How long will my rat live?
«

I have a ruby-eyed albino rat and my teacher (of my Zoology class where i got her) said that she was born on May 28th 2006. I was wondering how long will she live? Just Wondering. . .

Rats can have a varied lifespan... anywhere from a year and a half to 4 years!
Just from what I've seen on these rat forums, I would take an uneducated guess that the average lifespan is somewhere around 2 and a half years.
Perhaps someone on these forums will have a more educated answer for you.
Also -- if your rat was born less than a month ago it should really still be with its mother for about another week... I'm not sure of the situation you are in though.

Pet shop and/or rescue rats on average live about 26 months, but every month after 2 years is to be totally treasured.
Unfortunately some die younger and then there's the longer lived furkids that last 3 years and more.

Everyone is saying that my rat is too young to be away from her mother, but my teacher said that they were lab-raised. But my albino rat (Ivory) looks almost just like your picture of a rat.

well my teacher said that she was born on May 28th 2006. They were from a lab. . . but thats just what he said. My rat looks just a tiny bit smaller than the white rat in the picture from the first post.

Do you mean your rat was born in a lab and raised by people, and never came into contact with it's mother?

Well, my digital camera is broken, so i dont think i am able to take a picture of her, but how do you put a picture on anyway? i cant figure out how. Yes i can get a hold of my teacher, we are going to the zoo tomorrow for a field trip, (so we will not be bringing the rats)So i could ask him about it. But what exactly should i say?
But she looks just a tiny bit smaller than the rat in the picture posted by Lise. (if that helps any)

Ask him if by "lab raised" if the babies were born with a c-section and the mother was sacrificed? Rats born this way do not have mycoplasma and they are used to test on.

Ok, i read the webpage, so does that mean that my rat is garunteed to have that? Is it like a disease like humans asthma? I read the treatments, but are they expensive? do you have to go to a vet to get them? I read how to prevent it, and i think the way she is living should be preventing it, if it ever comes up. I will bookmark that page for future reference. So. . . what should i do?

Watch for the discharge from her eyes or nose, keep her on proper bedding, clean cage, observe how she behaves. For the most part I would say rats are very rewarding interactive pets, but at one point or another they all tend to need some vet care that costs a bit, be it antibiotics, tumor removals, spay/neuter, or PTS.
It is usually a good idea to know of a local exotic vet that has experience with rats, and also put away an emergency vet fund - a hundred dollars at the very least.

Be vigilant. Check your rat for symptoms everyday and get her to the vet at the first sign of illness because they can go downhill fast. The vet will probably prescribe Baytril or Doxy and that will usually clear it up.
But don't get yourself too stressed out. Even though pretty much every rat carries the virus, if you take good care of them you will probably not have a flare up.

Yes, my rats name is Ivory.
So does that mean that my rat is gonna die? Should i not keep her at the end of 3 weeks? Or should i keep her? ( I really like her
) But does she have a disease? or do all rats have that disease dormant in their body, and it can just 'flare up' at any time when she doesnt have the proper care?

All rats will die eventually, just like all humans will and all trees will, etc. Myco is typically dormant and some rats never have a flare in their lives, while others get them chronically. There's just no way to tell. However, myco flares can, indeed, be triggered by another illness, especially if left untreated. That is why veterinary care is so important. As long as you understand this, are willing to get Ivory a friend, and feel that you can do your absolute best for her, you should keep her.

I say keep her and another one or two of your classmates girls, if you have the money and energy and motivation to research the hell out of owning rats to do them right. I'm guessing these rats will be euthanized after class, if no one adopts them as pets.
Myco typically lies dormant unless the rat is under stress or has a weak immune system. Good husbandry goes a LONG way in preventing (or at least minimizing) flareups.
I'd love to have a long talk with your teacher. Sounds like a real idiot passing out live animals like party favors. This is not a jab against you AT ALL, but you're obviously very naive about rats and I think the teacher is doing rats a huge disservice by not giving more information before he brings the animals into his curriculum.
You obviously love little Ivory and I am SO glad you're here!!
Here are some sites I found extremely helpful when I first became interested in rats as pets.
This page was created especially for newbie rat owners. http://members.aol.com/juliesrats/e4nindex.html
http://www.ratbehavior.org/
(a more sciency site, not about general rat care, but very fascinating)
http://www.spoiledratten.com/care.html
(a highly respected breeder's pages on fundamentals of rat care)
http://www.afrma.org/rmindex.htm
(a nice page of links)
Keep reading and asking questions. Rats deserve the very best!

It's a summer class she's taking. I'm guessing it's like some of the summer science classes I took (though I enjoyed them) my mom signed me up for them and I went and did what I was suppose to. Maybe if you get to review the class, or if your parents do, suggest making it a week longer so that you can be educated about proper pet rat care before they are all sent home with you.
I am also curious did you ask him again about the age of the rats?
Is this the first year this class is being offered? Has the rat part always been part of the class?

No, i think that he has been doing the classes for a long time now, and keeps 2 rats from every class he does. So he has been doing the rat thing for a long time now.
But what if i cant get her a friend? Because alot of people in my class want other people's rats that they cant keep, but i also was going to try to get a friend for Ivory, but what if they are all 'taken'?

You can always adopt another rat form a rescue after the class is over and introduce them!

rats don't care what color their friends are. The new rat doesn't have to be a PEW at all!
It does absolutely need to be a female (or neutered male) and close to the same age is good. It's not necessary that they be EXACTLY alike in every way.
