Hello All, I recently went to a pet store and seen a cute white rat and I went to pet it, been curious about them after seeing them on a animal show and realised just how friendly they really are, well then I noticed she had new little babies under her, a total of 5, I asked them do they go with the Momma if I was too buy her, how would that work, and they explained to me that "Pinkies" are hard to come buy and they would be snake feed, I was sick to my stomach and ended up getting the momma and all her babies, Now I am realising its not easy finding homes for them. They have their eyes open, really playful, still nursing on Mom, also drinking out of the water and trying to eat on their own, This is my first experience with Rats and all the pet stores I talk to tell me that they are guaranteed to be snake feed.  That not many people buy them as pets. I live in a small apt and already have 3 cats that I have rescued, I am needing to find them homes. I am in Indpls In. I dont mind keeping the momma and a baby. But I MUST find homes for 4 of the babies, not sure on the sex. I have a baby curled up on me now as I type this, I have contacted schools to see if they can be like a room mascot. I know in my heart I did the right thing but I am starting to get nervous. Anyone can help please let me know, I am so scared that they will end up as feed or some research lab. The momma is so nice, she has never once tried to bite me, she has been the best little Mommy.  Can take photos if anyone would like to see them. Cindy  scooby_cyn@hotmail.com

Where are you from? What colors are the babies? How old are they?

They will only end up as feeders if you take them to a pet store.  And a lab won't buy them from you - so that is not a concern.

How old are the babies?  I can't help you but maybe someone on the board can or knows a rescue in your area.

Good luck.

Hey guys - spoke with Scooby_Cyn in chat and we think we've narrowed down the age range to be nearing or a little over 3 weeks in age, though opinions from more experienced breeders and such might help.  Eyes opened about 5 days ago and they were already growing fur when she brought them home two weeks ago.

Good luck finding them homes, Scooby!  You're doing a great thing for these babies, and it shows how much you care about their well-being.   Heart Heart

I love in Northern Illinois... Undecided
*fingers crossed* I'll try to convince my mother one last time...maybe if I put the emphasis on "snake food" (cry) and "how can you live with the guilt mom?  It's because of you these poor innocent babies...blah blah blah"  Grin
Anyways, I'll keep ya posted.
Will the babies be white?

Hello, I posted earlier, I have 5 babies, they were guaranteed to be snake food, So I took the momma and her 5 babies in hope of finding them a home, I have no problem keeping the mom, figure be harder finding her a home but I am unable to find the babies a home, they are eating on their own, drinking and so very sweet.  First time ever with Rats, I felt like my back was against the wall and decided to take a chance, well I am beginning to realise I may have to take them back to a pet store, I cant keep all of them, Have a small apt, not supposed to have pets and already keeping a stray cat.  I have a huge heart and a kind land lord but feel like a may be pushing my luck, I have photos of them, I have the mom and the babies together in a 10 gallon aquarium, I dont want them breeding and I know thats to small of a set up, I cant sink any money into buying more cages, so times are getting desperate, No schools are interested.  Please some contact me if you may be able to help or have suggestions, Thanks so much, Cindy Day, Indpls. Also if its not too long of a drive, I would be willing to meet someone half way over a weekend, I want the best for them.  Its tearing me up knowing time is running out. Email me and I will send photos of them, not sure how to upload here.  scooby_cyn@hotmail.com

Scooby was in chat and said that two of the babies are rex.  We're working on getting pictures posted.  Any foster homes out there, at least??  Or could someone lend a cage setup??

Wow, are those some adorable babies!
Surely someone can give them a good home. I wish that I weren't so far away in times like these, (but at the same time extremely glad too-14 boys). I think it is incredible that you opened your heart to these guys and I wish you all the luck in finding someone to take them in.

I've let everyone in my meetup group know.  Most of us are only a couple of hours away from you.  Hopefully someone will be able to take them, or at least foster them.  I would be more than happy to find permanent homes for them, but the fiance and I had come to an agreement of only four rats for a while.  I'm trying to convince him to let me take the babies in until we can find them a home.  I'll work on him some more today and hopefully I'll convince him.  Are all of the babies boys?

Just answering for Scooby - yes they are all males.  That makes things a bit easier.

However, its possible momma rat is preggers again(she may have been left in with the male at the pet store), so the sooner the older babies can go, the better.

Thanks guys for trying to help Scooby out.  They're the most adorable little guys and I hope someone can give them a good home.

Where abouts are you? I have sold a lot of my baby rats and now have a cage open, so I could foster one if you can get them up to NH  Wink

I have someone who may be interested in helping you Scooby_cyn!  I gave her your email address, so she should be emailing you soon.  I'm not sure how many she's interested in, but I told her I'd be willing to transport them to her.

Scooby, if you're planning to keep some rats, why not keep two baby boys and find homes for the rest? Smiley That way Mama wouldn't be left all by herself...

Ok here's the update... seems Scooby has her hands full with two young human boys and lots of little ratties, so I'll post in her place Grin

Momma rat had another litter today... 4, maybe 5 babies (thank goodness for such small litters, eh?).  She must have gotten preggers at the pet store before Scooby brought her home.  So far they all have foster homes, and I'm almost positive that the 5 black babies (the ones in the pics) all have forever homes with a principal in Scooby's town who's a rat lover herself.  I'm not positive on that, so don't hold me to it, but thats the last I heard.  Then, momma and NEW babies are being fostered, but they will most likely need homes once they're older.

If you're interested, it'd be best to email Scooby - she's got her hands full at the moment and probably doesn't have time to check through the boards and reply to everyone.  Even if you can just foster, or even help transport, etc., let her know - incase something falls through or someone doesn't want to take more than a few, yanno?

She's done a good job taking care of these guys, and she really cares a lot about them.  I'm glad we've been able to help her so far!  You guys rock!   Party
