I would say probably at least twice a day, as if you let it scab over too much, it'll just keep filling up with more pus. Just like you'll need to keep checking the ones on his side once you pull those bits out. If they heal over while they're still not clean, that could cause the recurring problem you're seeing.
Do you have a syringe you can use to flush the inside of the wounds? Doesn't need to be anything fancy, just warm water works.

Update
: I applied a warm washcloth to the behind abscess and as soon as it softened a little bit (which was pretty quickly), I squeezed it and white stuff and blood came out of it. It seemed to flatten and hollow out. What left seems to be scab/cartilage type feeling. I am not sure if I should pick it off or what? When I pressed against the abscess he squeeled a bit - and was squirmy but he was pretty tolerable. I did as much as I could and then put an antibiotic on it. (the white stuff smelled, by the way).
Should I do this multiple times a day, or once a day? I am debating just taking tweezers to the one on his side and pulling it out like I did last time, as it's a superficial type wound. Then putting some antibiotic on it..
Ok this is going to sound gross but what did it smell like? Like a cheesy bad smell or like an infection smell. If it was just smelly cheesy white stuff in the big back lump it would point to just a very big and inflamed sebaceous cyst. If you have it removed ... that is all of it ... the sack included, it will not return. However if you leave it there it may not heal or get infected or become worse.
Maybe an oral antibiotic would give him a better fighting chance. Your vet would also be able to assess wether its empty and clean and debris it.
For the one on the side, you could perhaps apply a warm wet cloth to the skin and growth to soften it and then try to gently extrude what you can.

Yes I have a few syringes from medication. I will have to wash it out and sterilize it with hot water or something first. The ones on his side are already reoccurring. This is the 3rd time they have appeared. The first time they were removed by the vet, the second time by me - and they are back. But I will definitely flush it out with some warm water.
It's times like this when I wish I was a vet myself so I could give him a good pain reliever shot, a muscle relaxant and go to work on fixing him up. *sigh*
My mother was totally grossed out at the sight of me squeezing pus out of his wound - but a momma's gotta do what a momma's gotta do.
Should I use the warm compress with his black wound too, on his cheek? or try picking at it??

I heat compressed his side - and below is an image of the stuff that has come out. For the majority - it was really easy to take out, like last time. Much like a Splinter (hence his name). However on the first wound, the outer seems more fleshy wound so I'm going to let that be for now, although I washed it with water.
The wound next to it, that looked more like a round puncture wound took a little more work, but it seemed like cartiledge taking out.. and I squeezed out, with eventual ease, this huge solid mass! I supplied the image. What does it look like? Like I said before, it became an open wound so I washed it with warm water (which he did not like) and put a topical antibiotic on it.

I also ended up dressing his wounds with nonstick sterile pads and gauze and waterproof tape:
(1) So he, or Gollum won't lick the antibiotics off.
(2) Dust, and other stuff doesn't get into it.
(3) Has time to heal.
I will have to wash it out and flush his wounds daily, but I hope that it helps him, and hopefully it will heal up nicely. As for the black thing on his cheek, that will have to wait until I have some funds to go to the vet. (I currently just applied for a job at PetsMart, so who knows? Maybe I'll have discount at the clinic there, too!)

That looks like what I get out sometimes. Pretty gross, isn't it? Just keep getting those scabs off and the hole cleaned out and it will start to close up. You should be all set for the back ones, you've got a good plan. I don't know about the face one, so I'm going to let someone else tackle it.

It was pretty gross - but I could handle it. It was having him in pain that really tore at me. I've tried giving him plenty of yogies to make up for it - but I still feel badly about it. I will probably have to go to PetsMart later and get pet friendly dressings and antibiotics for him. Anything to make him feel better.

Yeah, that solid lump is a sebaceous gland cyst. Hopefully that'll heal up right quick.
I agree that the one on his face should be seen by the vet, simply because it's too close to too much important stuff. Hopefully you'll get a job and be able to get him to a vet soon. In the meantime, it probably wouldn't hurt to do the hot compresses on it, just don't pick at it.

I already tried picking at it and it's like a solid rock - so I'm not even going to go further with that. He's a little irritated with me but hopefully he knows it's for the better.

You know what, this cartilage-like growth reminds me of cutaneous horn

I don't know if it can happen in rats but the color, structure seems similar.

That's almost EXACTLY what it was like.. just kind of grows out like that! When it FIRST happened, I thought he got stabbed with something.. bedding or whatever.. but it just keeps on coming back. I've flushed out the wound and tried to get as much as that tissue as I could but I don't want to put him through SO much trauma in on eday.

Good for you!
Keep it up whenever you see the abscesses forming. The white stuff is probably coagulated white cells fighting the infection or pus. The hard part around the hole could be dead tissue or scabbing or the edges of the abscess sac. Most likely necrotic tissue. My thoughts are that if it could be done, the sacs these abscesses form in should be removed.
I would think he should be on antibiotics again to treat the infection, but your work on getting the pus out is marvelous! If they are both abscesses, treat the other one, too.
Take pics after you do a procedure so we can see what's going on. That will help folks to give you an idea of what they think is happening and what a good next step might be.

A lot of what is left, I believe is just dead tissue - although I will be continuing to heat, squeeze and pus - antibiotic, and dress until it looks better. I will show some pictures of what I have done so far, tomorrow.

SPLINTER: His HORRIBLE Cornified Cyst Fell Off Today!! *Graphic Pictures*
«
Reply #47 on:
June 13, 2005, 06:49:22 AM »
After discussing Splinter with Bella (you may know her from her Rattery and TheRatGuide) - and she saw the pictures, she was concerned and asked that I brought him in to her Rat doctor. (Luckily it's very close to where I live!) She is willing to meet me there too because she wants to find out what it is, too!
Also, I noticed the day before yesterday when I took his bandage off, that he developed a slight red mark on his sides from where teh bandage rubbed on his skin. So I kept the bandage off. When I came home yesterday, it had developed into a deep red gash across his belly.. He is in physical pain. When I hold him to put ointment on the red gash, he goes crazy. I am in tears, it looks like I've abused him. I just want what is best for him - so at 8am, I am calling to make an appointment with Bella's doctor and hopefully get him in to see him/her today.
What Splinter's fate may be, I don't know. But please send him warm wishes of recovery. For those that don't know his story - Splinter is a mock hairless that has had absesses constantly for about a year. There is one, which is open, on his butt - but not fully flushed, as there is a lot of dead tissue - which won't heal up. There is also a mysterious black lump on his cheek - which is hard as a rock - you can scrap it and have nothing come from it. It bleeds occasionally from where it comes from the skin.
Anyway - I will post updates later. :

I just came back from seeing the vet. He believes the wierd black mass on his cheek is a cyst that erupted and then cornified. The abscess is being treated with antibiotics (.3ccs of Baytril) and his infection from the pet wrap (Vet believes he had an allergic reaction to the wrap) is being treated with anbiotic/anti-inflamitory topical creme called Animax, or something like that. It is also going being applied to his abscess and cyst. Then, I am to call him by the end of the week to let him know how things are progressing.
Bella was sweet enough to meet me there for support (and inquiry). She took some pictures, which I imagine will be going onto ratguide.com (reasons NOT to use petwrap on your pets!!) Anyway - he's a trooper and everything thinks he will be just fine!
