I'm sitting here, looking at the cookie cooling rack that my laptop sits on (too keep it cool  Tongue) and I started thinking there must be a possibility for using something like this to create a level in the rat cage.  It's sturdy black metal, guessing powder-coated.  This one looks to be about 11 x 18 and the spacing looks about 3/8-inch by 3/8 inch.  Is that spacing too narrow?  The challenge becomes how to attach it in the cage to test out the theory.  The cage is 20.5 inches front to back, the rack is just under 18.  But I'd probably buy a different rack for this -- the laptop is sitting on a pampered chef cooling rack and I know there are less expensive ones out there.

Any thoughts?

*is now eye-ing her own cooling rack*  Hmm....

You know, that might be an interesting idea.  As long as it isn't galvanized and the spaces aren't too large or are covered with something, I don't see why that couldn't work.  You could probably use c-clamps or zip ties to hold it on.  Or, even, hang it from the level above it with yarn to make a "floating" level.  I've done that with wooden trivets before.  They only lasted about a week (stinky wood goes bye-bye), but the metal one might work longer.

Hmm that does sound like a good idea!  I also saw someone on here that used metal/wire plastic coated pen and pencil holders from staples to add little resting spots.  I want to say it may have been Siana that had them???  Maybe not.....but those cooling racks are a neat idea too.  Plus if you use some type of covering on them, then they won't get their feet caught.
