Guinness

« on: August 02, 2005, 12:43:34 AM »

I am wondering how long before a rat becomes full grown, or grown to the point that he is grown, but not yet filled out.

My baby Guinness was born on June 13, making him 7 weeks old. He is already quite large, and doubles in size every week, and seriously looks bigger everyday. His head is already filling out, his tail his big and thick, his adult hair is grown in.

he is quite a hefty boy, and well on his way to being a big squish, i am trying to gain an idea of how big he is going to get. I didn;t think he would be so big so quickly, but i am new at this, so i don't really know whats normal

any input is appreciated- Thanks Smiley

Wow, he must be getting big!!  I have two girls, about the same age, and they are slowly getting bigger.  I can't wait till they get big, lol.  It's my first time owning rats though, so I can't really help you, just wanted to share, lol.  Smiley

At 7 weeks, they're usually pretty teeny still... he's got some more growin' to do! Grin

My guys are 8 months old, and fairly full grown... they weigh between 500 and 600 grams right now. If you can get a scale, you can weigh them and see how they compare. Wink

I know how you feel. I had baby girls last time and now I've got boys and they grow much, much more than the little ladies. I got them at five weeks and they're nine now and are noticably larger every day. Last time they were weighed (last Wednesday) they were almost 300 grams already, and they're still babies. I'm sure they weigh more already. One of them already has a little squish even though their staple diet is Harlan Teklad blocks with a few healthy treats. They're about the size of my smallest adult girl now, and they're nowhere near done Smiley I'm excited to see how large they get although I'm watching the fat carefully. My boyfriend thinks chubby animals are cute but agrees that healthy animals are the most important. In any case, we're enjoying observing the growing process and excited to have some big boys on our hands soon.

oh wow...now i am getting nervous.... Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

he is definitley not teeny...not at all... i know he comes from big lines, but in another week or two, i think he will be the size of his mom...and she was a good size lady.

I might have ratzilla on my hands   Blue Dumbo Smile so much for my parents wanting a smaller rat

and he already has a bit of a belly....maybe i should switch to lab blocks...he loves to eat..and eat..and eat...

I will definitley weigh him tonight....ahhh...i hope is not bigger than my dog ...hehe  Blue Dumbo Smile

My girls don't seem to eat much.  But they are eating, so that's all I worry about.  They prefer treats, but I only give them treats maybe once a day, sometimes twice.  So I know they are not getting stuffed on treats, lol.  Between the two of them, they only seem to go through about a half a lab block a day, granted the lab blocks are about an inch in length.

He eats 1/4 cup of subees mix a day, sometimes leaving a bit over in his tube, but finishing it at somepoint later in the day. I think lab blocks may be a better choice as he is quite the ravenous and speedy eater.

I weighed him...i did the best i could considering he wouldn't sit all the way on the scale...but he was about 125-150grams i think

is that big? its just weird cause he doesn't even look like a baby anymore...

i just hope my guinness dosen't set the guinness record for the worlds biggest rat!-well at least there will be lots to love Smiley

Look around for some lab blocks if you can.  They're formulated to be fed free choice without making rats fat.  If your boy is just big, then he'll get all the food he needs to grow, and if he's getting a little chunky, lab blocks should trim down his weight without you worrying that he's not getting enough of the nutrients he needs to grow.  My boys are related and one is significantly bigger than the other, and neither are fat or skinny.  You just might have a big squishy rat!  Kiss his big belly for us!

You can do a combo!
That's what I do.
80% of their diet is harlen teklad lab blocks.
20% is whatever else I feed them, sometimes it's Suebee's Mix, sometimes it's whatever I feel like tossing in their bowl. LOL!

ok to give you some idea about weight, my smallest girl is 245 grams which is about a single hadfull. my biggest girl was 564 grams which is between two handfuls and an armful. there are rats the reach the two armful size at well over 1000 grams but you are a ways away from that.

it sounds like your parents wanted a mouse sized rat. assure them that size doesn't matter. they let you get the right pet. after all, if you were twice your size, would they love you less or differently? i don't think so.

and for comparison, most rats grow to be between the size of a 12 oz can and a 16-20 oz bottle of soda (soda with a tail).

Meh, I've got a 5 month old male with the slim line body of a female (trust me, he's male there's no missing THAT!)
My past 2 males at 6 months were certainly big squishes. Not sure what gives. Perhaps a more active life style at a younger age then what the last two did... If anything a male that's healthy but not on the fat side would be a good thing to me!

thanks for the help and tha analogies  Blue Dumbo Smile i think he is already a soda can with a tail...we are well on our way to becoming a bottle

I got a hold of lab blocks today finally, so hopefully it will keep his belly from getting to big, as genetics is going to make him big enough!

8 weeks old and he weighs 265grams...the lady i got the lab blocks from, and who clipped his nails today (yay for no more scratches) thought he could be up to 2-21/2 pounds by the size of his feet and "big bones"-only time will tell, more to squish and kiss Smiley

Do you know anything about his lineage?  Maybe you've stumbled into Zucker territory: they are a lab strain bred to be obese.

I got him from a breeder, who believes in good size rats- granted i wasn't quite aware of how big, but i saw his mom when i picked him up, and she was a good size, but healthy not fat, just big; thick and solid.

I did not meet his dad, but i was told he was a good size. I somehow just didn't realize he would get big so quickly. I am hoping he is just an early bloomer and will slow down a bit sooner.

He is well proportioned, with big feet-which i guess he will grow into, he has a nice thick tail, big dumbo ears...he is just, big-i guess

I was spoiled with my last rat too, he was probably this size full grown (i got him at 6 months), maybe a bit bigger, so it was a bit of a shock when this one shot up like this.

He is from a line of specifically bred rats, so no obese lab rat in his line unless its way back...

i have never heard of such a thing...how sad Sad poor giant lab rats

we have members on this board who have and had rats the size of small cats. we are talking 2 pounders and bigger. all solidly built, too.

a certain Ace was one of those kinds of rats. he measured about 11 inches from nose to butt, 23 1/2 inches with tail.
