Hey guys,

I'm new here Wink. If you have questions, feel free to ask. But I've to warn you, my English is not that good. I'm from Germany.  I thought it might be interesting to see how you keep your rats and on the other hand it might also be interesting for guys to see how we keep our rats.
Here're some pics of my cages:

The meassurements are 180 x 55 cm x 70 cm (I'll have to find out how much that is in inches and feet  )

I bought a quite cheep closet and sew out big wholes in the doors. The bars I fixed are called "Vorsatzgitter" in German actually used by bird breeders, but why shouldn't they be used for purposes other than intended  Grin
Compared to ordinary wire, they are much easier to clean and they're zinc coated. Also, they don't weigh much and this is only my personal opionion: they look much better than ordinary wire  Roll Eyes

The whole closet is lacquered of course. The floors have got holes which allow rats to go from one floor to the other.

What makes the closet a good cage is, that the rats have got much space in it. They can run, climb and play. Also it is quite easy to clean, you simply wipe the floors out. For a while, 10 rats lived in it.

To be honest: the closet has got some cons too. The two doors are much too big. If you open one door, half of the cage is open and some nasty ratties will escape. Even if you clean the cage regularly you can't avoid that it'll stink like hell after only a few years. But on the other hand, such closets are not that expensive, so it won't kill you, if you by a new one in two or three years.

I'm not a friend of wire cages at all (this is only my personal opinion) and I'm convinced that rats like living in closets much more than in ordinary wire cages or aviaries.

That's why I bought a special designed rat cage and replaced my old closet by an UNIDOM:

Here’s a description of my special rat cage called “Unidom”, which is a consistent alternative to wire cages. I've to mention that I don't like wire cages at all, but this is only a matter of personal taste and interest. Unidoms can be integrated in your living room perfectly ‘cause you’re able to choose your favorite color. The color I chose is red (RAL3011). What I love so much are the six doors. You can open one door (it doesn’t make any noise, by the way) and you can “work” in the cage without waking the rats, and the best: you can lock the doors with keys! The doors can be removed easily. Also, the unidom is made of a material which can’t be destroyed by the rats. You can remove the floors and simply clean them with hot water. Dirt is easily removable because it doesn’t stick on the floors and stairs. Speaking about stairs: they can also be removed so cleaning the cage is really very easy. There’s enough area for the rats to run and play and hammocks and other “furniture” can be fixed as well. There are louvers which guarantee a good air circulation.

An unidom has got 100 more considerable advantages compared to ordinary wire cages and only some little disadavantages (I must always grumble Tongue )

Ok, this should be enough information about my unidom for now. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

You can get the unidom in several versions, just ask the producer. If you’d like to see more examples of that wonderful cage, than click HERE: http://www.uni-dom.de/html/privathaltung.html

Please feel free to send me an Email or private message if you have questions

I only have the one little girl at the moment. This is the top level.

Still near the top there is one half shelf above this one.

The the lower level. I have the wheel secured so it wont move with the Tunnel and other bindings. Its welded onto the cage and I cant get it out.

Here's my girls' cage, now that it's got about all it'll (probably) ever have in it:

They have: a pocket hammock, a cube, a double-decker tube (new as of today and they're loving it!), a wheel (they both use it but it took Cricket about 3 months to figure it out, so Allie's a bit jealous that she has to share now Wink ), a wooden bird ladder that before today just went up into nowhere but now goes up and they can use it to get into the tube, a bird rope perch that they use to get up and down to the first balcony, and a PVC pipe concoction that they love to hide and sleep in.

I have one of each at least of the hammocks, cubes and tubes because they like to pee where they sleep and I've figured out that changing them all out every 3 or 4 days is key to keeping the smell down.

And for anyone wondering, they don't have a water bottle, they have a water dish.  The two water bottles I had, one the spout was too heavy for them to work (because I was an idiot and grabbed a 16 oz. one when they were 7 weeks old) and the other one either leaked or didn't give them any at all, depending on how tight it was.  So I used the spare ceramic bowl that I had and they love it, Allie loves to scoop the water up and drink it from her paws

I got this cage off of Kijiji for 200 dollars.  It's huge!  Big enough for 8 rats, but I don't know if that'll ever happen. Tongue  It's super easy to clean and the bottom is grated so any extra waste falls off their floor mats.  I have three rats in this one at the moment, two mismarked siamese, and bareback spotted dumbo double rex boy.  Soon to be added in are my new two fellas, currently in two combined rabbit cages, two rex dumbos, one also bareback and spotted, and the other masked.  Never underestimate buy and sell sites!  I have a living world hanging hide, all kinds of hammocks and a couple baskets, and I just bought an 8 piece fleece Madwzl set from eBay for the winter.  All cloth bedding, and YN in the litterpans.

This is home to my two girls! I think this is a Super Pet cage intended for rabbits, but once your rats get big enough to stay inside the 1" bar spacing, it works well as a rat cage and has lots of room for fun hanging stuff. The cage calculator says it can hold 4 rats. It's a nice big size but easy to clean and reach into all the areas (there's a top door and a front door), and the deep pan and lack of shelves keeps the mess contained (no sprayed pee onto my walls and carpet).

It's sitting on an old TV stand which I use to store extra hammocks, treats, and supplies.

The beautiful bedding is courtesy of Chelsey's Cozies. Smiley

This is The Lab on "move in day" before all the pretty business was in it.  It is currently occupied by three CSIs and a Doctor:

And the Nursary, also on move in day before safety was installed:

Here are some preliminary pix of my boys' Feisty Ferret home.  I'll be making liners, but for now they are using towels.  I also have some cubes on order from wonderrodent. Smiley  I'll post more pix when I do the updates.

Here's my lovely Ferplast Furet Tower.  It's home to six rats - 2 neutered boys and 4 ladies. A connecting tube means they can all move freely between the two halved.  Fortunately, they all enjoy playing and sleeping in both parts so no space is wasted.

Top half from the side:

And with a different selection of hammocks etc.  Most of the hammocks are home-made.

That's my new cage. :3 It's ment for Chinchilas but my 3 girls have SO MUCH room in it.
There's two Hammocks that I made, Cat ball toys with bells in them that's scattered everywhere, some ball thing at the top that i put treats in, a food bowel, two water bottels, a litterpan, some wood thing, and that's it.

I plan on adding some more fun things in there once I get some money.

This is my current cage but I just ordered the Martin-695 which will be their new cage and I am going to sell this one. Anyway, the Martin is going to be a tad smaller than this but it will actually give them more floor space and I'll have a lot of options for hanging things... plus it will be SO much easier to clean so I can't wait for it to arrive.
