"Who need kids when you have rats?"

« on: November 02, 2006, 06:31:16 AM »

last night Lycan was fine. She climbed all over me. This morning I woke up and no greeting from her. I went to her and she was half way in her cardboard tube. I picked her up and she barely moved. I put her on the 2nd level and she walked real slow back down to the bottom and back in the tube.  She was breathing real hard and fast. Wouldn't eat not even her treats. I looked her over and no blood or marks and her mouth and teeth are fine. I have been in tears all morning.  Is she dying?   Cry

If she is alive when hubby gets home should he separate Lycan from Selene?
I just talked to him and he said there is no money this week for a vet visit, if it would have been next week we could take her. I don't know how I am going to work all day in tears worrying about her.   She is so young her adult fur is just starting to come in.   Puppy Dog Eyes:

Honestly, sounds like you need to get to the the vet today.  Most vets will set up a payment plan type of thing in these situations.

the few vets in the area that deal with rats don't make payment plans. And most of the ones that don't see rats won't do payment plans. I had 2 sick cats last year and i had to pay he whole bill right out.
What does it sound like?

Lethargy?  Have you listened to her lungs?  Pick her up and put her side to your ear (both sides) like a phone (we call it rat phone)..listen for squeaks, gurgles, rattles anything other than the whoosh of air in and out.  Is there any porphyrn?  Is she weak when she walks or really wobbly and unbalanced?  Is she hunched up and her fur puffed out or scruffy looking?  Does she have laboured breathing...are her flanks heaving in and out, or is she gasping with her mouth open?

Lungs are fine I listened this morning, she is finishing up meds for a URI.  hunched up and puffy fur, that's what caught my attention almost looked like she wasn't cleaning herself. Not gasping just her sides when breathing move very fast and like heaving. No porphyrn either.

She's on baytril/doxy?  How long now?  How much improvement was there on the meds?

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. Sad

I really hope Lycan can hang in there for you.  I know how hard it is to watch and feel helpless to do anything.

Your description sounds a little atypical but its possible the infection reached Lycan's lungs and turned into pneumonia.  (Although usually you can hear that.)

Also, with the help of this forum one of my girls was diagnosed with most likely having a heart problem.  We did Baytril/Doxy and it didn't help anything.  Her sides were still heaving.  I don't know what the chances of a  baby having a heart problem is though (as I am not a vet).

baytril .5mg, Doxy .2 and another med that I don't have with me that starts with an "Me"
It's to dry up the congestion. They get .8 of that one.  This Saturday will be 3 weeks of meds.  There was great improvement, they haven't sneezed at all for about a week now, and they also haven't been congested in there nose.

Is it methylxanthine?
Do you have enough meds to continue past the 3 weeks until you can get to the vet next week?  It might be holding something in check and if you stop it could be a problem.

I am honestly not sure, but its strange how the meds aren't working when they were.  Meloxicam is metacam but that is for inflammation and pain relief, this Me drug is bugging me, can you tell? ...it does sound like pneumonia.  Could she have aspirated her food or medication?

When hubby gets home I can have him tell me and i can let you know. How could she go from fine to Pneumonia overnight. Wouldn't Selene have it as well?  She was her bad self this morning.   Her lungs are fine and clear. Only the no appetite and hunching and rapid breathing are the only signs that fit her from the Pneumonia site.

Kerfuffle is my heart rat!

« Reply #13 on: November 02, 2006, 08:48:49 AM »

My second girl, Twosocks, was very ill when I got her.  She was sneezing and wheezing and snortling to no end.  She was put on a round of Baytril for 7 days, and she seemed hyper, playful, and active as could be after the first day or two.  However, on the 7th night, she became lethargic.  The next morning, I lost her.  I still don't understand how that could have happened after all her bouncing around  Huh

I hope you can get your Lycan to the vet.  I hope the vet will work with you on the payment.  It's so heart breaking knowing something can be done when you can't afford it Sad

Another note, when Twosocks was ill, she was housed with my other girl, Ratty.  Ratty never caught whatever it was.

I don't expect her to make it through the day. I hate to think that way, but i would rather prepare myself for the call. Rather then get excied and the worst happens.

Awwww...L&Smom.  Sad  That bad?
Meloxicam (metacam) is a painkiller with anti-inflammatory effects.  I don't think it dries up fluid in the lungs.
Poor sweet Lycan.  Is she drinking or is she dehydrated?  Do you know how to tell?

For dehydration, take your Lycan, pull up the skin tight on the back of her neck and let go...if it smoothly and quickly goes back into place she is fine, but if its slow then she's dehydrated and you might need to syringe fluids into her.  If you aren't sure whats normal or not, do the same thing to healthy Selene and compare.

She may just want to be cuddled and not run around.  She also may not feel well enough for an Out time and want to be left alone.  Watch her body language carefully.

When I picked her up this morning she didn't care as she usually would. She did try and chew on my buttons, but mainly just sat in my hands. . My maintenance man friend is going to check on her in a few. I will let all know if she is still with us.   When i get home i am going to give her water and see if she will eat some baby food. I just want to go home and be with her. I don't want her to pass alone if that is going to happen.

My friend went and checked on her and he said she is sitting in her wheel breathing real fast. By now she would be tucked away in her tunnel fast asleep until the sun goes down.

Well i called her vet and she said since it came on all of a sudden and she was fine (URI) that is isn't related to what they were sick with before. And she has no idea what it would be without seeing her. Again no money. My Mom said I gave her a good life. She came to me sick and her other cagemates were sick as well and I'm sure put to sleep. I just feel like a big piece of s*it.

If she does go my Mom found on the net a rat adoption place. She found 2 rats with an adoption fee of $10. So I will rescue rats in need if I have too.

I'm just so damn sad.  Cry Cry

Oh dear I didn't realize she came from a whole litter of sick rats...sounds like it could be bad genetics.  Sad I am soo sorry.
This is why rats should only be bred by responsible breeders...sigh.   Undecided

Sadly I have to ask if you have enough money to have her pts so she doesn't suffer?
