Yup, they can get pregnant by 6 weeks (give or take) and she looks to be 12 weeks or so, so the possibility exists.  I'm a little surprised she hasn't already had a litter, actually, but I don't see any obvious nipples, so it doesn't look like she's nursing anyone...

Sorry balego, but it has been pointed out to me that the ONRMCA is not being very rescue friendly lately with their new policies on how rescue posts are dealt with.  An unfortuate situation, and it makes me wonder if the general RMCA organization is on board with that type of policy being brought into affect.  I know that Ontario is always saturated with homeless rats, and policies like that are detrimental to all of them.
Good thing that this forum has been always very supportive in finding homeless rats new homes, and that you found your way here.
You might also try Canada Rat Adoption on yahoo groups.  That is a group that is 100% dedicated to homeless rats.  They can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Canada-Rat-Adoption/.

Hoping for your sake there will be no eepers. However, I think you're doing a marvelous job and i'm sure you can handle it if they do turn up. I do wish I lived near you so I could help out! What a gorgeous girl, so sweet looking!

She is certainly a wonderful little agouti cutie, thanks so much for being a lovely person, being concerned about our gorgeous ratties, for saving her and looking after her.  We often say these ratties know how to pick out their new mums and dads, they seem to have a knack.  I hope you will be able to catch the other boy soon.  Smiley Heart

One thing I am thinking.. now that you know one is female and the other is male, what are you going to do if you catch him? Obviously he can't go in the same cage with her. And I do hope she isn't pregnant. With the stress of being outside at such a young age, there is a good chance she isn't. All you can do is hope.

The gestation period is usually 23-28 days and sometimes they don't show at all until you go in and find babies. Just to warn you. But you'll probably notice nesting habits if she does.

Good luck in catching her Cheesy She's a beauty. Can't wait to see the boy.

*ADD ON*
Also.. I wonder if perhaps they were set loose because of the rescue policy that has been put into effect? Maybe a previous owner or owners could not get a rescue to take them and set them loose. It's hard to tell, but it is something the rescues need to consider..

Great job catching the little girl!  She is so cute.  I would get her off of the pine because it causes them respiratory problems.  If you have newspaper you could tear some up and put it in there.  Also, if you have some old clothes you can cut them up and use it as bedding.  Good luck catching the other one!  The little girl is lucky to have such a caring person looking after her.

Good job!  That is definately NOT a wild rat.  She's a very cute young female.  I also wonder if someone released a whole unwanted litter out there.  Poor things!  Good luck with trying to capture the male and please keep us updated.

Oh you are such an awesome person  sunny Thank You for caring enough to help these guys. That girl is just so cute and looks sooooo very sweet. There are a few people on the forum who may be close. I think KellyNZoo does some rat rescue in the London area of Ontario. Not sure if that's even close but you could send her a PM she's been a member here for a long time.

Good luck catching the boy.

You might think about getting a Havahart trap. I know in the US you can get them at Home Depot for around $20. Or like someone else said, perhaps a rescue would loan one/a different humane trap out. If you do catch the male you would need to keep him seperate from the female. She sure is a cutie.

She's a real sweetie! So glad that you managed to get her Smiley Vanessa gave a good link, Canada Rat Adoption is another good place to start looking for homes. I'm also sorry about whats happening on ONRMCA, it really grates me. Undecided

Any news of the other ratty? Lots of good advice here, I really hope you can get them both safely indoors! Unfortunately she does look old enough to have babies, lets hope that this isn't the case. Keep us updated, and I'm really happy that you are going out of your way to help these rats Smiley

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond... other committments here keep me from having the time to write posts (I am not the fastest typist). Thanks for all your responses. I do live far from London, but someone has come forward offering to take her but they live four hours away and might be able to arrange something. I'm in a hurry so havent responded to that note so if youre reading, hang onto that thought, okay? Wink

spotted the male yesterday morning but havent seen any sign of him since. I did, however, notice very quickly that he seemed to have a lump on his side, and a scab. Only got a very quick impression of that when he bolted across the yard. What could that be?

The little girl is more active today and is eating well. I am a coward and havent picked her up, but I have stroked her head and she 'seems' okay with it, closing her eyes. Is this good? For all I know she could be wincing thinking I'm going to crush her, I know nothing about rat behaviour and signs of contentment or fear. She wont yet take food from my fingers.
I'm in such a hurry I feel bad for posting and running, but I am still hanging in here looking for help to find a home. I appreciate all your help and encouragement.
She is beside me on my desk and I check on her often. Right now she is snuggled up like a kitten with her tail curled around her, snoozing.

Sounds like the little girl is doing good!  Great job taking care of her!

Maybe that suspected lump on the male could have been from a fight/encounter with another animal?  I'm sure others will have a more educated guess on that than me.

I would think the lump is an absess that will hopefully drain on its own (sometimes they need help draining).  I do hope you catch the other boy.  He is probably in a lot of pain Sad  and terrified.
The girl closing her eyes while you pet her is a VERY good sign.  Sounds like she is beginning to get used to human contact.  Try putting a treat on a spoon instead of your fingers and then she will get used to taking things from people.  You should start with something she can grab away and then progress to baby food or yogurt that she has to sit there to enjoy.  The more she gets used to contact the more likely she is to find a happy forever home.  Also, try picking her up wrapped in a towel.  It is safe for both of you and she could just sit on your lap for a bit and be cuddled.  I think she would enjoy that Smiley  I wish I could take her, but I only have boys and am down in Massachusetts so...  Good luck and keep us posted.  This story is very touching  Heart

but it has been pointed out to me that the ONRMCA is not being very rescue friendly lately with their new policies on how rescue posts are dealt with.

Just to clarify Vanessa, yes, the ONRMCA has had some recent problems with the rescue part of the forum, and at present are trying to work out a new format for it, judging by the rules posted here some of which are --

1. You must be a registered member of the forum to contact anyone from our board about an adoption.

2. Send the original poster a private message regarding the adoption if you are interested.

3. If you have generic questions about the rats up for adoption that may benefit other forum members, feel free to ask them in a reply to the original post. Other more specific inquiries should be done by private message.

Remember, The Adoption Center is NOT for brow-beating people, publicly questioning their intentions, or other off-topic discussion. If you are interested in adopting, feel free to participate in the thread with relevant questions that may benefit the community (example: asking someone where they are located if they have not stated that information). Otherwise, let people conduct business in peace.

It sounds like this forum has gone through similar growing pains in the rescue area.  ONRMCA is rescue friendly, they are just trying to nip a problem in the bud and will have a new format sorted out shortly.  These two rats have been posted on ONRMCA and there is contact information there too.  Lets not beat each other up, we all have these rats interests at heart Wink

I saw the pictures that you took of that boy, that is a nasty wound on his side.  I am concerned about infection, and this heatwave that Ontario is going through.
Have you had anyone in your area come forward to help you trap him?  Have you been able to get your hands on a humane trap?  I so wish that I lived closer, I always have a trap with me and I would lend a hand, it is so sad.
He looks in good shape right now, but he really needs medical attention for that wound.
Keep us posted when you can.

Oh my.  Poor poor guy  Cry  He looks so incredibly starved and that wound looks excruciatingly painful Sad  I hope he can be caught and given a good home.  I'm beginning to doubt whether either of them could reproduce so hopefully there won't be babies.  She looks so thin and young and he looks like he just doesn't have any drive of life left in him.  Poor kiddos.

The female and male were actually not hanging out together but were in different parts of the yard.  The male had disappeared til last night, so balego is going to bait a cage and try to catch him now.  Lets hope it works!!!!
