Ratless...But they live on in my heart

« on: August 11, 2006, 05:40:09 AM »

Archie had his Abode on his 1st Birthday, 1 of his presents with two ladders, a new hammock and some treats. Most of his toys are in there at the moment, but I still need to get him to drill the holes to put his Leap n' Ledges in.

I also plan to get some new things, because his old furniture doesn't really fill it up and it looks a bit bare. I am getting a Terracotta pot as a hiding place and bed resting place for him at the weekend, and also a climbing ropes and whatever else I can find. Suggestions would be appreciated!

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please share them  Cheesy
I hope my little Arch loves his Abode. I plan to get a pair of bubbas as company for him in a few weeks time hopefully, and I will keep them in his old cage and gradually introduce them so he can share his Abode  Wink

Sorry I rambled, and there are boxes in the picture because I've just moved house ( Very stressful with a dog, a cat, two birds and a rat! But they've all settled fine thankfully  Smiley)

And as for his Birthday cake - He refused to acknowledge it and kept shoving past the plate as if it wasn't there, but finally he agreed to sulkily pose for a quick picture with he cake.

Beautiful cage! If I hadn't already ordered my martins R695, I would have made one like that.

Wow, that's gorgeous! Well done! As for Archie, it seems he doesn't like being the center of attention.   Roll Eyes Happy birthday hansome man.

Nope, he doesn't! Hopefully when I get his bubba's he will want more attention  Blue Dumbo Smile  I think three adult males is the right amount for the cage, it could probably hold four but I can never settle at giving animals their reccomended sized cages, I always have to give them extra  Yellow Cute Laugh

Imagine Archie having that all to himself...He hasn't even seen the bottom two levels yet, so he'll have a shock when he goes down that ladder  Cheesy

Wow, that is a neat looking cage. It always amazes me what some of you guys can build  ... I have trouble putting ikea furniture together. Roll Eyes

I especially like the wooden level thigny on the third level. Did you make it yourself? And on the top level, is that a see saw type thing like in kids playground? Also clever to put one of the ladders on the brick to have them walk on it frequently.

I think Archie's pouting because there are no candles on his cake ... but I'm pretty sure he likes his new stylish digs

I didn't make the wooden steps on the third level, and I didn't make the wooden seesaw either - They were both bought from an organic food shop which has a little pet bit. That was the last place I would expect to get good toys like that! They were both fairly cheap, £6 each. At the moment Archie can't use the top, largest step of the wooden thing on the third level, so we will be cutting some more of that level off so he can use it.

And as for candles, poor Archie had to go without as I rummaged through about 7 boxes (Since we've just moved) and I couldn't find them anywhere. By then it was too late to go and get some at the shop. I begged him for my forgiveness and gave him extra yoggies  Puppy Dog Eyes:

By the way I forgot to say - The seesaw is excellent, Archie loves it. He seems to get a little thrill out of it each time he goes on it, as it slowly goes down when he gets to the end. I am thinking about making a little agility course, using the seesaw like in Dog agilities, and using his tube and his arch to go over as well  Cheesy

I have been wanting to make something like that for the girls, I think it's such a good idea!
I dream of a lovely cage that could one day be merged with my livingroom furniture..... *sigh*. I guess I'd need a living room for that.

I was considering making a cage like this but I can't for the life of me figure out how to keep the wood from soaking up the pee.  The pee has to be able to soak in between the laminate on the shelf.  Seems like it would be real yucky.

Everything I've read about cages like this say they are incredibly easy to clean... but I'm sure it's easier with litter trained rats. K&M, you'll have to tell us how it all works out for you when you've had the cage in use for a while!

Yep, I will - and OldsGal, to stop the pee from soaking into the corners, you stick the strips of adhesive plastic sheeting over the corners so that it starts at the bottom and the top of the strip is at the top. This completely protects the corners, sides and back. We also painted with non toxic paint, and I've found that when he does pees on levels, it does stay on top and I just wipe as I see them

I may be getting a trio of Dumbo brothers to keep Archie company in his Abode... I was planning on getting two, but when there is three you just CAN'T leave one on their poor little ownsy, can you?
