Is this normal? when I bring stuff into my girls cage they shred away and put it in their hat/hammock. He just sits in his box that he had at the humane society, and tramples the tissues and tp and newspaper I put in there for him.

I'm beginning to wonder if he's a bachelor who needs a ladies touch. He reminds me of a guy with milk crates and a recliner  Wink

Completely normal... I've had a few male nesters, but most of them didn't care.

Is this your first male?

He's my first boy! I have had Nine (!) girls.  A few of them have been older when I got them.

I just want him to be comfy. He's in a tank until the neuter "takes", but we will get a new bigger powder coated cage for all three of my rats. I hope they get along! When that happens I'll get a hammock.

It makes me laugh that It's a guy thing. Makes sense though.

Something that my boys like to do (a little hard since he's in the aquarium for now) is when I take a piece of paper towel, roll the end, then put it *just* through the bars of the cage.  It makes them crazy, and they spend time hauling it into the cage, then hauling it up to their hammocks and peeing on it.

isn't it amazing at how like humans rats are...

my mom is a cleaning freak, my dad loves to "keep her happy" by making messes (his thinking). my girls have been major nesters. usually one will be the one in charge of directing the construction. the boys i have known (since i have never been owned by any) have been complete hammock potatos.

I haven't had any males yet, but soon, so I can't say whether it's a male thing but my oldest girl doesn't nest either. She's lazy and wants me to do it for her.

My 3 girls that are living together right now nest in 3 places in their side of the cage, ( top ledge under their hammock, in their "cuddle box" and on the bottom level in the nesting box) ... My 3 big boys on the other hand have more levels and 2 sleeping spaces but they all sleep in their cuddle box .... lazies..... ( PS I call their cuddle box's... um I think thats the right words for it , its a box with old socks, cut up tees and pieces of cloth for them to cuddle in  Roll Eyes told you I was dumb
