Thank you to everyone who replied!...My partner and I were out looking to save a "feeder" from the reptile section of a pet store, when we found a quite adorable little girl that we couldn't resist...yes, we gave money to those evil people who keep four or five baby rats in a plastic cage less than 1'X1'.  I do wish I could have waited for a rescue...but when those little brown/black eyes hit you...I'm sure you all know!  She has a few problems (probably weaned too young--she likes to suckle things that might resemble nipples--but that's not too much of a problem; and her skin is flaky--just a little dandruff here and there and some itching...we're hoping it was just poor diet and once she gets some good food into her, her dry skin will go away).  Just a few weeks of isolation in the bathroom (the only room in the apartment without other rodents or within easy reach of basenji doggies!)  Lots of love and attention from the big scary humans (we're big and scary to her--she's quite little; probably only about 2-3 months old, although the woman at the pet store, when we asked how old they were said "well, they're pretty young...probably only about 6 or 7 months"...sure. 6 or 7 months my butt!  I'll post some photos soon!

congrats on the new rat.  be sure to have her checked out for lice though (suspicious about the flaky skin).
Seems like every petstore rat I have held had lice  Roll Eyes . Just a little precaution.

We're watching the flaky skin, although it seems to be getting better now that she's off those nasty alfalfa-based generic "rodent" pellets...poor baby, I think it's just dry skin, but we're keeping an eye on her (and washing thoroughly before handling our other rat).
