My rat has pneumonia and is so sick
«
on:
December 14, 2004, 10:37:04 AM »
Cricket wasn't feeling himself this weekend, he was sleeping more than usual and just lying there, but yesterday morning he was horrible and wouldn't even move or barely lift his head or eat when I gave something to him, so I got him to the vet at 3 PM and we got some Baytril (sp?) to give to him two times a day. But the vet said he was so "listless" that he wasn't sure it was pneumonia or something more serious.
He's been on the meds since yesterday and I'm trying to get him to eat and drink but he's still so sick. Can anyone give me some suggestions? Do you think I waited too long to go to the vet and now he's too sick to get better?
I love him so much.

One other thing I wanted to ask about is that since Cricket got sick yesterday,
I've noticed his eyes seem to be more watery than usual. Does anyone know what
this might mean? It's not the red discharge, they just look watery.

I've had a few come back from that stage, so don't give up yet. The important thing is to keep him warm. When mine are feeling under the weather, I usually rig something up so I can carry them around with me, and share my body heat. Also, feeding warm food (heated up baby food, oatmeal with honey, etc.) can help, as it boost body temp, as well as being more scented, and therefore more tempting. If you haven't got any, get some nutrical, and see if he'll take that, and Boost or Ensure (human vitamin drinks) are also good ways to get calories into him, and he'll need them all if he's going to have the energy to pull through.
As far as the watery eyes go, I think that's pretty normal when they're feeling ill, so I wouldn't worry about that aspect too much.

Thank you so much for writing me back. I'm definitely trying to not give up hope, but right now it's just really hard. I've never had a rat this sick, and I guess I was expecting him to seem so much better this morning, and he doesn't.
Do you think carrying him around would be good? It's only that, I feel like he doesn't get enough undisturbed sleep if I have him with me all the time. This morning I was holding him for about an hour and a half, but I feel like I move around too much for him to really get any rest.
I'mg oing to hopefully get some stuff at the store for him today (some watermelon to keep him hydrated, some Ensure, etc.) and hopefully he'll feel much better by tonight. I'm just scared to leave him.
Thanks for letting me know about the eyes. I noticed it yesterday and was going to ask the vet when I was on the way (in the car) but by the time I got there and with being upset and everything, that just slipped my mind.

Well, the way I've always felt with my kids is that they'd rather be close to me than in undisturbed rest alone in the cage. They will get the rest they need, and they need your body heat more, not to mention the comfort of having you close.

Cricket is lying sort of on his side right now, breathing kind of hard but not making any noise
and his toes on all four feet are curled up. Does this mean anything?

Pnemonia in rats is very serious. That statement is a bit underated c
This is the part that has me confused. Did he hear any sounds in his lungs? Is he congested? Wheezing? Breathing fast? I dont know what made him diagnose him as having pnemonia.....did he mention that?
There are also many viruses that rats get that are bad and antibiotics can help fight off secondary infections.
As I stated to you on a different forum this morning, I would like to see him on a combo of meds like amoxil and baytril.
What about the rats he lives with?? Keep an extra close eye on any rats you have too.

You need to get this rat to the vet now unless you tell me that he lays on his side alot.....
when rats are having a hard time breathing they lay in odd positions from laying on ther sides to extending their neck out and also they will climb up on an object and hang partially over it to aid in breathing.
It sounds to me like this rat is having some distress. Look close at his feet......are they nice and pink or are they darker, like bluish to purple?
Please bring him back in and NOW....maybe you can call there while your driving and also ask about an ER vet to see if that may be better in this situation.
Good luck! Please let us know how he is doing..

But the vet said he was so "listless" that he wasn't sure it was pneumonia or something more serious.
Yesterday I couldn't hear any sounds in his lungs, but the vet listened and said that he did. He had this little book he was looking in, and he said there was some kind of 'rat and mouse sickness' that he might have, but that he could also have pneumonia so we'd try the medicine to see if it would help. He said that the book he had, he couldn't find anything else about that anywhere but in that book. Cricket isn't weezes but he's making a little noise when I get him out and hold him, but not when he's sleeping, and sometimes he breathes fast, but sometimes it looks more normal.
My other boys seem fine at this point, a little freaked out about Cricket I think because this hasn't happened to them before, but they are acting normal.
His feet are a good color, and they are relaxed now. I thought it was odd that he'd have his back feet curled but sometimes he does that to his front ones as well.
Right now I don't think it'd help to take him in, because the vet who works with rats isn't even there, and he's in the same shape he was yesterday, he'd probably tell me to take Cricket home and try the medicine at least until tomorrow or something. Do you think I should take him to a different vet?
When I posted about his breathing and his feet, I'd just had him out trying to feed him, do you think it'd be normal for him to be a little out of breathe after being handled if he has pneumonia? Now he looks a lot more relaxed. I have the vaporizer in the room, but it's on the bed across from the cage, do you think it'll help him there?

I suggest a shot of Amikacin injections for several days along (3 max) along with amoxil and baytril at the vets.......the ER vet along with oxygen treatments.
A rat and mouse disease? He may have meant SDA which....well thats a shot in the dark. I wont go there yet....too long and detailed...but your other rats would have it too by now if he had SDA or Sendai.
You could find another vet but I feel he may need someone now....it has been just about 24 hours since he started the meds...and usually in 3 days there should be an improvement, but they should NOT get worse....if anything they stay the same and slowly improve.
I still suggest the above meds along with oxygen therapy and leaving him overnight for treatments if this is possible. Keeping him warm is vital. You can do this with bags of heated rice too, by filling a bag with rice, putting it in the sock and nuking in the microwave to warm it. It will generate heat nicely and I bet Cricket cuddles close. Make sure its not too hot though of course.
The stools may be green due to the bacteria and the baytril mix...or he may have had something green? Treats or snacks?
I wish I could help more. I have been through this stuff so much I know it like the back of my hand, unfortunately. Even the so called Rat and mouse disease that your vet suggested....24 rats had it, 17 were kept in the hosptial and a total of 9 died...all within about 8 weeks. It was really bad for all of us!
If you need me...just PM me or post here.

Sandy,
I'm not sure what he meant, he didn't say SDA, but I've heard of that but don't know much about it. He read me this list of symptoms and one of them was "listless" and he said that Cricket could have that, but didn't say much else about it, and I was so upset I didn't think to ask because he said he could also have pneumonia and I assumed he probably did.
He doesn't seem to be getting worse, he seems to me that he's getting better and when I look at him again he doesn't anymore. That sock idea is a good one, do you think the other boys might rip it open though? I'll try that in a bit.
I still suggest the above meds along with oxygen therapy and leaving him overnight for treatments if this is possible. Keeping him warm is vital. I can't think of any green foods he ate, but now that I think about it, when he had his temperature taken at the vet his stool was normal and after we got home it was green, so it could be from the medicine couldn't it?
Thank you so much for everything, and I'm sorry for your losses. I know this is definitely something we all wish we didn't have to go through!

Now that I think of it...maybe your just real scared and all of this being posted makes me believe he is getting worse yet since its the first time your rats have been very sick it is scary for you so you are looking at a sick little boy and its just....scary.
Hopefully he is not getting worse and if you think he isnt, thats all I can go by. Baytril is a GOOD DRUG dont get me wrong, but I have seen it fail often in cases that it is not mycoplasmosis so if he does not improve within 72 hours (I dont mean be up and around back to normal, but he should be feeling better) IF NOT, he needs something else either a new med OR something to go with the baytril like amoxil.

Well I am definitely very scared and like you said, this is the first time I've ever been through this so I have no idea what to expect and the way he's acting might be the way any pretty sick rat could act but it just sounds more terrible through my eyes because I'm freaking out. LOL
I don't know if he's getting worse, sometimes I think he is, sometimes I think he's getting better, it's just weird. I think he might just be pretty tired because all of this has to be very stressful on him. Soon I'll get him up and take him into the bathroom for some steam and try to get him to eat and then let him rest a lot of the rest of the night and I'll let you know how he's doing then if you'd like.

When I had two sick boys I kept them going by giving them Ensure. Thats the only thing they would drink/eat.
It took about two weeks of that before they started eating again. They were getting Baytril twice a day and all the Ensure they could drink.
We are here for you if you need us. Keep in contact with your vet, keep him warm and try the Ensure or even Boost. Its kinda pricey ($8.00 for six pack here) but was worth it in the end.
Keep your chin up. We are pulling for your baby and you.

Yes let me know. Check your private messages. I sent you a PM with my number in case you want to give me a call.
Try to stay calm too. I know its hard. You get this ugly feeling in the pit of your stomach...a feeling of impending doom...it stinks I know. Cricket will sense your uneasy feeling and it will relfect on him so try to be calm so he can feel calm too.
I never did ask...is he having sneezing attacks by chance?

Well so far Cricket seems to want other things as well so hopefully he won't end up getting that bad. I'm sorry about your boys ... they are all right now aren't they? I certainly hope so!
I'm about to give Cricket some food now and see how things go. Hopefully well.
Thank you so much and I really am praying that he'll be all right.

Thank you for the PM and the number, you never know, I just might take you up on the offer and give you a call if I need someone to talk to. I'm not good with talking to new people on the phone but being emotional gets me to do things I normally wouldn't! Thank you so much for being so sweet.
It's funny you say that Cricket will sense that, because I haven't really cried in front of him at all, but as soon as I leave the room I burst into tears, it's odd because I don't even try not to cry when I'm with him, it just calms me down a bit I suppose.
Cricket IS sneezing, but not necessarily having sneezing fits. Every once in a while he'll let one out though. Does that mean something?

Sneezing is normal for anyone....its the constant achoo achoo achoo achoo in a row and several times a day that you want to look for. Otherwise, they are simply clearing their little noses from irritants etc...
Well anyhow, keep up the good work. Your doing a good job taking care of Cricket and he loves you for it I am sure.

No, he's not having sneezing attacks, but I noticed sometimes when he does sneeze he makes a little noise, like a squeak.
I hope I'm doing all I can because I feel as if I'm not doing enough.
If I need to get a hold of you, I'll know where to go and thank you SO much for everything. Even if things don't go how I would want them to, I'll know I did everything I could and had so many people to help me figure that out.

Cricket's now making a crackling noise every once in a while, as if something is in his lungs that he needs to cough it. It goes away after a few minutes, but I've already noticed it twice.
Good or bad?

He's not doing so good right now, at least, I don't think so. He doesn't respond very much and the last few times I tried to get him to eat, he wouldn't do it. Do you think he might just be too tired to eat or drink right now? Right now he's sleeping and his breathing looks okay I think, but he's got his eyes open a little bit.
Do you think there is still hope that he might make it through? Someone said that they could get worse before they get better even after starting medicine.
To top it off, after I tried to feed him I left his syringe on the couch and my puppy got a hold of it. Does anyone know how to convert .5 cc into ml because that's the only other syringe we have at this time of the night.
I'm so scared Cricket will die and I don't know what else to do.

cc's and ml's are the same thing.
Are you still able to get some Boost or Ensure into him, and his meds? If so, there's still hope. The biggest problem for sick rats is dehydration, so the liquid is very important, and obviously, the meds are important. Have you called the vet to see if they can give other recommendations, possibly an injection of meds or fluids, or putting him on oxygen for a while? It sounds like he could use some more supportive care, especially if you're starting to hear crackling when he's breathing...

Sounds like you need to call your vet and tell him/her whats going on. Good Luck and keep us posted.
Try to get him to eat or drink something. Maybe warm up some baby food so he can smell it. Try putting some on your finger and get him to lick it off
