Me and my best guy!

« Reply #270 on: May 25, 2008, 08:39:20 PM »

This is my Martin's RUUD cage; up until about two months ago it housed three neutered males, but one passed on and the other two are in a one level retirement XXX Super Pet cage so I fixed this cage up for Arianna, Gideon, Gabriel and Berky Bubbles - three neutered males and one spayed female.  Smiley
In the cage I have two chinchilla bath houses, a waffle house, a rody igloo, a ferret tube, a hammock I made, corner hammock somebody gave me, a sleeping cube that I made, SP wheel because they chew their wodent wheels to pieces, five PVC pipes,  three water bottles, and  litter pans.
I've added a few more things since the pic was taken this morning. All the levels have fleece liners except one.

Mine :>

SP Exotic. It's a bit bare since I have to buy all the accressories myself and I am currently jobless. If I can find the proper materials I will start making some homemade toys.

It houses my two boys, Ian (pew) and Ahren (mismarked bareback) <3

It currently contains:

A brown/blue polka dot hammock (originally meant to be slept in the fluffy side but they don't like it so I flipped it around)
A hanging bird toy with a bell
Three cat jingle balls (they bang these on the cage walls and annoy me all night hehe)
A colourful bird ladder with bells
A bendy rope (they LOVE climbing all over this) to replace the middle ladder
A red ferret tube (i want to hang this someday..)
A constantly rotating array of carboard boxes
A Victoria's Secret bag (lol)
A manly pink water bottle x3
Boyrats (of course!)

And this is my converted half of a birdcage I use as a quarantine cage. This was Ian's cage when I first got him for a month or so while I saved up for the SP. (you can see him in the igloo in this picture.)

It is/was bare. But it's only a temp cage so they aren't living without toys forever! It's currently packed up in the garage :P

I decided to go with a Grotto Style Cage for my boys. I took an old Bookshelf, added doors, cut a few holes in the shelves for ladders, and Voila! According to the Cage Calculator it can house 8 rats, but I currently only have 2 Hooded boys! Blue Dumbo Smile

This is the cage that my 4 rats Pheobe, Millie, Mieko and Neeko are in. My fiancé built it and it cost less than £35  Yellow Cute Laugh instead of over £90 for the store ones that do not have as much room, are difficult to clean and difficult to move around to put things up. It is big enough for 8 rats.

It contains:
1 hammock
1 plastic giant tube
1 cargo netting
1 hanging bridge
1 corner toilet
1 cat scratching post
1 naturals gnaw stone stack
1 gnaw stick
1 hide box
1 wheel
3 tiolet rolls
The fan is there to cool down the rats when it is too hot.
I need to put more toys into the cage for the 4 of them but it's working out where to put them hehehe.

Last time I posted in this thread it was with the birdcages; I switched to an FN in December:

This set up has:
+ The bed room level has 1 waffle house with a litterbox turned toybox filled with their felted apple & rattle balls.  Access to the "loft" (hammock) is on this level.
+ The kitchen/dining room level down has their main food bowls for mix & blocks as well as access to a tube, and some mineral chews
+ Ground floor has their litterbox, a soft pillow to relax on (read: try to stash in their food bowls  Roll Eyes ), and their baby food/veggie/fruit bowl.

Currently I have a girl in a different cage for health reasons:

In here:
+ A glittery, neon green igloo with a pad inside that doubles as a sack for her to hide in.
+ A homemade pillow (the dark spot is a drop of water from when I was moving the cage around.)
+ 1 large bowl of her favorite pieces of mix, some lab block, and a bit of nutri-cal.
+ 1 small bowl for baby food

The Gerbs: Jack Karnak O'Neill & Daniel Cairo Jackson.
The Cavies: Brownie & Pig (aka Nelson).
Sister to Blouney Cat.

Rest well, Goofy, and give Crazy a love-slap from me.
I love you, Swirley. I love you, Gaia.

Loving every day with my 7 ratlings

« Reply #280 on: July 04, 2008, 02:41:19 PM »

Newbie here, but not to ratties.  Went to Martin's yesterday to pick up my brand new R-695.  It's home to the two male PEWs an employee there had for adoption.   Grin

Currently has...

2 PVC tubes
1 large corner litter pan with bedding
2 hammocks (made another today after this photo was taken)
3 big Bird Toys
1 wire ball that I put Timothy Hay / tissue and stuff for them to pull on
1 huge house on the bottom that they will eventually grow into

Still working on...

Linoleum floors over the wire
some baby link toys
anything else I can find that they like!  Smiley

Love me, love my rats!

Alrighty.. Finally took some pictures of the boys' cage.  They got brand new "manly" hammies and I thought it was the perfect time to take some pics!  (I'd hate to embarrass them with rainbows, hearts and TONS of pink.. shh!)

I took tons of pics.  For more detailed pics, go here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/passionate_eye_dot_org/sets/72157606016020183/

Cage currently holds 18 male rats.  11 babies, 7 adults (2 neutered).  According to the cage calculator, it can hold 25-26 rats... but we never plan on having more than we do now..

Now details right?

Hubby and I built this cage using melamite board from Lowe's.  It's a little over 6ft tall, more than 6ft wide and 17" deep.  The raw edges of the melamite board and the poplar used to construct the door frames are wrapped with adhesive shelf paper to prevent urine from soaking into the wood.  The ratties are completely uninterested in the shelf paper and leave it alone.  The ramps are made out of poplar and are completely chewable.  Each "stair" is attached with a single screw and can be replaced with a new "stair" when needed.

The shelf liners are made out of acrylic felt.  The rough side of adhesive velcro is attached to all edges of the shelves.  The felt liners adhere directly to the velcro without having to use the fuzzy side of the velcro.  The problem with using velcro is that you either have to sew the fuzzy side onto your material or use the adhesive kind.. that then washes off when it goes through the laundry.  With the felt, that problem goes away!  The other thing I love about using the felt is that it requires no sewing.  (I DO NOT SEW!  Heh.)  The acrylic felt doesn't fray in the wash so the borders don't have to be bound.  You just cut it to fit and you're done!  It all makes for very easy cleaning too!

There are three tunnels made out of pvc pipe that attach the two cages so the spoiled ratties can easily go back and forth between the cages.  Each tunnel can be closed off using a screw in block, if needed.  There are also three trap doors that allow all sections (divided up by the doors) to be closed off from others if you have a sick rat, need a nursery or if you just have a rat that needs to be otherwise separated.

You may also notice that we've put bricks throughout the cage under each water bottle.  Weird right?  They have three purposes.. (1) they help to keep the ratties nails filed, (2) they catch and soak up extra water droplets from the bottles to keep the bedding clean and dry, & (3) they make cool sleeping spots for a spoiled, lazy rat on a hot day.  Grin

So what all is in this cage?   Geez.. Umm.. Well, there are different set ups for this cage, of course, but in the pictures shown there are...

Cookie  2 Wobust Wodent Wheels (Mainely Rat Rescue)
Cookie  2 lego houses
Cookie  1 plastic dome house
Cookie  1 wooden house with movable vents on both ends
Cookie  3 litter boxes
Cookie  1 ferret snuggle bed (PupAware/Ebay)
Cookie  1 bunk bed hammock (Mainely Rat Rescue)
Cookie  1 swan shaped sleep basket (Mainely Rat Rescue)
Cookie  1 rat wigwam (Mainely Rat Rescue)
Cookie  1 swinging rat roost (Mainely Rat Rescue)
Cookie  2 hanging polka dot baskets (Mainely Rat Rescue)
Cookie  1 chainlink baby toy
Cookie  2 baby rattles
Cookie  4 wooden hanging chew toys with bells
Cookie  1 ferret ark
Cookie  2 dog rope toys
Cookie  5 blue food bowls
Cookie  6 pvc pipes (baby hideouts)
Cookie  1 wooden house (Doyle's house  )
Cookie  1 froggy planter (Strange's greenhouse)
Cookie  1 rainbow "cave"
Cookie  1 edible "tree" log
Cookie  2 triangular corner cubes (Divine Designs/Ebay)
Cookie  2 pocket hammocks (Divine Designs/Ebay)
Cookie  2 cubes (Divine Designs/Ebay)
Cookie  Miscellaneous toys, balls, etc

Here's the cage my two young hairless boys are living in right now. It's actually my original cage I bought for my first 3 boys.

And here's both cages stacked on top of eachother. It's the only place I have to put the smaller cage at night. (It goes on my bed during the day.)

I rearranged my room and the guinea pig cage, and now when I'm on the computer, the little nekkies are to the left of me, and the big boys to my right.

Here's their cages, clean and with the things I ordered from Scubbs put in!

Well, I ordered some stuff from Scubbs, and today I went on a toy shopping spree and this is the final product!  I think I'm FINALLY happy with it, and so are the boys!

Whole thing

Top half

Bottom half

It's home to 2 boys.  It's a brand new Martin's 690, they have upgraded a few things.  The ramps are not as steep now, and the doors are much bigger.  I like it a lot more than the old ones.

I redid my cages yesterday. Two are SP Exotics cage and the other a Martins R695 cage. Somebody asked me what the black thing is in all the cages, its a speed basin. I bought 6 of them on sale. This is what they look like: http://www.drillspot.com/products/354370/Nds_201_Speed_Basin_Lock_Outlet

I added an extra shelf in this cage to make almost a full level, it worked out well so I will be doing it to my other exotics cage too.

The new FN I bought off craigslist last week. Working on rearranging it and adding to it. Feels a little empty. I have 2 young boys right now, waiting on 2 more from an expected litter. Figure they'll have enough room  Roll Eyes Just added the top igloo, made the hammocks with my mom. New litterbox definitely working lol.
