My little granddaughter Sandy loves to run on her wheel during the night. Unfortunately, it squeaks...loudly.

Is it OK to put a couple drops of veggie oil on it or perhaps a spritz of cooking spray?

I too have the squeeky wheels going on here.  Tongue

I have found the best thing to do is to use a tiny bit of olive oil on the wheel, and that will usually take care of any squeakiness. Plus, the rats love the taste of olive oil, and it is actually good for them.  Wink

exactly what she said

i have found that wire wheels are notorious for continuously needing oiling, though. my wodent wheel is amazingly quiet and safer to boot. you can order them online or find them in random petstores. sometimes the rat will avoid a new wheel for a week or two but the ones who have a 'need' to run finally get over thier dislike of what is new and now i can't get them out of it. every once in a while i need to oil it but nowhere near as often as i had to oil my wire wheel. definitely worth the investment.

if you are wondering about which size to get, the senior wodent wheel is fine for small girls, but the wobust wheel is good for just about any size rat.

Olive Oil is to the squeaky rattie/hammy/gerbil world as Duct Tape and Aluminum Foil is to the Trailer Park World

If you're going to get a Wodent Wheel, I'd go with Wobust for any sized rat. I've found that even smaller girls get going so fast that a senior sized wheel seems to put a curve in their back.

Yep.  I'd go with the Wobust Wodent Wheel, too.  If you've got small girlie ratties, you just might get lucky and see them both in there, at the same time, either going in tandem in the same direction, or take turns running in the opposite direction (of each other) and sending one or the other on a "ride" around the wheel.  Rather like a Rattie Fair Ride (a la "Zipper", or "Mamba", or "Wildcat" ride where the ride-goers go upside down during loops!).  Now, THAT'S fun to watch!  And the two girls are doing this on purpose, and TAKING TURNS at it, to boot!

Rats are simply amazing....   Blue Dumbo Smile

I've applied canola cooking oil to the squeaky wheel several times...which will require another application, and another, etc. I then got the idea of covering the small supporting bar (on which the wheel attaches to) with a drinking straw. It becomes a sort of gasket between the two metals which eliminate the squeak entirely....and there's no reapplications necessary....not for a long, long, long while, anyway.
You may have to file down the hole (where the support bar goes into) with a jewelers file to increase the diameter of the hole just large enough to accommodate the newly covered bar..but that only requires a few strokes of the file on each side, and viola! No more squeak! Works for me, anyway!
Good luck.
