I have done the whole "spray the cage with water, squirt vinegar, squirt peroxide" on it routine and personally, I don't really think that it does all that much.  My cage can last about two weeks before I think that it starts to smell and needs to be washed again during the summer - and two weeks was the time frame when I used the vinegar and peroxide.  So now all I do is take the cage outside and spray it with the hose; for me that usually does the trick.  If the rats had a particularly dirty week, then I use some dish soap to wash it as well.

i wash first with the peroxide than with the vinegar. I usually rinse after that because it seems like the vinegar makes things sticky

I use both. Be sure to keep them in separate spray bottles. I first spray the peroxide (I like to see it bubble  Cheeky) then spray vinegar over it. Let sit a few minutes and either wipe down or wash off.

Here's an article on how great vinegar is The Virtues of Vinegar. When you add the hydrogen peroxide it makes it 10 times more effective than vinegar alone.
