Now here's a question for you...do you think the poor male had one on his side?  It just didn't look quite like an abscess to me.

That doesn't look like an abscess to me. It looks like it could be either a wound, parasites or possibly both at the same site. He is definitely going to need vet care

I'd do it for my own rats in a heart beat, but Balego is in a different situation. Most people would have left the rats to fend for themselves, she's already done more than that. A vet visit will cost money that she might not have to spare. I find it despicable that people allow their own pets to mate when they can't support a litter, because it was their responsibility, they either mated them or kept them in such a condition an accidental mating could occur. This however, how much responsibility does Balego have to the rat? It's really up to her.

I applaud Balego for rescuing this poor girl and seeking advice and I realize that she has gone above and beyond what most people would do. However, if this were a rescued dog or a cat in the same situation would you not expect their rescuer to get them veterinary attention?

Another thing to suggest. This parasite needs to be able to breathe. If something thick is put over the area that blocks oxygen, it might try to crawl out for a short time to breathe, giving the opportunity for her to grab it!

...

If you can get a collar or something to keep her from chewing on the area (temporarily of course) try attaching a piece of raw bacon over the parasite. It may be drawn to the bacon and burrow into it.

The smothering idea is great. Because of the babies, I wouldn't try the bacon trick. There is too much risk of infection. The last thing you need or want is to lose the mum to infection.

Balego and I are discussing vet care.  I emailed her an idea and am waiting for her to send me a reply back.  Right now she is out trying to catch the male again.  Tongue

Hahaha... finally Bev's husband's heart turned to mush and Rennie is off to the vet. I love it!!
My hubby is the same way. It takes some sweet talking and some rattie pouty looks to turn that macho man into a teddy bear!  Wink
Bev you are a wonderful person!! I am amazed at how much you give of yourself to these rats. All I can say, is I bet your birds are SOOOOO spoiled!!!
My only regret, is I'm 5 hours away from you... I would be there in an instant. In fact, I may see you in mid Aug, to pick up the rattie family.  Grin

The wee girl is back from the vet.  Smiley  She had 4 nasty buggers removed and the vet clinic was wonderful, as well as fascinated.   Roll Eyes
Total cost for that and the betadine she was sent home with was $98.00.
Bev also knows how to deal with anymore at home if they show up.  For anyone in the future who is reading this thread as a search because you have the same problem, you squeeze and pull them out...thats it.  Smiley

Bev feels a whole ton better, and I now feel like I got The Call from my vet and my rat made it thru surgery just fine...LOLOLOL

For all the people who contacted me privately, you are all amazing for your offers and support.
I forwarded copies of all  the PM's to Bev and just read them to her over the phone...she almost got teary at hearing that people far from her would care so much about her situation and these poor rats.
I have told her that we need to get some pics of the little eepers when she is able...hahaha.  Tongue

I just wanted to say that I have been a member here for awhile and have watched here in Toronto when everyone has banded together to help out rats in a terrible situation...either fostering, or transport, or adoption.  Its been soo inspiring to see this show of humanity.  I am sure all of us have seen some horrible things with our "disposable" pets but things like this give me back my optimism and fire to keep helping a little bit at a time.
We have done some smaller scale rescues and transport runs here in Ontario, etc with a group of like-minded rat people but not to the extent of what I have witnessed through this board.  Makes me proud to know you.

4?!?!?!   Shocked 2 Poor girl...  I'm sure she's feeling much better now, though.  And someone needs to give that vet a kiss.  Smiley  I imagine, if she ever catches the male, he'll need to go through much the same thing...  Poor dears.

So glad to hear they are gone.  She must feel so much better.  Kudos to Bev and the vet!  Yes, we would love to see some pics of the babies!  Once again, what a wonderful thing you are doing for these ratties.  Good luck with the male.  At least now you know how to get rid of the nasties!!!

icon_cheers YAY for an awesome vet!!! Poor baby girl...1 seemed bad but 4!!! Yikes!!

Shelagh, I'm sure you have been like a rock to her. You've been awesome too. All we want as rat lovers is to help any way we can. These poor rats have been through enough and so has Bev. Like I've mentioned I'm willing to help out where I can. I just hope that boy is caught soon and if he's still "infested" she can take care of it at home.

(((HUGS))) to Bev and kisses  Kiss to Rennie Rat!!! I'm sure she was a perfect angel angel1 for the vet.

4?!?! in the same hole??!?!?  Oh my!  Nasty, nasty, nasty!

I'm really happy that everything is going to be okay for her though!  If I could afford it, I would have offered to pay the bill, but we are so low on cash right now.

I'm not usually squeamish about bugs but ...    confused2 tard

Yuck.. 4? Where were all of them, the same hole or unnoticed elsewhere? icon_puke_l I hope I never have to deal with any of those. And I'm glad that they are gone. Now she will undoubtedly have more energy for her work with the babies.

And yes, we want pictures!!

Evil mother nature for making nasty bugs that have no purpose in the scheme of things except make us nauseous!

I am back from the vet with Rennie, and wanted to update everyone and also express my deepest thanks and appreciation for the support and concern shown to me and Rennie over this last week or so. It has been a truly amazing experience, not only discovering such wonderful people who are willing to jump in and give help and advice, but to Rennie, who has opened my eyes and heart. I'll never forget this, nor will I forget her. Nor will I forget all of you, who have come forward here and even behind the scenes, there are so many of you that I havent even sorted out who you all are, but you have my most heartfelt thanks! What a terrific bunch of people you are!

The hurdle I had to get by today, with regards to getting Rennie to the vet, was not one of not being able to afford it,. but one of wanting to have the support of my husband. It isnt that he wouldnt put forth the funds, and we did have them. But a few years ago we went through a similar experience where someone else's neglect became a very long and emotional and expensive road for us. He was gunshy to go there again, and I can understand where he was coming from. He wasnt refusing... I hadnt gotten up the nerve to bring up the subject because he hasnt forgotten our last experience. I wont go into details of that, but I hope you all understand that when you are dependant on someone else financially, it can become touchy if they might not be quite as willing to go the mile that you (or I) are. As it turned out the cost was minimal.. that wasnt the issue, but we were pleasantly surprised.

So, on to Rennie. She indeed had warbles, and the vet removed four of them. The one huge one on her rear, the two most recent irruptions that I was praying were abscesses, and one on her belly. Those last three were small, just starting their cycle. She said there may be more that will come forward, and I can just squeeze them out of there and flush the area to keep it clean. She explained that the eggs are breathed in and travel through the lungs (if I'm understanding this correctly), and then find their way to the skin where they then burrow in to develop, until they eventually fall out and continue their life cycle. They are found mostly near rabbit burrows.

Rennie seems fine, I am to flush with saline three times a day and use the Betadine twice a day, and to call her if there is any concern. It was a very interesting learning experience for me and my husband, who I might say was just in awe when he saw what came out of her! A little bit replusion and a whole lot of fascination.  Right now the warbles are dying a nice slow death in a pill bottle on my desk here... my heart doesnt extend to saving warbles, thank goodness. Wink

I will take and post photos in a while. My son, who tried to help me remove the botfly yesterday, has gone back to his home in Hamilton today and just called to say they had a safe trip. If it hadnt been for babies and botflies, Rennie would have been on her way with him to some of the most wonderful people on this board who came forward to offer a place for her. Right now, she needs to stay here until she and the babies are okay to travel.

As for the male.. 'Hobo'. He will no doubt have the same issues I'm sure. I am now convinced that the large scab on his side was a warble and it came out on its own. But there has to be more, no question in my mind. I continue each day to try to catch him. He is a challenge but as long as I keep seeing him I will keep trying. This is going to end one way or another and I am in it for the long haul.

I need to eat something. I need to just sit outside and watch the birds for a bit and then I'll take some photos.

Shelagh has been by my side the right from the beginning, and girl, you are the best of the best. I cannot find the words that adequately convey how greatful I am to you. I'm just so thankful that this roller-coaster of an experience has brought people like you into my life. (((((hugs))))

I'm so glad the vet was able to take care of those nasty buggers before they did too much damage. I'm sure she'll be much happier now. She knew what she was doing in revealing herself to you that day in the garden.

You're doing a great job. *hugs*

I can't believe she had 4 of those things in her!!  Puppy Dog Eyes: At least they're gone now, and she's in great care.  If any extra money is need (say, once the male is caught and needs vet care) I can also send some in through paypal.  You RULE, Bev!!!!

menagerie and topaz, thankyou for your support and kindness. Menagerie, I apologise for not remembering offhand as I tend to lose my brains sometimes when a little stressed and so much going on at once, but I believe it was you who sent the links to the botfly info, and if it wasnt for that I would never have realised this is what she had. Thanks so much, and hugs back to you. Topaz, once again the generosity and willingness of people such as yourself to offer help has overwhelmed me, not to mention is opening my husbands eyes to just what wonderful and caring people are out there, who dont even know us yet are there with such kindness.

I have to stop my train of thought here to say that Rennie is up on her ramp and just looking at me and its almost like a connection just happened.
To think that a week ago I didnt want to touch her....but I think a mutual trust thing just happened. Smiley

I was talking to my husband a few minutes ago on the phone. He is stuck at work for a couple more hours, but we were laughing about this whole thing. I was enjoying a glass of wine on my deck, (all by myself but I felt I should treat myself), having just taken pics of the infamous warbles (which wouldnt stay still btw), and he said " I was thinking about this at the vets... that I was in the middle of solving problems on a 2.8 million dollar contract and I had to leave to take a rat to get a warble removed from her butt." He now has a name for the people he runs into during his job that cause him problems and are a pain in the butt. He used to refer to them as hemmorhoids.. He said he can call them a warble "And they wont even know what I mean." lol!

My neighbour is back from her holidays and I warned her that if she sees a rat running around, not to freak out and run out for poison. Without going into details with her, I assured her I'm handling it. If I had remembered to bring the camera card up here with me I would be posting the photos of the warble, but I forgot it. Next time..

I need to add.. Adventurerats, you were the one that pm'd about the warbles. ThankYOU! I am confused with who is who and who said what over the past few days, but I want you to know I'm very greatful. I had to look in my pms, and I have emails to go back through and I dont want to miss thanking anyone personally. One of you lives in Ottawa (would have to change pages to find your name, but you know who you are). You offered medication and syringes and food, and anything else like that I need, and please know that you didnt go unnoticed. Many thanks for your kind offer. Smiley
I dont want to leave anyone out, you are all so terrific!

gosh, I had one other thing I wanted to mention and it's evading me.. thinking.. thinking.. its not coming... I hate that!  Balloon (assuming that smiley means airhead?)

Anyway, thankyou again, all of you.
