got Baytrill for her chest, which is what I expected, so that's good, and she volunterred that the stress of losing her sister and moving house probably contributed.
Whilst I was there I explained about Scooby's death shortly after receiving Ivermec, and I asked if the Ivermec could have caused it. She said the usual about it not being licensed for rats but admitted that she is aware of cases where Ivermec has resulted in death. She says it usually happens when they've had it before and the 'poison' builds up in their bloodstream or sometimes they'll just have a bad reaction to the medication itself with similar results.
I can't blame the vet. They had to treat him, he was crawling with mites again and had deep scratches on his back. I only wish there was a safer alternative and that people took rats seriously, then Scooby might still be with us
