I'm glad he's going to the vet. He's going to feel so much better when he can breathe properly.

I know how it feels ... but remember that even if the vet says there is nothing me he can do and you should put your rat down, he can't force you to do it. As your rat's mom, you're the one that knows him best and you will know when it's time ... they really do tell us.

Rats can survive pneumonias, it's not a death sentence. I had a little rescue that was breathing like your boy and even gasping at time for more than a month and the vet basically told me not to expect him to live because his immune system was not working and he was responding to no antibiotics. Well he did. His lungs were very damaged but he went to to live 18 months of hyperness and popcorning and mischief ... miracles are few and far in between but they can happen ... and besides, often not knowing can be worse than anything else.

i know this is a very hard problem because i only just about a week ago had a rat who paased he was like a best friend or more like a  brother or son, and he was ill for at least 4 months with a on going breathing problem the vet didnt seem to think that he was ready to be put down, i would recomend taking him to the vets and seeing what he says, he might be able to drain the lump if it is just liquid inside PLESE REMEBER I AM NOT  A VET i have a rat at the momebnt and he has a lump it has not grown really so i have just left it, but you can make the decision the vet could also tell you whether he is in pain, if you chose the right vets it is not that expensive
good luck
