Rollie loves her rat ball. It's hung on the side of her cage with both ends removed (the 'doors') and she likes to sit in it with her treats. I'm sure there are loads of variations on that theme.

They also love their hammocks, if you don't already have them. I always presumed they were over rated until Squeaky made me some. They're loved by all and used every single day (thanks Squeaky  Grin).

They have tiny soft toys, usually from charity shops. Some like them more than others but they get beaten up and dragged around the cage.

Plastic piping for plumbing can be placed around the cage or, even cheaper, call into a carpet shop and ask for one of the inner tubes. You'll get a huge one for nothing and then you just need to cut it up.

I don't really buy many toys for my rats as they like the simpler things in life ie the home made ones. I just tend to see what's lying around and think of something to do with it as the purchased toys are never too popular. I know, I sound really tight  Wink

hammocks (you can cut up scrap fleece into squares and hang it in there with paper clips or safety pins), hanging wooden bird toys (they actually sell these at the dollar store sometimes.. my rats LOVE ones with bells, and make sometimes way too much noise),  cardboard boxes, those PVC pipes from Home Depot, etc..

actually, raid the dollar store.  you'll be surprised by what you find there.   they have small plastic bins made for office supplies you can use or hang up in the cages with zip ties, the plush toys I use often for snuggle buddies (I also like hanging them up in the cages and the rats destroy them), and then there's always their pet section with wooden bird toys, dog toys (I avoid rubber ones), kitty plastic jingle balls (trust me they love these), and sometimes even crappy hamster toys that serve almost no purpose for me.....

I went to the baby section at wal-mart and got some small plastic baby toys and hung themin the cage...I dont know if they're playing with them though,...I just saw autumn run through the teething ring(all plastic, no liquid)! They do play with the little jingly cat balls too, those are especially nice because even the bells are made of plastic. All of these cost about $1-2 each.

A box of kleenex.....they love to pull the tissues out and make nests. The empty box is fun for them to hide in as well.... Hyper

I made my rats some pocket hammocks and they love them i used fleece. Yeah tissue boxes is basically what my cage is filled with. No matter how many boxes are in the cage the rats still fight over em.  Roll Eyes but we take most of the tissue out and put newspaper in the box, (We the humans use the tissue lol)

I get old fabric and cut it into strips. I take it and tie up treats. (almonds in the shell, dry pasta, dried craberries, etc.) I then tie all the strips together in a wad. My rats love to chew them up. Mine also love wooden bird ladders, hammocks, boxes, tissue boxes ar the favorite, and ferret tubes.

i just went to the dollar store and bought some of those stackable bins, the little ones, so they can climb and hide out, as well as a couple small baskets that i can ziptie to the side of their cage. I put fabric scraps and some of the shredded gift paper(i bought the brown paper kind, no dye) and i put shreds of that into their baskets. Also, a couple old gift bags, with tissues or shredded paper are fun for them to hide in, or hide stuff in, and they can move the little shreds to build their nests etc. The shredded paper looks just like the Eco-bedding that you can see in the photos in the Eco-bedding thread, and you can get it in small bags for a buck a bag at our dollar store.
