This is the latest incarnation of the Brats' home.

Currently inside:
  • 7 Hammocks
  • 1 KitchenAid shelf with fleece liner
  • 1 Waffle House
  • 2 bins for added "levels"
  • 1 egg basket
  • 2 baby toys (1 well-loved banana man & a pooh bear toy)
  • 2 dog toys
  • Several bird  toys
  • 3 sets of baby links
  • 1 Knut Nibbler
  • 1 Litter box

I don't earn terribly much so things are added as I can afford them.  A lot of what is in there are things I thought up while standing in the aisle of dollar tree.

Welcome to the unveiling of the Mitchell Mischief FN.  Here's the FN with the doors closed.  You can see the 10oz Loc-crocks attached to the door of the upper level.  It's so nice to be able to put the tofu bowl in place without being mobbed.

On the upper level the boys have their winter pocket hammock, a placemat hammock and a hanging tube (behind the placemat hammock).  There is also a small Sterilite crate hanging on the wall and a litterbox in the opposite corner.  The boys also enjoy squeezing into the Ratatouille Kleenex box.  The shelves are covered with fleece receiving blankets from Dollar Tree.  There is another placemat hammock under the left shelf.  The floor covering is quilters flannel from Joann's.  The small water bottle on the left side will be replaced soon with a larger bottle.  That's Kisses saying "Howdy" from the placemat hammock.  There is a concrete brick blocking the entrance to the lower level.

The lower level is pretty much the same as the upper level except I don't have as many hanging things due to Egor using them to reach the closed off gateway to the upper levels so he can nip the toes of the boys above.  I don't have the Loc-crocks on the lower level because I hope to do introductions after Star is spayed and I like to have the main feeding area on the upper level.  The Sterilite crates are filled with fabric scraps.

My 2 boys cage, it's basically a conglomeration of a bunch of cages I had but was no longer using. I've attached them together with plastic tie-wraps, which works well and there is a ton of space. It's a little empty but I'm gradually adding to it.

My very first rat cage, as I am a very new owner. (Got my ratties 2 days ago.)
The calculator says this can house around 4.5 rats, so I sure hope they will be happy!

Home to my three boys, Frodo, Gandalf, and Shadowfax.

So far the cage includes: cozy hammock, hanging tunnel, igloo, chube, wooden hidey house, fiddle sticks, a litter box, 2 glass water bottles, food bowl that is attached to the side of the cage, and 2 bird toys, one hanging wooden bear with ropes, and one little ladder with a small mirror at the top.

Hehe. Here's my cage. It's a Martin's R-695 Rat Skyscraper. I have three rather smallish females in it, and I just finished decorating it with my first set of home-made liners. Yay!!

Whole cage.

Top of the cage.

Bottom of the cage.

Hammocks, water bottles, food dishes, litter box, wodent wheel, plastic-bin-turned-house, and nut nibbler thing.

mines a ferplast jenny..contains boxes,litter trays,large rock,wodent wheel,hammocks,houses,lots of shredded paper..tubes

I have the same cage Grin

Also I have the ferplast freddy

The freddy and jenny are different (with the things in them).
The freddy has a hammock, medium waffle house, litter tray, small tube, and I think that's it.
the jenny has two litter trays and a tub (as a litter tray), with wood pellets, then two hammocks, big tubes, a tunnel, and another mini tube.
Might be more but I think that's it Blue Dumbo Smile

I've made at least two other posts in this thread as my rat caging needs have changed over the years, but I thought I'd share a picture of my latest set-up for my crew.

These are the new My First Home For Exotics cages put out by Super Pet. I have the girls on the right and the boys on the left. I am very, very pleased with these cages: they are attractive, priced reasonably, and have 1/2" bar spacing that stays consistently small enough to keep even the littlest baby rats in.

I posted my cage when I first got it, but it looks quite a bit different now. I just switched over to fleece, so I figure I'll post a pic of the updated version of my ratties cage.

Although I've posted pictures of my cage many times, I haven't updated this thread.  The homemade cage that's pictured in the first page of the thread, has been sold to Blackthorn and is currently not in use.

My #1 cage is 2 two-story Ferret Nations that I (severely and permanently) modified and connected together using zipties.  It holds 9 of my 12 rats.

I did a MAJOR clean today so:

Top shelf is the play area, treat toy, carboard tube, ball, chews, perches, ropes and these 'falls' toys I make that they love to pull through the bars.

Below that is a lounge with the new litter box.

In the bottom half is a triangle hammock so they dont fall, a small ledge, a bigger wooden ledge (covered in plastic then fleece) and a double decker hammock,

on the ground is Carefresh aobut 2.5 inches deep, a tangerine box bed, food, water and a coffee pot igloo, thats new and I hope they use it.

It houses 5 males.

This is my Super Pet Multi-Level Ferret Cage.
I assembled my Super Pet Cage to house my tow rats, but as soon as all was decorated and good to go, the girls crawled right out of the bars. Did you need to make any accomaodations. Also. does the smell of urine seep into the plastic shelves and ramps permanently? Have you since found a better cage?

This is a cage that I had Martin's build for me.  I tried to get them to make me a FN.

The price was $326.
There are a few things I would do differently though:
Cookie The doors are too big and require 4 closures.  What a pain.  I'd go with 12x12 doors instead.
Cookie I would've gone with the drop-in pan instead of the pullout pan.  Try dragging that huge cage around on the carpet.   help

Otherwise, it's an AWESOME cage!

And this is the Ruud I bought secondhand.

Edited to add more information.

My two boys live in the Martin 690 and my three girls live in a Coast Cage.  They live in our loft on a hand crafted Roll Eyes table.

« Reply #229 on: January 25, 2008, 08:40:46 PM »

Here are some updated pictures of my cages. I hate 'em both, the blue one because of size and the big one because it's so darn hard to clean. But I've been banned from buying anything that isn't a necessity for my animals... Angry

This is how the set up is. Ginny and Dora have the top cage, and Luna has the bottom one.

Yellow Cute Laugh I've had the same idea Lorraine! Wasn't sure how well it'd work out though... Very cool that you did it!

Anyways, here's a few updated pics of my R-690. It's currently housing my 3 dwarf boys and it was just cleaned today, so they haven't redecorated yet.

Top level:
Jeans leg tube
Ski cap "pouch"
Igloo
Food bowl attached to cage
Water bottle

Bottom level:
Roll-A-Nest
Wodent wheel
Box

That's Eddie peeking out of the jeans leg, Dewey on the middle level and Jack on the bottom. Once I get some more money, I'm going to go buy more cubes and other toys for them. Cheesy

New setup. Top cage is a "retirement home" for my girl Riot. It has the main floor level, a waffle block house which adds a second level as well as acts like a hidey house... it also has her hammock which adds another level in a way. I set her with a couple toys and of course her food bowl and water bottle.

Below is the Martins 690. It looks really bare because I had the hammock and hanging play tunnel in the wash... but it holds two girls, Poptart and Tea. It has a few hanging play toys, some floor toys, hammock, hanging play tunnel, blanket, etc.
