Pouched Rat

« on: February 13, 2005, 10:07:59 AM »

Hey, well it's getting a bit dangerous with out of cage playtime lately for the rats.. because of how many I have and all the electric gizmos.. I used to do it in the kitchen or bathroom until Matisse during HIS out of cage time, had chewed under a cabinet... grr..  he gets supervized out of cage time now because he's always been too destructive if left on his own.

What I'm interested in is turning a fold up (card?) table into a rat play area.  I think I've seen some pictures of that before, where people have plexiglass screwed into the sides, etc.  Ihave a few rats who'll gladly jump off the table which is my main concern here..

Or would a martins rat playpen be a better way to go?  I sort of like the idea of the table because it's higher up ... giving me easier access to them.   Then maybe building out of wood a nice play area like those parrot ones..   I don't know..

They have RUUDs, would this be just a waste of time since they're already so used to having floor time out of their cages?  should I just invest in the martin playpen thingy with a top instead?   arg.. anyone have pics of their card tables turned play areas?

Rats are my obsession!

I have no picture, but my sister did that once for our rats.  Well it wasn't a fold up table, just a small dining room table.  She used tall block woods and a sheet of wood to build a second level onto it, and connected that with ropes and ladders for them to travel on.  It was really neat looking, but we never thought to put up plexi glass on the sides and almost all the rats managed to plunk themselves down from it.  I have had very few rats who are afraid of jumping down from something higher up.  And truthfully, in my opinion, I felt it would be hard to go from having rats who ran around in my bedroom before, to them being confined to a table.  For me it was too radical of a size change, so I never fixed the table problem.  But I think if you are debating between the martin playpen thing, and the table, I would go with the table.  Sorry no pictures, but I hope that helps some.

I was lucky enough to have been part of Willie's life and I am eternally grateful for the 2.5 years she gave me.
