So I've had Winx for 4 weeks now and am looking into getting her another rattie to play and cuddle with. I got her from a small, local pet shop which was selling rats mainly as feeders. I would like to get a dumbo rat as my second rat but am curious if the only way to get one is through a breeder? I stopped into PetCo a few days ago and asked about dumbo rats and one of the employee said that they don't choose really which rats they get in, probably cause they're also mainly feeders. Any suggestions? Is the only way to get a dumbo through a breeder?

Try a local rescue first, if you don't or can't find a breeder.
And don't forget to quarantine!

Pet stores have them from time to time, but that is not really the ideal way to go IMO. They don't really care about them(if they are selling live animals, then they do not truly care about them. period.), and buying from them is just supporting poor breeding, neglect, and the ever growing amount of unwanted animals out there. Sorry to babble..lol. The best place to check is a rescue, which do get even dumbos(just look in the adoptions section of this board for proof!), and if that fails then someone here may be able to point you in the direction of good breeder.

I have two dumbos that I got from a breeder, I've never seen any dumbos at pet stores.
