I am sooos stupid.  My rattie Kahlua opened up her wound again and I put some superglue to close it up and it dribbled down over her......where she pees.....is that females peeing organ, the one that looks like they have a little penis?  Embarrassed
I think it is covering her pee hole.  Sad  I haven't any acetone and I'm scared it has gone up her pee hole.

I don't know what kind of superglue you were using.. If it was regular craft superglue, you need to get her to the vet as soon as humanly possible. I know that it can cause irritation and a mild burning sensation. I believe it can be somewhat toxic as well.. Since you don't have acetone, the only other way I know how to get it off is with warm, soapy water. I don't know if her incision can get wet, though.. Anyhow, you soak the area in warm, soapy water and roll the skin back and forth gently, until the adhesive starts to get brittle and flakes off.

Oh, and the glue they use to close incisions and such is different from regular Super Glue. I used to have some stuff called Dermabond at one grooming shop I worked at.. Something calling Liquid Bandaid might work for you, too. It's basically the same thing, except it's in a liquid instead of gel form.

Well it is 10 47pm here in australia.  I've taken Kahlua to the emergancy vet.  It will cost probably over 300$. But they will try and get it off for me.  They say if they cannot.........she will have to be put down and they are hoping it isn't inside.  Sad  I'm sooooooooooo stupid.  I pray and I am so not religious.  I hope she goes ok. I've got to go back at 630 700am tomorrow so in 9 hours.  I hope they can help her.  I cannot stop crying.  I don't want to lose her.  I only just met her beautiful soul. Cry

I'm so sorry TNS to hear of this mishap, don't be too hard on yourself, you were only doing what you could to help her and ratties at the best of times can be wiggle worms, hopefully the vets can help, won't they ring you if needed before you collect her in the morning?  Try to get some rest tonight, I'm sending lots and lots of *good wishes* and *healing vibes* to your little Kahlua and *hugs* to you.

Let us know how you get on  Smiley

Well they got it off and she is weeing!  THANKGOD!  I had nightmares last night and well I really was dreading bad news.  I knew I would have been more than a mess if we had to put her to sleep.  I kissed her soooooooo many times when I saw her. They suggested the only thing we haven't thought of with Kahluas wound is leaving it alone.  Completely.  Cover it with nothing and let it just heal......but is is sort of opened a bit.  The skin is, but the muscle under it is all intact.  So how can I keep it from getting infected?

Heaving *huge* sighs of relief for you and Kahlua!  So glad she's home and doing better!

I'm still relatively new here and don't remember where Kahlua's wound is, but if it's not where she can easily reach to lick it, could you just put neosporin on it?

Did they not send her home with antibiotics after surgery after her spay?  I thought a course of Baytril was always given post surgery because it's a good general ab.  If she's not, bout the only thing you can really do is keep her on very clean bedding &  hammocks and wipe the cage surfaces down.

I am SO RELIEVED they got it off.  Said lots of prayers for this little troublemaker.

Ok Firstly thank you soooooooooooooooooo much for the thoughts.  She is ok, I think a little sore because the had a lot of tummy fur ripped off and it is really red.  Poor mite.  I wonder if I can put aloe vera gel on her belly but not on the wound.  Just wondering if we leave it, will it close up, I mean the both sides of skin aren't being held together so I wonder?  I remember i had to get my boyfriend to call the vet because I was too scared to.  My heart was racing I could feel it while he was talking to the vet.  But when he put his thumb up I think I nearly turned to goo.
I kissed her heaps when i saw her!  She is such a spritey thing. I love that.  My big boys are just lazing around like myself all the time LOL.  Kahlua is more like my boyfriend.  Always moving around.   She is on 1 ml of baytril every 24 hours.  But I thought maybe it is better to but her on half of that every 12 hours. Or is their no difference?

My girl's spay incisions and Dilbert's incision from his neuter opened a bit but to muscle, so it was fine.  they move around so much it opens a bit naturally.  I would leave your poor girl alone and let her heal.  If they didn't send you home with abs, then do as DolciLady says, clean cage, soft bedding (my kids go on fleece until they are healed) and you could put a bit of polysporin on it like you would any other cut, and then just keep an eye on it.

1 ml of Baytril?  Are you sure it's not .01ml???  My rattie syringe only holds 1/2 cc (.5ml), I believe.  I think once (.01 more likely) every 24hrs would be ok since it's being used as a prophylactic and not treatment.  Did they give her anything for pain or inflammation after they removed the glue?  I'm too chicken to put stuff on my rats that I have no experience with.  I'd probably hold an ice pack on her belly for a couple minutes if nothing else.  Or tie my hands behind my back and try to leave it alone.  Of course that's the hardest thing to do since as mommies, we want to fix the booboo.

Now Kahlua, do you not realize that the sooner you heal, the sooner you can go play with the sexy boys?  hehe

LOL I think it is 0.01ml.  It is a really thin small syringe and it has numbers 0.1, 0.2 all the way up to 1.0. the numbers are hal a centimetre apart. on it and I give them 0.1.  Every 24 hours. Maybe it is too much? Also she is sneezing constantly but no mucus so I thought maybe I should up to 0.1 every 12 hours? Cause now my old Jett man is sneezing!  Yeah it is hard not to try and help her heal.  My boyfriend keeps telling me to leave it alone but I just want to help her more!  Her tummy is still red raw.  Poor baby. It is starting to heal though!  YAY!  I just checked her now.....it is 7 30 am here in Aus.  I just want her better.  Being a mummy is sooo hard sometimes!

LOL Robin..........yeah my boys love her but she doesn't think much of them LOL.  They have had a little intro and she squeaks at them.

I would recommend sticking with what the vet prescribed. According to the manufacturer, Bayer, baytril can be administered every 24 hours. That's generally how I give it (except to my very sickest rats) and it works very well. She should heal up very quickly. I've had boys that have managed to get abscesses on their bellies (older guys who got their bellies abraded trying to walk across something rough) and they all healed up, even with dime and nickel sized holes in their skin.

I'm so glad to hear Kahlua is OK, I would agree with your vet, just leave her be, to heal, keep up the meds and keep her cage clean and fresh and in no time, she'll be right.  Grin

Hello! Hope your girl is getting better. I'm new to ratties still (2.5 months!) but I know when my cat had tom cat bites that turned into abcesses they healed fine. They were huge, infected and had to be surgically drained leaving 4 massive open holes exposing muscle. He healed fine and isnt showing his 9 yrs at all so I'm hoping your Kahlua (great name btw) will be ok with this one clean wound. I know it's hard to look at the wound and see the muscle, but at least you can see it's clean this way. Guess it all takes a strong stomach, but owning a rat always does!

I also had my gall bladder out last year despite being small enough to fit in my rattie cage and one wound opened (I think thanks to the cat jumping onto my upturned belly in the night) and I could see my own muscle... gross I know but it was closed within a day without me doing anything to it but those wipes the dr gave me to dry it out(Huh I think)... I was just told to keep the area dry and uncovered... so maybe make sure lint from the fleece doesnt get in there and if she does lick it dont panic... it's natural as long as she doesnt make things worse.

All in all I am scarred, but the cat isnt despite his 4 wounds being 4 times bigger than my 4, which are fading. Wish I had nice glossy rat fur to cover them Sad (I meant as fur, not as a coat Wink)

Best wishes! And yes arent males just lovely girly movie watching buddies... just lazing there getting petted.
