Gates?
«

Does anyone have any good ideas for gates? We want to rat proof our sitting room but it has no doors. Most of the pet gates/baby gates I've found have slats that would not hold a rat. I saw one solid one for 100$ and that's a bit out of my price range! Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tenili

Hi! I'm new here, but I have an idea that you may be interested in. My dad made his own low cost gate for his den to keep their golden retriever out. What he did was took four pieces of quarter molding trim that he bought at Home depot, and had them cut him a plexiglass square. Then he put two pieces of the trim on each side of the door frame, with a space in between just big enough to drop the plexi sheet in. It was fairly cheap, and looks nice too, also when its not in use, he just slides it under the sofa. I thought this might work for rats, because with the plexi glass there is nothing to climb.

Cloroplast board works well as long as you get a large enough piece.
It is what they print signs on mostly.
I guess just go into a sign printing shop and ask about it. I believe it was Jorats on here who had a bunch of it, perhaps she could pipe in where she purchased it.

i had normal babygates blocking my doors. the rats neeever bothered them. the ferrets on the other hand have recently learned they can climb......i got a full sheet of cloroplast for about $30 and cut it into the sizes i needed and ziptied it to the gates i already had. if it weren't for the fact that we should be moving soon, i would definately try out amanda's idea.

Plexi glass can be expensive I believe, but being able to see through it is a plus.
$30 for a sheet of coro is expensive. I can get a sheet of white for half that. I would look in the phone book under "signs" and see what you can find.. I know a lot about it seeing that I make my guinea pig cages out of it.

I took one of our old baby gates with slats in it and cut cardboard to fit it, then punched holes in the cardboard and attached the carboard to the gate with string.
