~ rats are magic ~

« on: June 02, 2005, 09:31:28 PM »

I bought a grrreat wall so I could use it as a place for my babies to play and for cage cleaning times.  BUT... they all can jump right out, even my girls.  Shocked   For those of you that have one, how does it work for you?  Do yours jump out too?  Is there something I need to do to make it more rat proof?  Geeeez, I was so excited when it arrived and was so let down when it took literally less than a minute for them all to disciver there was "life outside" the wall.   OR... are my rats just smarty pants rats!

Thanks,
Nancy

In short, you can't make it more rat proof.   Tongue

Some rats are content to stay inside the play area (my original 8 didn't even chew through a cardboard barrier I had for them when they free ranged in the rat room)

.........and some just want to explore (like my three current darlings.  I swear they are spring loaded sometimes).

I haven't been able to stop my kids jumping out, so now I lock 'em in the kitchen with the door shut.

Haha, I'm no help.  Good luck though!  Yellow Cute Laugh

Yeah, Timothy climbed up my arm and took a flying leap over the grrreat wall and scared me to death!  Now I just stay in there with them and put in a few boxes and newspaper and treats and keep a close eye on them.  I try to put lots of toys for them to explore so they stay intrested and won't try to jump the wall.

I don't have girls, just boys, but even my boys jump up on the edge, to the high wire trick, and then go spelunking in the blankets on the papasan. There's no stopping them, so I just gave up.

Girls, however, are even MORE active, and DO tend to jump right over it. This is very common from things I have read here. If you can distract them by sitting in there with them and engaging them in play it -might- help (my guys jump up -slightly- less often when I am in there with them), but that's all I can really offer.  Undecided

I read that there is some sort of Grrreat Wall Topper that you can buy and attach to the top- it's rounded at the top and adds height to the wall making it very difficult for them to get out... I haven't used this, but it sounds like it would help...

what  about the play pens martins sells they look realy neat when i get ratties i will invest in one or two of them

here are the sizes and prices

The Rat Playpen (RPP-24 or RPP-44)
Our Rat Playpen has had rave reviews! A favorite of rat owners and ratties themselves, the Playpen provides an amazing 44" x 24" x 24" or 44" x 44" x 24" of safe, confined space for your pet to run and play. The flip-top lid closes securely to thwart escape artists. The mesh we use on our Rat playpens is ½" x 1" black powder-coated mesh. The Playpen collapses flat for easy transporting and storage. Best if used on a solid, flat surface. Simply add your favorite toys and watch your ratties have fun. The Playpen should be used under supervision.

Small Playpen measures 44" x 24" x 24"
Large Playpen measures 44" x 44" x 24"
Flip-top lid
Collapsible for easy transport and storage

  Small Rat Playpen - $45.00

  Large Rat Playpen - $55.00
