Olly has just come back from a friends who looked after him whilst I was on holiday and his Lump has got bigger, he doesnt seem to be in any discomfort, but I am so worried because His lump is growing quite quickly, surgery is not an option because of his age and his breathing. I dont know what to do, will he show if he is any pain? I just dont want him to suffer  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

"You'll know."  When he can no longer get around, when he can't feed himself, or drink.  When he's lost that spark in his eyes, and he 'pleads' to be released from this awful lump.  When his quality of life is non-existant.  Rats live quite a while with lumps, and it seems to bother us more than them.  Give him lots of extra cuddles and a cookie.  Smiley

Thanks! Luckily It is in quite a nice place for him (on his shoulder) so He can still get on with things quite well!

How old is he? I'm just curious why surgery isn't an option.  How is his overall health?  Shoulder lumps are VERY easily removed ...

He is about 2 years and 2 months, He has mild respitory. And the vet advised us against surgery, Im tempted as It does look easily removed but I dont want to risk ending his life early  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

tumours often get big very very quick.  Sad If your boy has respiratory issues then its not worth the chance to have it removed.   He can live a long time with a tumour (esp. one thats situated where it is), a lot of the issue is your own mental state.  Just remember that a rat doesn't think "OMG I am disabled" they just deal and are happy with life overall.  Its you that will be in the mental anguish and thats what the members here are for.  Crying. moaning, worrying and debating.  I have an old old boy who has a massive tumour thru his abdomen but he hasn't said he wants to leave yet.  His eyes are bright, I am managing his discomfort with a low dose of metacam and he still trundles around my apartment happily.  I have to groom him and check for penis plugs twice a day but other than that he is pretty happy.

I found a tumor on my 3 year old boy in March.  It finally got too big just a few weeks ago. I attempted to have it removed, because his actions told me he wasn't ready to go.  I know your boy can't have surgery, but I regret not having this one removed early.  But, Rex went on another 5 months with his tumor.  Yes, they do grow quickly.  At the end, this tumor was the size of my palm.  Sad

I think you should take him back to the vet and see what they say.

Sit down with your boy and talk to him.  You'll really know when it's his time by doing this.  It's a hard decision to make- but his whole life has been about you and this final decision needs to be about him.  I've had to let several of my boys go and to this day I'll sometimes have sleepless nights because I miss them so much.  The other night I would have given anything to bury my face in my old boy Dexter's furs and just breath in, to kiss his monkey toes, to squeal- "D!!!" and watch him run to the cage door for me....

That's the sad part of owning a pet, but moreso with a rodent- they don't ever live as long as you want them to and when they leave, they're so weaved into every part of your life, that they take a piece of you when they go.

I wish you all the strength in this world with this decision.

I'm sorry you're in this situation.  It's so hard to be logical when these guys are so deeply in our hearts.  That's why sometimes it's really necessary to get an objective opinion from the vet.  The doctor may want to try a round of strong medications.  If there's no improvement within several days, then you'll know for sure what the next step is.  Please take him to the vet.   At least you won't feel so helpless.   It may not be time to put him to sleep, but he needs professional help for his breathing.

Sometimes we're so confused that we feel paralyzed and instead of doing something...anything...we do nothing, because we're just not sure.  So I'm gonna just be blunt here.  Olly is suffering.  Get Olly to the doctor.

Hugs,
Robin

It seem they always do that when we are going to take them to the vet.   Roll Eyes Its confusing but he still needs the vet, because he will go downhill again soon.  Your vet won't just look at his mental attitude but his health overall.

Yep, they try so hard to hide their illnesses.  It's common to see the roller coaster of sick/healthy.  He still should go to the vet because the "faking it" is going to wear him down quickly.

Don't worry Lauren, he will go downhill again soon, and then your mom will realize he needs vet care ASAP.  Lets hope its not a sudden drop in health.  Sad  Keep an eye on him carefully.

Aww Lauren, I'm sorry your mom is being stubborn.  What about your dad?  Think he could twist her arm for you?   Do you have a pretty good relationship with Olly's vet?  Would he maybe talk to you (or a parent) on the phone and prescribe antibiotics without a visit?

Big smooches to Olly.  I love him to pieces after watching his videos last night.  Had to watch them several times.   Heart

Mom, c'mon now!!   Cookie This is "Olly even" we're talking about!!

Begging from across the ocean,
Robin
