There are rats in my house.

WWW
« Reply #90 on: May 09, 2006, 10:22:29 AM »

I just realized I never put up  my new custom made cages by Martins.
I contacted Diane Martin to make me a cage with my specs. I wanted rattie bar spacing so I can put all ages in the cage. It's 30 x 18 x 36 high. I asked for 15" door on the bottom and top. I asked for just one full level and one balcony at the top. I also requested for a pull out tray for easy cleaning and no "junk" falls in between the bars and the tray.
It's fantastic and my rats love it. I put two of them together to make it one huge cage for my 13 rats. I have 6 spayed females, 2 neutered boys and 5 intact boys living happily together in their community cage.

I just ordered another one and should soon be here. I've recently taken in 5 rescues.  And one of these custom made cage will be just perfect.  Hyper

I finally received my other custom made cage. It's identical to my other ones except I'm keeping it as a single cage.
So it's 30 x 18 x 36 high. With it's huge doors and pull out tray, makes it's so simple to clean.
My new guys will be going into this cage.  Hyper

Here is my first cage all set up and ready to house two rats.  All I have to do is spread the shredded aspen in the aquarium level and watch the show.  The only other change I might add is take out the shack and get an igloo instead as those seem to be popular and work well with rats.  If there are any other suggestions as to some other non-loud toy that I can toss in there so they'll have maximum fun when I sleep, drop me a PM.  Smiley  Right now going from the floor up they have a tube, climbing toy, wheel, and hammock.

Or any other comments or suggestions are very much welcome.  Thanks a lot!

Martins' R-695. Currently holding one rat. Setup changes every time I change bedding, things are switched in and out constantly.

The pan holds towels (instead of bedding). The bottom level: "nesting box" (changes every week or less), hanging bird toys, a stuffed animal (not attached), a hanging (stacking) desk-shelf sort of thing with a small blanket for softness. The second level: a baby rattle toy (not attached), cat sisal "tube" hanging; very thick shelf liner on part of the floor. Third level: a terracotta pot (loosely attached to side of cage), food bowl (small cat metal bowl, we have 3 so there's always 2 being cleaned and one in the cage), a hanging baby toy, bird ladder leading to top floor (attached at bottom with a ziptie to keep it non-moving); baby blanket, washcloth and a plastic very thin cutting board stuff on parts of floor. Top level: a jean-leg hammock hung with baby rings, basket attached to side with a baby blanket inside; floor covered with a baby blanket.

There's washclothes, small blankets and fleece materials scattered about the cage for warmth. I usually also have a chin-chiller marble slab thingy in there and more of the shelf liner, but those are soaking at the moment.

Here is a picture of the Ferret Kingdom that I bought from th Dr.Fosters and Smith catalog.  It is five feet in height and 36 inches all around.  This is a pretty bare pic.  It was a few months ago and I hadn't decorated it yet.  I love this cage.  Right now it houses my two girls who are nine months old.  I just adopted two more girls so eventually (I hope) they will all be together.

The girls' cage! It's a Martin's 690. I've used vinyl tiles and towels to line their cage. Right now they've got a summer theme going. Mac isn't so sure about the bright flashy thing, and stands near her favorite tunnel.

Here is my All Living Things cage from PetSmart. Next month we are ordering a RUUD from Martins, but for now...this is the cage. Smiley We had four girls in it (one just passed away last night so now there are three) Ive got a BAD case of GGMR so thats why the RUUD next month!;) Thanks for looking!

The white tunnel is dryer tunnel. It lasted about four days and then was chewed all up! But they had a blast while it was there:)
Bottom has the litterbox, food dish, wall mirror, small igloo and a Chube (under the stairs), middle floor has an oatmeal box, a tub turned upside down to climb on, and a dearpie tube hammock! Top floor has a huge plastic cylinder that came to me filled with cookie cutters!! they LOVE this thing! Also on the top floor is the water bottle and medium sized Dearpie pocket hammock:) and a jingle ball.

Here are photos of my cage, a Martin's 695.

the entire cage:

and a view through the door of the top level:

and redecorated:

I love the cage in terms of space and make, but it isn't powder-coated, so it makes a big, smelly mess .. I definitely recommend powder-coated.

And then here is a photo of the small cage I have borrowed and used for fosters. It's just a nicely-sized cage that's good to have around when I need it. This cage is a Martin's, but I'm not quite sure which one.

Accessories change often, but there is just basic stuff in there: toys, igloos, wheel, and hammocks!

Here's my current cage, a Martin's 695 with an extra half shelf added in:

(I have fabric hung in the back to shield the wall from pee. It provides hours of chewing enjoyment.)

Here's my previous cage, which was homemade. I donated it to Rattie Ratz last year. It was built on a 2' x 3' cement mixing pan and uses wire shelving with tiles for each level.

Eli and Olive *RIP Daisy 07/2006*

« Reply #103 on: July 14, 2006, 10:13:48 PM »

I just recently re decorated mine, hehehe, my two girls Eli and Olive are having a blast exploring all the new things! I found this cage at Petco (suprisingly) it's the Small Animal Kingdom Ferret Starter Kit if anyone was wondering (MUCH too small for a ferret though) it's 22.5" L x 14.5" D x 28.5" H

It's perfect for my two girls though and i love the fact that it has solid levels and ramps. In it I have a hammock, some old shirts to make ropes/tunnels with plastic cups with the bottoms cut open for tunnels, an old flower pot as a little hiding place, an old hampster wheel for them to lay in, a cardboard box with some holes punched in it, a shark head cupholder for them to  sleep in, anyways...LOTS of fun stuff! Smiley

I have 2 R-695s connected with a PVC tube. They house 8 rats.

The first cage

Second cage

In their cage they have: 5 hammocks, 3 plastic bins, 2 igloos, a shoe box, a comfort wheel (12"), a brick, a piece of drainage tubing, a shoebox, a litterbox with cloth (before all they did was sleep in it, so I figured I might as well make them comfortable Tongue), and an extra shelf with a cloth over it which they use as a bed.

Here is a pic of my bird cage I am using for my new baby boy until he grows big enough to fit into the super pet cage I have waiting for him. I've tried to make it as homey for him as possible, but my decorating skills are lacking somewhat.

I'm so glad to *finally* have pictures to post in this thread!  Smiley  The rats' nest (minus the rats):

The top of the cage includes a flat-bac water bottle, bowl, roll-a-nest (in medium, I think), chinchiller, two "flat stack" bricks, two rotating mirror parrot toys, an elbow pvc pipe, a small timber hideaway , two natural wood perches for climbing, and of course a big ol' fleece hammock (until it wears out and I can order a few from Dearpie!).

The bottom of the cage has yet another flat-bac waterbottle, a wood/rope parrot ladder, a T-shaped pvc pipe, two rainbow cat toys, an awesome wonderrodent cube (size 6x6x6), and a rather goth-looking wodent wheel.

In case you couldn't tell, the cage is a martin's 690.  Right now the family and I have it on a neat-o parrot cage stand in our kitchen, complete with shelves for all those ratties treats.  The cage is massive, but we all love it!    If anyone has questions or comments, feel free to pm.

I purchased the R690 but modified. I asked for 12" doors so wheels can go in and out quite easily. I also asked for a pull out tray only because I hate having to lift the cage to remove the tray to clean it every week. I also asked them not to pre-assemle the levels and middle floor because I was going to change it a bit. The one direct from Martin's, I found the bottom level a bit steep. So I had some left over wire panels from my previous martins purchases and made me the perfect ramp.
Ok, here are the pics:

From far:

A closer look:

A side view:

The top level, as you can see, I load my cages with clutter, it keeps a mind busy:

The bottom level with my new sexy ramp:

And finally... throw some rats in!

They love it!! I do find this cage somewhat small for my taste. But I'm quite anal when it comes to cage size and my precious rats... but this cage will house Cado and Isabelle and one more baby will be joining this home... one of Rennie's babies direct from Balego!!
