Yeah.... I have no willpower... But I did sort of think it would be good for Emily to have an age mate  to be best buddies with since she would maybe end up as sort of a third wheel to piper and dumbo... so introducing... little no name... I am thinking either Fira, Phoebe, or Eowyn. Any other options or votes for these 3?

Here she is, do you think blue or russian blue? I am leaning towards russian myself..

Soo adorable!!  I've always wanted a blue!!
I'm sure Emily will love her!!  I think she looks like a Phoebe.  I think that fits most with Emily too.
Are you quarantining?  I wish we didn't have to because I want to introduce Fiona to my new girls!!  Two more weeks... Tongue

Mauve, after being lectured previously about quarantine you went out and bought yet another rat from a pet store knowing full well you are technically in quarantine?!  Why?!  She's beautiful and all, but that was just the worse mistake you could have made.

Russian Silver is Russian Blue & American blue combined.

as I updated in the other thread: EMILY UPDATE: I don't feel the need to send out for a blood test because I am almost 99.9% sure she does not have SDA or Sendai. There is no lethary, no redness around the eyes, and no neck swelling more than is normal to feel for a being that is sick (lymph nodes and all) I think it was just a really bad repiratory infection turned pneumonia due to lack of care by the store. So I am going to keep her in quarantine until the end of her antibiotics (we are on day  and then maybe a week after that to make sure nothing else goes wrong.

Also, this rat is in quarantine at my boyfriends house, where there are no rats. She will be introduced after sufficient time has passed.

If she were mine, I'd totally name her something grim/dark sounding.  Of course, I always feel the urge to do that with grey/black animals.

I agree with ShadowWolf, though.  As annoying as quarantining an animal is, it's also very important.  Considering that she came from a pet store, just like the other one you recently brought home, she could have ANY number of problems.  I remember when I first brought home Gabriel and Morgan, both from Petsmart.  They both had terrible cases of mites and URIs.  It cost me around $300 at the vet's office to finally get them well enough to where I could even CONSIDER bringing another rat into the house.  People on here aren't lecturing you without reason.  A lot of people have had horrible situations spawn from bringing home pet store rats.  It may suck, but it's in your current rats' best interest (along with yourself/wallet) to house them somewhere else (completely different air space), for 2-3 weeks.

That's fine about not doing an ELISA - I honestly didn't think you'd do it.  However, if you're going to be following the RSA guidelines like you'd said you wanted to you must quarantine Emily and your other rats for a minimum of two months after the last symptoms of illness are gone.  I've said my piece though.  Good luck.

good idea!

She is 6 weeks old. I had seen her and her brothers and sisters (many double rex/patchwork/hairless, carrying RED) at 3 weeks with their mom and they were just too cute, so I kind of had it in the back of my mind to come back when they were old enough.. She was scared at first but then cuddled into my hand and shirt and just let me pet her and walk around with her forever...I just couldn't put her back in the tank after the amount of comfort she seemed to take from me..

Oh and SOA, she is in quarantine, and if you have any name suggestions I would gladly hear them!

Well I did take it seriously you know, I strongly considered doing it. I found out how much my vet would charge ($30) plus and upwards of $35 at charles river depending on how many things I wanted to check for (it is no longer ELISA but someother new way starting with R plus two more letters as an abbreviation), plus I would have to overnight the blood there on dried ice. That would have cost me about 80-90 dollars or more just for one test, and since Emily doesn't seem to be worsening, and doesn't show any of the more ominous symptoms of those diseases, I didn't want to put her through the trauma and me through the financial burden.

But seriously, why two months? Can you give me the logic behind that exact time period? Just wondering, not trying to be a smart ass.

Yeah, imagine the fact that I did that - along with a TON of money to put into trying to take care of the *three* animals that were in my home (including the one I ran the ELISA on that was later euthanized).  It's not cheap.  I didn't say it was, but it's something to put your mind at ease.

Honestly, the logic is to give time for the virus to run its course and for the rats to be healthy.  As to why it's two months, you will have to take that up with the members of the RSA who formed their system.  I personally think it's excellent and recommend ninety days if possible.  It's just safer - especially if you are a breeder/plan to breed.
