Rat Lover!

« on: August 10, 2006, 03:48:07 PM »

UPDATE  8/15:  I went to visit the rats today and bring treats  Yellow Cute Laugh.  The 5 left (2 females, 3 males) have all settled down nicely and the techs are spoiling them rotten!  They have all calmed down and although not used to a lot of handling, no one bites and they are pretty friendly.  The 'tumor' on the one male turned out to be a cyst which was drained and is healing nicely!  They are still looking for forever homes!

My vet called me today and told me that they had 7 rats surrendered that they will re-home.  The vet's office is fine with fostering them until they can find homes.  I ran down there (took pics, which I will post later) to see the rats.
There are 4 females about a year old (1 PEW, 3 Black hooded).  There were alert and active.  They did bite one of the techs through the cage bars but did not bite when a hand was put into the cage.  They are handlable but skittish and obviously not used to being picked up.  There are 2 males in one cage (probably about a year and a half old) , a black hooded that has some sort of tumor on his shoulder (hopefully the vet would remove it for a reduced price.....), he didn't want to be picked up but calmed down upon being held.  His brother was a dark gray with a while belly - he has a small bumble on one foot - he was very scared so we didn't try to pick him up.   The last one is the daddy to all of the rest - he has always lived alone he is at least 1 1/2 years old (I'm thinking I bet it's older) - he is dark gray with a white belly and he was easily handled and was a big squish.  When I went back to bring food for them, the techs had just bathed him and I got to see him up close - he did have 'snuffles' which I am sure they will be treating.

Right now, that's all I know......... I really cannot take these rats right now.  They are being given great care now, and are in capable hands but would love a forever home.  Please e-mail me direct and I'll put you in contact:  reedross@comcast.net

I simply cannot upload pics to the site, even when I follow all the directions - so I created a webpage that you can view some pics on:  http://aprildawnspage.homestead.com/vetrats.html

UPDATE:  Someone came today and took the PEW female and one black hooded female.  I have agreed to take the lone male IF no one can take him by 9/18 (when I will be back from my trip).  Someone from the Rat Fanciers club (no CLUE who this is, didn't even know there was anyone in the area!) came by and said they would help find homes for them also!

ummm... I hope you get a response. How much time do they have at the vet's until they need to be gone? I wanted to say that the GARMCA helps place rats that are surrendered from private sources into good loving forever homes. Even though we are not a full time rescue operation, we do a little bit when we can to help out. We are based in Atlanta, Georgia but do sometimes help out in neighbooring states. Our availability to take in is dependent on availability of quarantine room, fosters, available interested homes and resources but contact me off list and I will see what I can do.

I got the impression they would keep them until they got homes............. they promised the lady who surrendered them that they would find them homes.  I 'may' take the lone male (if they can foster him until mid Sept) and they said that another person was considering taking two of the females.  The techs there are really fabulous and I was impressed that the vet office even agreed to take them. I will keep this thread updated!  Thanks
