14 newborn ratties in SW MI!
«

I adopted two female rats from over by Detroit on May 21. I had no idea that at least one of them was pregnant! The Momma is a mink. She had babies on May 30, Memorial Day...I'll remember it all right!! They're only two days old, but there is a chance that her sister is pregnant also and could have babies by the weekend. She is either a himi or a siamese...I'm not 100% sure. I'm working on getting more pics of the babies, but right now they're just pinkies. You can email me at belle_1324 [at] yahoo [dot] com, or post here.

Thank you for the help!! I live in Covert, 6 miles south of South Haven. Here's a pic of Ashes and the babies that I took yesterday, with her sister Smudge in the background, and then some pics of the babies that I just took today. Some of them are starting to darken up! There's only three still all pink.
If you need me to, I can email them to you!

They all look like adorable babies. Do you know their genders yet? Are you going to be raising them until they are old enough and then adopt them out?

No idea on their genders yet. I looked today and still no evidence. I was told on the RMCA forums that the females should start developing nipples by the end of the first week...is there any other gender specific thing I should be watching for?
I will be raising the babies as long as I have too. I have enough 10g tanks & cages to last me for a while. The sooner I can find them homes, the better though. Since they were born May 30, I'll seperate them June 30...when they're a month old, and have them available for adoption sometime between July 4 & 10, after they get some socialization time. Any tips on the babies will be much appreciated too!

Contact Melissa at
Bad Rattitude
. She may be of assistance in sexing the pups. She's an excellent source of information and she's part of the rescue group. Cute ratties, though. A himi and a mink? Lovely kids.

I travel to South Haven, MI on a semi-regular basis, and could potentially provide some transport to the GR area.

Your babies look to be a mix of blacks and something light, PEWs, Beige, or possibly Himis. Do you have any idea who the fathers may be? Unfortunately Mink and Himi are both recessive traits, so it's more likely you'll have black and white babies, but you never know.
I can also probably help transport to the Grand Rapids area. I am currently living right off of 96 in Grand Rapids.

Smudge was pregnant as well...there are 14 babies left, I've placed 5 of them, I'll be keeping three, maybe four, for myself. As it turns out, I've got a lot of Black Veriberk Double Rexes, and a few Siamese Double Rexes as well! Here are some pics of three of the boys that I took last night:
Contestant # 1
Contestant # 2
Contestant # 3 and w/his cute lil spot by his eye
