24x16x12 Cage- can any rats use??

I picked up a nice little cage at a yard sale today, for $1 (including a purple hamster igloo!)!! My intention was to donate it, but after using the cage calculator I'm not sure any rat rescues would be able to use it. The dimensions are in the subject, which equals out to fitting 1.3 rats. It's three stories (2 feet tall), with a purple metal pan and white powdercoated wire (with the smallest bar spacing). Is it possible a rescue could use this for babies or something?

My second choice is a hamster (or mouse, I guess!) rescue, so either way it all works out. Now to fight the temptation to FILL it!  I'm asking in general instead of a specific rescue because I'm not sure if I'll be down in the area of my local rescues any time soon. So I wanted to see what my best bet was before asking specific rescues.

A rat rescue might be able to use it as a hospital cage or QT cage or even a transport cage.  It obviously won't work for any type of permanent use but could be used in many other ways.  Or like you said a mouse rescue might be able to use it.

I don't think it would work as a hospital or travel cage because of the levels, so maybe a quarantine cage. I was thinking about that while I was typing. Since it only fits one rat I instantly thought hospital or quarantine, but...

A couple of gerbils might be ok in it.  Or mice.

Gerbils are illegal here. After thinking about it more, I'm considering keeping it and fostering a hamster. Only thing I'm wondering is if I could order a different color pan for it, to match my boy's cage and my room. It actually has the address of the place it was purchased on the cage tag, so I intend to go investigate sometime soon. Thanks for your suggestions! A hamster or mouse rescue will be my second choice for sure!

While not big enough for rats to spend long periods of time in, we use that size cage to take rats to adoption events. We always tell people that it's not big enough for them to live in. We also us them to house syrian hamsters.

Sounds like that cage is the same that's sold at Petsmart for $40 new. I actually have two of those cages, and use them for small litters and moms sometimes. They do make good transport cages or temp cages for young rats, but adult rats - especially males - would have a hard time getting around in those cages.

I have used those cages for adult mice before, and they work really well. They have about the same floor space as a 20gal tank, so they're perfect for a couple of female mice.
