Well, my little Ty man seems to be worse. He is pooping (very very soft stinky stuff), and he is doing it in his sleep spots, which he never did before. I am worried that perhaps he has lost control of his bowels? He is eating and drinking fine. He doesn't seem to be acting any differently. But his bum is always yucky (and he hates when I clean it) and he smells like uhhh, crap.
He has (ever since I got him) had a sensitive tummy, and had diarrhea or soft poop everytime I gave him anything to eat other then lab blocks or Suebees.  Unfortunately it appears to be worse in the last few days. I don't know what to do to help him.
He is not, nor has been on any medications at all (which I know can cause this).  He is drinking so I am not too worried about him becoming dehydrated.  But I find I am starting to take him out for cuddles less and less because it gets all over me, and on my bed, the couch, etc.  I really feel horrible about that too...
Any advice?

UPDATE
Got Ty to the vet this evening.  He had very atypical megacolon.  Vet said he had it when I got him in Oct and was amazed I kept him alive, and in good condition this long.  She was very very compasionate, and we put him to sleep.  It was the right decision for him in his advanced condition.  Ty was 7 months old.  He was the sweetest boy.  I loved him very much.  Goodnight my baby.

Hi there, not sure what might give him diarrhea, when my guy was on meds he had it and the vet recommended plain rice, no ruffage (veggies) for a couple of days, it worked wonders.  Do the pinch test on your baby often to make sure he isn't dehydrated.  Gently grab his skin between his shoulder blades, between your 2 fingers like your gonna pinch him, let go, and if it springs back into place, he's not dehydrated.  This might be gross, but you might want to scoop up some of his most recent poops, to take to the vet and have it checked for bacteria/parasites.
I would try the rice and see if that helps.  Good luck.

I would suggest (going to vet of course), but also giving him some probiotics--such as yogurt with ACTIVE cultures.

Give us some examples of what you would give him other than the lab blocks or suebee mix. If he does fine on the blocks and mix I would just feed him that. The blocks are 'nutritionally balanced' for rats so it has all that they need, and the suebee mix is basically a treat for them in itself Smiley

Plain white rice, plain pasta noodles, bread...fine
carrots, potato, chicken, cucumber, tomatoes, any little piece of meat, any pasta with any sauce (much loved by my rats), yogurt, baby food, apple, pear, broccoli=soft poop or worse
None of these things give Zipper any problems... his poop is always the same... well formed, like little raisins.
When Ty does (and it's been a long long time) have a normal poop, they are long and misformed.
He has no other symptoms (bloated or anything)
But i think he *may* be lower in energy in the past little while.
He's about 7 months old.

I think syringing liquid is about all you can do at this point, maybe get some pedialyte from a drugstore.  Please get him to a vet ASAP or he may die.  A vet will be able to give sub Q injections and maybe figure out whats wrong.  (I know I am stating the obvious--but still)

I agree get him to a vet ASAP. Also get him pedialyte or gatorade. Gatorade may taste better as pedialyte is nasty and may be harder to get him to take. They both have the electrolyte he needs. Good luck.

The apple Pedialyte is good.. I've tried it and my rats like it. Definately get him to the vets for subQ fluids though. When mine get soft poo I always have BeneBac on hand. It's just the probiotics. I'm often leary of giving yogurt because dairy can sometimes make things worse. I do give soy yogurt though. If I were you I would stick with the Suebee's and lab blocks and the treats you know he can have. It's not good for his system to be upset so much for the sake of a taste of tomato.

I worried about late onset megacolon, except he doesn't bloat...
I got some pediolyte (fruit flavour) and have been syringing that.  He stays okay for a bit, then goes to dehydrated again (pinch test) every half hour.  He is eating a bit... baby food and rice.  I got some probiotic yogurt that I will try in a bit.
My poor Ty....
I hope he makes it until tomorrow when I could get him to a vet.
keep your fingers crossed, and keep any advice coming,  I keep checking here every little bit.
(he is still grooming, but he can't seem to hold his eyes all the way open, as though really really tiered

Is addicted to rats!!!

« Reply #10 on: February 19, 2006, 07:52:02 PM »

You can also tell if a rat is dehydrated by the color of thier pee.(same with humans) My old girlie, Ema, died of *I think* old age. Her body just quit on her, and for the last two weeks of her life she was very skinny, wouldnt eat much(I fed her baby food ever night so she would have something in her stomach)  and she had very dark pee, wich means she wasnt getting enough water. I tried giving her pedialyte, but she wouldnt take it. My younger rat, b asil, is very new and has a teeny bit of watery poo... maybe shes getting used to the Suebee mix. I added a little pedialyte to thier water, I wonder if thats giving her the runnies...my rats actually like the normal pedialyte, I tasted it myself, and its pretty salty, but they like it. (I know Im wierd. Tongue)

Do you mean Ty is dizzy? About how much liquid are you giving him? Is he peeing at all?  If he's taking more than 0.5 cc every half hour or so, he may have a problem other than dehydration. If he is not peeing but is taking in fluids, he is having serious problems absorbing the liquids into his system.

When you say you are syringing liquids into him, is he taking all of what you syringe, or is most of it dribbling out of his mouth? If you're having trouble getting pedialyte or Gatorade (or another sports drink) try flat ginger ale (a doctor told me it's *almost* as good as a sports drink, and is certainly better than water), or fruit juice with a pinch of salt in it-about one very small pinch for six ounces of fruit juice.

We had a boy with *very* bad diarrhea. The vet took a sample of "poo" and discovered a large amount of bacteria in his stool--bacteria that was not good. He was on a mix of three different antibiotics and soy yogurt for about 17 days, twice a day. It took awhile, but everything tightened up just fine. He was also eating his normal diet, which was lab blocks and Oxbow Regal Rat.

If he is really dehydrated, he definitly needs a subcutaneous (sub-Q) fluid injection.

Ty made it throught the night.  He seems better today.
Publius:  He is peeing, it's not too much a fight to get it in, and he drinks it (although some dribbles out)  I have to syring it in, I hold him up right, slip the syring behind his teeth, into his cheek, and squirt very slowly.  Seems to work.
He doesn't dislike the pedoilyte, he does drink it.
By dozy I was trying to spell; short for dozing... very sleepy

It's just so hard.  He had lost almost 40 grams (when she weighed him).  She had (the Vet, Dr Munn) never seen a case of melacolon like his.  She said it was very atypical.  She said I did all the right things (thanks to all your tips and help) but that it would be a loosing uphill battle to treat him.  Damn PJ's the pet store where I got him.  I stayed with him for the euthanasia.  I held him for the sedation, and pat him as she gave him the final needle.  He will be buried in my back yard once the ground is thawed.  My heart is broken.  Thankfully I but him back in the big cage for a few hours this afternoon, so Zipper got to say his goodbyes.  I think Zipper knew Ty was unwell.  I just can't believe he is gone.  My sweet sweet little soul.

My new little guy is a 2 month old high white.  He had a loose poop today and I almost had a heart attack.  At 2 months he is passed the major danger point for megacolon right?  What are the chances that out of 3 rats i get two with it???
