There are three ways to get into the chat room:

1. Go to http://www.goosemoose.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,118/forum,rat/action,chat , and enter via the applet on the page.

2. Go to http://www.everywherechat.com and enter via the host's site. The room name is #rfc -- since the room is set to secret to keep out trolls, you will not find it listed. Trolls are NOT welcome, and are dealt with harshly.

3. Use a chat client, such as mirc, ircle, or Trillian.
Server: irc.everywherechat.com
Room: #rfc

Mirc (Windows): http://www.mirc.com/
ircle (Mac): http://www.ircle.com/
Trillian (Windows): http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/trillian/index.html

Feel free to reply to this thread to add any tips you've learned.

Just thought I'd let you know...  The room IS listed on the EverywhereChat site.  Just go to Hobbies, then it's the last one on the list...

Heh... ok, then it is. But it doesn't show up on the front page of the site, and that keeps the curious, troublemaking trolls out. Wink

They have to actively search for it to find it, and then actually know what the room is about. I don't even want to know what trolls think "rfc" might stand for...

« Reply #9 on: August 18, 2003, 07:04:16 PM »

I just signed up here (this is actually my first post) and I've been trying to get into the chat for days.  Every time I try to join, it kicks me out and says I have been banned -- but I've never actually been in the room!

Any help would be appreciated muchly.   Blue Dumbo Smile

Who is your ISP?  You may be inadvertantly included in one of the global bans...

My ISP is BellSouth.  Eep, I didn't even think of possibly a global ban.  That happened to me once in a different chat.

If someone else on your ISP has caused us trouble in the past, that could very well be the case. I'll look into it.

I just got back after four days in a row of work, and haven't been around, but sometime within the next few days, I will see if I can fix it.

Unfortunately, Bell South DOES sound familiar...

Umm, I'm not a troll, but I don't know what rfc is either! I guess you could say I'm a user, not a programmer? I actually get lost sometimes in technical conversations. I have wondered what it means cuz when I'm in chat, I'll see a person with that designation behind their nickname.

rfc = rat fan club  Smiley  It just means that someone logged in from the chat link on the board.  Smiley

Even though we're not affilliated with the Rat Fan Club anymore, we're kinda stuck with the "rfc" thing for the board, but yes, all it means when someone has _rfc after their nickname is that they came into the chat room via the chat link on the forum, instead of through a separate chat program (such as mirc, Trillian or ircle).

I went through the applet on this websites' chat- didn't work. I finally went to everywherechat.com, signed up, went to groups, clicked on hobbies, clicked on rfc, clicked chat now- loaded, went to a new page (the actual chat) loaded a new page with a big red X. UGH! I'm getting frustrated!

You need to download java at http://www.java.com , Microsoft stopped development on their version which is what most windows machines are running. Once you download and install java (link's on the main page) , reboot and you should be set.

I know. I HAVE Java. I was able to get into the chat last night and clicking "Chat Now" and typing in RFC. I can't do it again for some reason. I click "chat now" enter my info, press connect, and nothing happens!

There are two versions of java, if you have the wrong one it won't work. That being said, if it worked yesterday and not today it's because java broke. The microsoft java was not very good and even the sun version has that problem from time to time. Just install the new version and you should be okay.

Hi Aileen  Blue Dumbo Smile

You need to download the new version of Java, go to http://www.java.com and the link is on that page. The original microsoft java that is installed on your machine isn't supported by microsoft anymore so it's become outdated. Once you install the new version of java make sure to reboot, then try again! Let me know how it goes.
