I'm a llama!

« on: December 16, 2004, 11:51:14 AM »

178 ratties were dropped off at San Francisco Animal Care and Control yesterday. They all seem to be in good health and will be vet checked in the next two days. They were shoved into 3 small dog crates but despite being a bit dirty and smelly they are doing well. They have good tempermants although a bit timid due to previous conditions. I am usually the foster mom for any rats not adopted but in this case i need a lot of help. I am posting here in hopes of finding some foster homes or permanent homes. There is a small adoption fee which covers the spay/neuter charge. I will be in the Los Angeles area sometime in january so i could bring some down. Please feel free to email me with any suggestions and please pass this information along. Reposting would be great. Thanks.

Best of luck .... they sure do make a CUTE rat pile.  SIGH ... hopefully none are pregnant, but that would be too much of a miracle to ask for.  Sad

OMG, that's not what California needs right now. All of the rescues are so full of rats, it's not even funny.

I was hoping to possibly foster some ratties in the new year. Depending on when you're down near LA (I won't be around the 1st week of January), I may be able to take at least two. I can't promise I'll be able to take any, but I wanted to speak up in hopes of keeping you from feeling completely overwhelmed! I hope I'm able to at least do that for you!

Please keep us updated. This is so terrible- like Menagerie said, this is the last thing CA needs. Sad

there are several that are prego and a few straggler babies that are not yet weaned. we are going to have to put those ones down unfortunately and try and spay all other females as fast as possible. we do have 18 that are going to new homes on saturday. it is a start. thank you for all your replies, i will be contacting those in the los angeles area soon and will keep everyone updated.

Why do the babies need to be euthanized?  Are the mothers not there?

And I noticed a litter box - does that actually work?  I would love it if it did.

I'm sure Mindy will be calling me to see if there is anything that I can help her with.  I hope we/she/us can take some for you.

Good luck.

I want to know the same thing....why do some need to be euthanized? I MAY be able to help out also. I'll get ahold of Mindy also and see what she plans on doing.

okay to answer the euthenasia questions. yes there are several babies without mothers. they came in such crowded conditios that it is hard to pair mother to baby. we did our best but the little ones are not looking to good. anyone that looks ill will need to be put down. We do not have the resources to save each and every rat. there are 178. even if i found foster homes for 10 rats at a time that would still be 18 foster homes. The shelter is working with me to save as many as possible but we must be realistic. this is a city shelter with one room for small animals, only a handful of rat cages and a very full room. today i have had a good response and hopefully have found homes for around 24 rats. this is a very good start. I know it is horrible that some must be put down but i have to be hopeful and try and save as many as possible. thanks for all your help. oh and yes litter box training has worked out well for the majority of rats. there is some info about litter training on ratfanclub.org

The babies will do fine if they're atleast 2.5-3 weeks old (as long as they have some KMR and kitten food along with blocks). Or are these little babies with only fuzz that would need to be hand raised? I wish I could help. I'm in MO though. Cry

some are fuzz babies other are almost 3 weeks i would say. We have a few people lined up that are going to take the 3 weekers but as you know a run of the mill person who has no rat experience would not know what to do. so hopefully all the little little guys will go to a rescuer.

How horrible. I wish I lived just a little bit closer, then I could foster a few of the babies. Gypsy and Thistle are still lactating from their past litter  Cry

I have a friend interested in two males! Preferably a fawn or beige, and a black. She lives down in So. CA by me, so we'd both have to wait for the Los Angeles run. Two questions... Would it be possible for me to pick up her ratties at the same time as mine (if I'm able to take some)? And what is the adoption fee for the males?

Also, I was looking at SF Animal Care and Control's website, and there's a lone nuetered male, Darren. Is he still there? I feel so bad for him being all alone. Half want to take him and one of the other rescues.  Puppy Dog Eyes:

Also, do you have a general list of ages and colors (not one-by-one, um, like ages range from 3 weeks to...? and we have [insert several colors not already shown here])? I hope that's not too much to ask!! Thanks for doing all this work! I hope we're helping!  Heart

wishing for rats
thanks. your friend contacted me about adopting 2 rats. darren the rat is still there. if you wanted him that would be fantastic. right now there is no info on the acc website about the ratties but hopefully by saturday. the adoption fee for males is $10 and that includes the neuter charge and of course he will get a vet exam. i am hoping to get to LA either the first or second week of january. the babies are 3 weeks to approx 8 months. the colors vary. basically agouti, chocolate, beige, fawn, chinchilla, blue, black, grey. i know these are not the correct color terms but you get the picture. you guys are all really great. let me know who you are interested in. age wise and color wise and i can take a few more pictures tomorrow when i go to the shelter. thanks. oh and yes you can pick up rats for your friend as well.

I try remaining calm in these situations but still feel the need to choke the life out of the person that let this happen.  They are beautiful and all I can do is wish them luck, being all the way in Oklahoma  Kiss

Do you know if Darren is for sure 2 years old? Is that what whoever surrendered him said or an estimate? I PMed a question about a cagemate for him, as I'm nervous thinking of getting him a cagemate if he really is 2 (pretty old for a rattie, right?). I want to get him soooo bad, just waiting for the right time to ask my 'rents. Smiley

You're doing so good placing these babies! Bless you! Heart Looking forward to more pictures, too.  Hyper

elle,wishing and everyon else,
i emailed regarding darren and as for the LA run i am going to visit my parents in ventura (not really LA) but i will be going down to hollywood, santa monica, sf valley areas as well. anaheim is still an hour or so but maybe we can meet up halfway. i also am trying to see if i can get some of these guys to san diego so that fenella can foster some. anyone have a contact in LA that is planning a trip to san diego and wouldn't mind some rat companions? thanks again you guys. rattie ratz is picking up some little guys today as well as several other adopters. we received some money for a few new and larger cages and things are looking up. our biggest problem is getting these ladies spayed it is pricey and time consuming especially when the majority of rats are females and most likely pregnant. tonight i will be posting new pics. really. thanks.

Bluerat, would the shelter be able to use a HUGE bale of aspen shavings? I just remembered my friends have one from their previous rats. It's opened, but barely any of it was used at all. It's enclosed in a cardboard paper type material. I'd be happy to donate it, as I use Carefresh myself, and we didn't know anyone else who could use it. Smiley Let me know!

When in January are you visiting your parents?  I am in LA and can get them to Fenella if the timing is right.  I just won't be able to do it until a weekend after the 1st.

blueratz, once they are in the LA/Orange County area getting them down here to San Diego isn't that big of a problem as we meet up with Mindy and the RMCA folks on a pretty regular basis.

okay lots of new info. wishing-no need for any shavings we have plenty of bedding but thank you all the same. dreamingqpixie-yes we still have rats available the ones you want actually and i can send you pix tomorrow. shantidass-trip to LA hopefully the weekend of the 8th. menagerie-yes we could probably use your help unless shantidass can do it.
okay and for the update. i am hoping to go to LA the weekend of jan 8th probably from the 7th-12th. i do not really want to drive to san diego and would love your help. there are a total of 58 rats still available (pretty good, huh?) 26 females and 32 males. 8 of these females are possibly pregnant. not showing signs but are definitely of age and may have gotten frisky. we would like to get these to foster homes in the bay area but i may just take them all and wait to see if they are in fact prego. we have 5 large boys and 24 boys that are 3-6 months old. 16 really young females that are probably 99.9% not pregnant. and a few misc other boys and girls. also we had several rats with lice. I will be dosing them with ivermectin on monday and will continue with the weekly dose so they should be fine in a few weeks. i have a meeting with the shelter vp on tuesday to see who we still have available. I will need to know by monday evening who in San Diego and LA wants which rats (Elle i have yours written down and will find some tomorrow). If you have an idea of who you may like i can take some photos of a few specific ones. I want to be able to let the shelter know who will have a home, this will help with keeping the euthenasia to a minimum as the numbers will keep dropping. so far so good on that end though. email me with any other info you need or with your name, number, email and who you would like to adopt and if you need them neutered or spayed. there are very few girls that are large enough to be spayed but most boys are ready for neutering. the vet will be out of town for most of the holiday but i will try to get everyone done if possible. thank you all so much. pics below in order are baby girls, young boys and adult males. sabrina rattypaws@yahoo.com
