Im so happy! i took miakoda to the vet today(Kari tag-ed along too) cause i thought she might have mites cause of her excessive itching and scabbing round the neck. Ick. Well though kari was there for moral support the doc checked them both over (since there housed togther) and ruled out bugs. He said asked lots of questions and said since Koda is the only one upset that it might be allergies(food or bedding) excessive power grooming or skin promblems.. i know kari is allergic to pine, but i though aspen would be safe which there on. He said it could be the aspen and recomonded i but them on towels/blakets for two weeks to see if it clears up, then if i want to consider bedding try carefreash. He asked if they were litterbox trained, i laughed but he said he knew a few owners that litterbox trained their rats. so Koda's on Baytrail twice a day and Dex. Sod. Phos once a day (for two weeks).  Kari decided to explore the mans pockets like a naugghty thing (he let her crawl up his sleeve ) she found and ran off behind the computer with a glove. then mangaged to tip over the dog treat dish and and got a puppy biscut, which koda faught her for. Kari wet herself.

what a day for an adventure. I didnt help i had to go by public trans people love koda but one guy asked 'if i cut there tails off would they die'
i hope not -i said

Sounds like you've got a rat-loving vet!

If the antibiotics don't seem to do anything though, I'd recommend treating for bugs with Revolution or something just in case.  My girl Flow was the only one affected out of my six and had two negative skin scrapings, so we assumed that bugs were unlikely. We tried ABs to no avail and then I decided to treat with Revolution just in case, as mites would be the easiest thing to get rid of out of all our options. Lo and behold, she started clearing up within days. I couldn't believe that it was mites after I was sure it had to be something else.

I had a similar experience about a year ago.  One of my girls, and only one had scabs.  We went to the vets twice and both skin scrapings were negative.  Then the last trip just before we did bloodwork the vet looked at the slide a few seconds longer and there it was... a fur mite!  It looks absolutely beastly on the slide! Revolution cleared it up in a few days.  If I remember correctly they were all given 2 drops between the shoulderblades, for 3 times 2 weeks apart.
