Furley's litter is dwindling. They look healthy but I have lost 3 more in less than 8 hours (she is eating the bodies but I don't see her do it)
I don't know if they are dying and she is eating them or if she's just eating them. She does panic when I try to count or check the babies, which I only try to do 2 times a day. She will pick up a baby and run all over the cage with it. I don't know if I should try to let Isabel nurse them or if I should let nature take it's course and leave the babies with Furley. I don't now what to do.

Sounds like she is very insecure. I would leave the nest alone and leave them be in peace. How old are her pups? She may be feeling that the babies are not safe when disturbed so she is getting rid of them.

They are 2 days old. I was checking them because the woman that I got her from said she didn't lactate. Furley had a litter 2 days before I got her and was pregnant with this litter - which I didn't know she was preg. again. That litter died because the woman took them from Furley. She has been lactating for this litter but I wanted to make sure the pups were ok and feeding. I will cover her cage and leave her be. Thanks, Melina

Melina, I am not sure you are aware of this but Furley is a hairless. RAR has Isabel (furred) who recently had a litter there. Is it possible the babies are dying because Furley is not producing enough milk? Should the remaining babies be put with Isabel?

No, they have great milk bellies. They are nice and full. I would say about the size of a pea, give or take.

If they have milk bellies and Furley has porphyrn, she may be stressed out. It does sound like she needs to be left alone and let nature do its thing. run_amok, I have my fingers crossed for the rest of the litter. She is technically a first-time nervous mom because her litters were always taken away from her, and maybe thats what is worrying her. Good luck!

That's kinda what I was thinking. She's covered up and I am listening to the peeps. It's like sittin out in the summer listening to the crickets. I hope she's not doing anything to them.

Rats make wonderful mothers, maybe she just needs less interference than most. How many eepers were there originally and how many are left?

11 born and 6 now (I think) I didn't poke around too much when I saw that there were more missing. I had 10 this morning when I before I left for work. This is kind of a shock to me.

Oh honey I am so sorry I am not sure what I would do in your situation either. Who knows if she is killing them because they are sick or because she is stressed. It would make me wonder if I should switch mommies too. *Hugs* Crosses fingers you don't lose anyore*

WOW I didn't know you lost that many! Ok now I am no expert but if it were ME and I lost one more from now on I personally would see if Isabel will nurse or try it on my own. Just my opinion

Poor furley. Yeah, id leave her alone, just make sure she has the essentials. She doesnt know that your not going to give the babies back when you take them. Try putting a spare bottle of ensure in there (a tiny bit along with her water bottle). Maybe she'll drink some and calm down. Rats grabbing and running is normal. She might also feel unsafe where she is, since she's grabbing her babies and running with them, trying to find a safer spot. Keep her someplace quiet (I know you are), make sure she has the essentials, and try to introduce yourself as a non-threatening force in a few more days.
*Hamsters are HORRID about this kinda thing, the ones I had did the same thing, unfortunately the little girl was VERY young and was pregnant when I got her. She gave me pretty babies, but only after she ate 5.
Edited: Try introducing them to your other mother to take care of. Since there are so many gone, I wouldnt risk anymore and make furley any more crazy

I thought about that, but I was afraid they would get smothered under Isabel's pups. Furley's pups are so tiny, about the size of a small tootsie roll. Isabel's pups are huge.

hmmmm... I dunno I guess wait and see if she does more? Then do what you have to. The pups can't hurt them too bad, I mean have you seen the way the mothers step all over them ? lol Or maybe trying seperating the feedings ? and also supplement on your own? I don't know I feel so bad. I know that you work all day so feeding them yourself wouldn't work out well. I wish I was there to help.

What you would do in that case is take most of Isabel's pups out, but leave enough in that convinces her to nurse still. Then put Furley's babies in there. I don't think she needs just quiet time, I think she just needs to have Isabel nurse the babies. Lactating problems? Yea right. She probably stressed so bad and killed her babies. It's been blown out of proportion about hairless moms not being able to lactate. Most lactate just as well as furred moms.

There are 5 this morning. I took them from Furley. I put them and 2 of Isabel's pups in my cage with a deep pan. Isabel freaked out from being taken from her cage. I put the pups and Joey in Isabel's cage, in the nest that Issy made. She was happy then. She cleaned the pups but they had full bellies so they aren't feeding. I have Isabel's pups in the cage with the deep pan. I'll leave them over there for about an hour or so. They just got done nursing before I made the changes.

that lil fuzzbutt sleeping in there with the babies is too cute. i think you did the right thing. it feels like furley doesn't know what to do to protect her babies because she is too used to tragedy.
i am so glad you can give her a better life free from worries like this. she has seen too much, been thru too much. now she just needs love and emotional healing.

Lets hope this works, by the pics, *thud* that last pic with the little fuzzbutt keeping the eeeepers warm, aaaawww. I think angelratgirl might be right where Furley is concerned and I'll keep everything crossed that Isabel will take the extra five, she's such a good mum

In that last pic, it looks like Joey was sleeping but she was BATHING the baby under her. It was too cute. I hope this is the right thing to do. If they are meant to live then Isabel will be a good momma to the babies. Isabel worried me too though, she took her brood off to feed in another corner of the cage and left the little ones by theirselves. She's got them all together now but I'm still worried.

I am sure Isabel will take care of them.. I saw in pet store where someone had brought in a litter of baby rats.. the pet store had a female that was nursing and they put the babies in with her.. she took care of them as well. I felt bad for her as she had a lot of babies to take care of..
Give it some time. Isabel will come around..
Poor Furley.. I am glad this will be her last litter. She needs lots of time and love.

I am giving her today to rest and then I am going to start intros tomorrow with my 4 younger girls that are very docile. I have my 6 month old and younger girls seperated now from my older girls (too much friction between the dominant females) I hope she enjoys having a mischief to snuggle with and not be constantly bred/ pregnant. Isabel has the babies in a group now. There were at least 2 feeding on her. They still have good milk bellies. Tonight is going to be a long night at work. I leave now and wont be home until 930. Thank you all for the advice and help. I don't know what I would have done without you all.
