I bought a bag of rat food mix and a bag of lab blocks, but after taking a closer look at the ingredients I found that they weren't very healthy (lots of seeds, corn, etc). Can someone suggest a good brand for lab blocks/mix? Also, I heard something about a brand of mix/lab blocks (not sure which) called Harlan. Is that a good brand, and it is sold in Canada? Sorry about all the questions ^^;. Thanks Smiley

Harlan Teklad isn't readily sold in Canada, but you can order it online from Kim's Ark Rescues for $1/lb and it will help this amazing rescue as well.  Cheesy

If you have a PetSmart nearby you can get Mazuri blocks from them.  Lab blocks with plenty of fruit and veggies are the best diet for your pet rat.

If you are unable to find good lab blocks you can always make up Suebee's mix (search that one).

Hmmm...I'm trying to figure out how I got my Canadian Flag under my nick...you don't have one so I was gonna suggest getting one.  That way people could tailor their questions when they know you live in Canada.

The flag appears when you put your location on the member map.

Hagen Nutriblocks are readily available in Canada and not horrible... I think they are comparable to Mazuri (for those of us who don't have a Petsmart).

However I heard that they may be being discontinued?

There is also Oxbow Regal Rat that is available throughout lots of Canada - http://www.oxbowhay.com/link.sp?page=International_Canada

That looks good, but on the site it says "The Ark accepts Checks, Money Orders, and credit card payments through Paypal." I do have paypal, but no credit card. As for money orders, they always seem to get "lost" >_>;. Do you (or anyone else) know of another site which sells Harlan Blocks online?

Any feed stores nearby? They might be able to get Mazuri or Harlan lab blocks at a much better price than ordering online or the tiny 2 lb bags sold in pet stores

Not right by me, but I do have the phone number of two stores, I guess I could give 'em a call. Though I'm not sure they would be able to stock it in time.

Couldn't you mail your money order so it has to be signed for when they recieve it?  Then you don't have to worry about it getting lost?  Although, I will say, I wouldn't worry about the Ark stealing your money (I think that's what you were worried about?)  The founders of the ark are members of this board, and I've met them several times.  Nice ladies, and trustworthy as well.  It's where I get my rat supplies from, and I like knowing that the money I spend goes directly back into the rats they care for.  Smiley

Oh, no, no, I'm not worried about them stealing it Smiley. It's the post office, they always seem to "lose" them, and they can't tell me where the Money Orders went o_0.

EDIT: Oh yes, I'm wondering if I should add some kind of "rat mix" to the lab blocks? To make it more interesting ^^.

Call the feed stores, they might stock it already.  Mine stocks Purina Labdiet lab blocks, which are ok in a pinch, but I usually try to feed Harlan 2018.

Some fresh fruits or veggies is okay to add every day.  If you are making up another mix then I am an advocat of using it as a 'treat' a couple times a week.  Everyday is unneccessary and fattening IMO -- although yes some people do it.

I've had several money orders get lost. I won't use them anymore.

Rather than using blocks, I'm feeding my rats the Ducommon molasses mix with the fruits, veggies, beans, and oysters/liver. Has anyone else done the Ducommon diet exactly as it's written? The reason I'm doing it is because they don't seem to like lab blocks at all.

Do they need something to wear their teeth down? I give mine wood sticks.

I would also go for the Oxbow Regal Rat or the Harlan Teklad Lab Blocks.
I used to feed Harlan Teklad but the supply store I got it from was simply disgusting and my rats were more prone to get fat on it.
So the Oxbow works out well.

You can also feed in addition to lab blocks or as the only dry kibble along with a fresh veggie/fruit diet is proper dog food, either senior or lite formulas. I have a large list some where of good foods for this if you would like.

I'm currently feeding Oxbow Regal Rat with California Natural Chicken & Rice dog food 24/7, along side fresh foods.

Cheers!

I've read on a few rat sites that fuits and veggies should be given twice a week? Is that okay?

Um, this may sound silly, but what's the diffrence between a feed store and a pet store? ^^;

Feed stores are more geared toward farmers and pet stores for pet owners, but there is some overlap. They both carry different kinds of animal food. I worked in a feed store once that had a pet store in the back.

Feed stores also tend to stock larger bulk quantities of pet foods and tend to sell it cheaper than pet stores.  They sell by the lb out of bulk bags rather than the smaller pre-packaged and more expensive pet food sold in pet stores.

Well, in that case tomorrow I'm going to look for some feed stores Smiley. That would be my best choice anyway, as the bus fair to the nearest PetSmart is horrible (I feel sorry for the people who live there, LOL).

I tried Debbies Mix and they hated it.  Wouldn't touch it after the first two days.  I now do a dry mix and fresh fruits and veggies.

And to whoever asked about vegetables twice a week, my advice is to give them daily.  I personally believe that fresh foods are essential to a rats health.  Lab blocks are good if you want an easy convienient form of a balanced diet but if you read the ingredients you are basically feeding them a staple of @ 4 ingredients plus vitamins and minerals.  Personally, as omnivores, I think they need much more variety than that.  So if you do the blocks definitly supplement daily with fresh foods.

Fortunately, my four girls all love the Ducommon mix. I'm still learning which fruits and veggies they like best. They won't touch prunes. I guess I'll have to eat the rest of the prunes! I'll try plums next. But I give them the actual mix in the evening and by morning they've eaten almost all of it. I give them the fruit, veggie, meat, bean part of the diet in the morning.

Ah, okay ^^. I hope the stupid fridge doesn't go off again *mumbles about lazy landlords*. Just one more thing, veggies & fruits every day won't cause diarrhea, will they?
