Rattie slave and lovin every minute of it!

« Reply #30 on: August 23, 2006, 10:26:33 AM »

I'm puddling up.  I've never heard eepers eeping before.  Thank you for letting me have that experience.

I'm sad that the numbers keep changing, but if Bronny took care of one, she did a dang good job if there are no signs or evidence and that's something to be thankful for, sorta.  Much rather that than finding the horror I did when my hamster had her first litter.  A year later and I still have bad dreams about that.

If they're in wire cage, check the floor.  One morning I got up to find a tiny 'hamlet' 4 feet away from the cage in the floor which was on the dining table.  FuzzyButt had made the bedding nest so high that the baby crawled up and right out, or was smooshed/pushed out of those tiny bars.  Amazingly, it was still alive and she accepted the frozen bean back.

Now, we need pics of  Bronwyn, too ya know.

And where is our man Dilbert?HuhHuhHuh??  You're slacking, Shelagh.  No rest for the weary, ya know.   Yellow Cute Laugh

To sex them...  Another trick along with checking the space between genitals...  Check for nipples.  Only the girls will have them.  They're very faint at this age, but you should be able to see a row on either side of their belly.  They are easier to see right before their fur comes in too.

With the colors, it's hard to tell a berkshire from a self right now, since the belly color doesn't come in as soon as the "top" color.  The ones that are completely dark could be self or berk at this point.  One tip to try and tell the difference, check their paws.  Berks will have white feet, while a self will have dark feet.  The one you thought was berk, looks hooded to me.  If you look closely, you can see the colored head, and a stripe going down the back.

The pink on the little girl's nose is probably bruising.  When rats give birth they pull the babies out with their mouths.  Some of Bella's babies had a little bruising on the back of their necks but it went away within a week.  I don't think it's anything to worry about.  An easy way to sex babies is by the size of the "bump" they have.  Boys have a much larger bump than girls.  What I did was take 1 baby out at a time.  I would look at the size of the bump that the baby had.  Then I would take out the next one.  If that one looked the same as the first baby I would put it next to it.  If it looked different I would put it in a different spot.  I did this with all of the babies and then I counted how many were in each pile.  I sexed mine on day 2 with that method and got them all right.

The babies are so cute!!  Good luck with sexing!  Ratty Smiley

Hmmm good tips...thanks.
The self (I know could be a berk but at 2 days old I can't tell) really is a uniform colour on the top...very different from the hoodies, but time will tell.  This is just plain fun to try to guess.   Yellow Cute Laugh

Robin

They are in those small Superpet cages so have a nice deep plastic base.  She shoved aside all the carefresh and they are on the plastic bottom with a layer of papertowel over them.
Umm I am planning on putting her and the family into an R-680.  When would the babies be okay to go into one of those?  What age? I was hoping for a week and a half?

Maybe I can't count anymore...its definitely possible, there's been so much going on with Pippens loss, one of my older females going to have to get sub-q injections  *shudder*, etc.

Pics of Bronwen soon, since tomorrow I will be quicker with the baby count and I can spend a bit more time with her.  I stroke her in her cage a lot which she loves, she prefers her right cheek best.   Heart

Ahhh Dillyman.  I have tried to make bouncy videos of him, but they all came out extremely dark.  The one day I could do it during the day it was dark outside which made it useless.  I will try again today for you...right now in fact.  Cheesy

*melts* Ohhhh!!!! They're so sweet and cute!! Lil tiny nonfuzzbutts!!

That last picture of Bronwen just killed me. For some reason her expression registered as "They can't have them! They're mine!"  It was hilarious in my head, I assure you. Lots of lovin for momma and babies. I might need to check out the going overnight rates to Canada, send you guys some zucchini bread.

Oh, and Mac wishes to pass along that the eeping babies freak her right on out. She woke up from a dead sleep in the hammock to come bounding toward the cage door. She stood there looking around before she focused on the computer and me, then just sort of stared. I'm a bad, evil mommy and played it several times, and each time she heard this one particularly loud eep she'd start climbing the bars. Poor baby! She better not be making any plans to have any of her own....

FELIX
Gender: Masculine

Usage: English, German, Romanian, Ancient Roman, Biblical

Pronounced: FEE-liks   [key]

From a Roman cognomen meaning "lucky, successful" in Latin. This was the name of many early saints and four popes. Another notable bearer was the 19th-century German composer Felix Mendelsohnn.

Luckily for you guys, you should be able to tell if you have pews before their fur comes in.  Smiley  Anybody that has "no" eyes (IE, you can't see them through the lids like the black eyed kiddos) and a light body is more than likely a pew.  Even without their fur in yet, you can generally get a good idea of their color by the color of their skin.  It looks like you've got pews and black ones to me.

From this pic I took this evening (their "colour" has darkened even more) I see 3 mismarked hoodies, 4 selfs/berks, and 6 PEW's...does this seem right?  So most likely PEWs, Blacks and Black Hoodies?

Oh and I had to include this one for the little one on the bottom complaining about being woken up...heehee  Grin

Once their colour or non-colour comes in and I have sexed them properly then I will figure out a way to mark Your Babies so you can watch them grow.   Grin

If you breed black to PEW, I think you get agouti.  Having a PEW gives you little to no clues to what you'll end up with, it's a complete crapshoot unless you know the pedigree.  Not all PEW's are true albinos, in fact I think very few are.  I think Bronny could actually be a black hoodie or an agouti berk or..., hiding behind the dilutions.  Just has too many modifiers/dilutions to "show".  Rat genetics fascinates the poop out of me, but I admit, I'm not even good enough to call myself an amateur.  But I'm gonna toss out a guess that the selfs will be agoutis, at least some of them.   Can I say "I think" or "some" any more?  LOL  Maybe silver fawns or fawns (pink eyes), too.

I can't wait to see what this litter shows.  I love guessing at this kind of stuff.

why do rat noses fit so perfectly in your ears...

in the first pic it looks like one of them is trying to be a seal. or a manatee.

i bet they are soooooo warm to hold in your hands. and they go so quickly from fitting in one hand to fitting in two, to barely able to hold all of them in your arms. not like they would stay put at that point.

love the purple tray. it brings out their ... skin? gentle kisses all around and scritches for bronwen.

It's possible they could be agouti (or another color even), but I think the pigment is too dark.  I could be wrong though, I'm trying to remember the difference between how dark the agouti and the black were in a foster litter of mie I raised (I had a litter of foster rats, but they were all black, so nothing to compare to).

Breeding a PEW is a complete crapshoot, like you said.  For all we know, she could be a blue berkshire hidden under all those genes, she could be an agouti self, she could be anything...  You just don't know because the genes that "cause" a pew will hide any markings or coloration that she would otherwise display.  Therefore, breeding a black rat to a PEW rat wouldn't neccesarily cause an agouti (if I remember right anyway...  I'm not completely positive how the pew genetics work).  If she carried the genes of a black rat, the litter could be all black.  If she carried agouti genes however, they would be agouti, since that is dominant over black.

Anyway...  Enough rambling for now.  Smiley   CUTE babies, btw!
