We have a couple PetsMarts around here, both I've been in have been very clean, friendly, and careful with their animals, etc.  I've never even seen a Petco.. but I saw a Petco sign along the highway on my way to Chicago once.  x.x

I know some on this board has heard me say this before (I'm a very old timer at this forum, all the way back at 54, LOL) Petco is a horrible company!! I used to manage a grooming salon in the one in Hermitage TN -----they're animal treatment is horrendous, that's why I quit. Petsmart on the other hand it great! We sell NO feeder animals, and all small animals are female only so there is no chance of unwanted breeding or mistakes.

Wanted to ad a hello to all you Floridians!! I was born and raised in Daytona Beach....

Actually, I think ferrets have been legalized in every state with the exception of California now. I seem to remember reading that in a Critter's USA magazine. Anyone else know for sure?

I'm inclined to agree that if you support even the good Petsmarts/Petcos, you are supporting the chain, meaning you're also supporting the bad ones... I never thought of it that way before! I shop at my Petsmart fairly regularly, and it's pretty good (could be a good bit better though). I've shopped at Petco before (which is very clean, and the sales people very friendly, but still an uneducated store). I wish I had another option in places to shop, but all of the locally owned small pet shops are much worse! They treat their animals terribly, and know nothing about them! So it's almost the lesser of two evils for me! Fortunately bedding is about the only thing I have to buy at Petsmart usually. And I've written to Petsmart about my cocnerns over the things they're doing wrong too...

Thus why I shop at no stores that carry  live animals.
If you can't be sure that your money is supporting a chain that mistreats it's animals, why shop there at all?
There are plenty of alternatives.

Re ferrets: STATEs yes; I had my first ferret in NY state; but NYC has its own rules.  But now there's a nice new mayor so we have hope!  There were some amazing broadcasts about this available on the internet, where the mayor insulted a ferret owner on a talk show but cops let people walk their ferrets in the park...  Not a big crackdown area as in CA.  Anyhow, there are usually cavies in the ferret tubs at NY petcos.

Yep no ferrets in NYC. I can still have one cuz I live right outside the city, in Long Island Smiley I've seen plenty of people in NYC walking around with ferrets in their bag, so it must not be so bad.
