What do you mix your Baytril with to get your ratties to take their meds?

Just curious.
We have an abundance of turkey and chicken baby food around the house for newborn kittens, so I was thinking about using that to mix up Kerfuffle's medicine. This is assuming he will eat babyfood on its own without the meds first.
I gave my boy his first dose of the stuff, and I have NEVER seen a rat drag its chin along the ground to dispose of a bad taste... until I watched Kerfuffle lose more than half of his Baytril dose this way. Ugh! I put the last drops on a piece of Oxbow Regal Rat... he ate it right up. I don't want to make him reject his staple food, though.
So! What do your ratties like taking their meds with?
I wish all rattie medicine was flavored like custard like the Albon Suspension

A company here by the name of Purity makes flavored syrup. It's not the healthiest thing but a surefire way to have the ratties sucking at the syringe.

Do you mix it and suck it up in the syringe or just dip the syringe in it?

Ha! I have a list..
I have tried just about everything..
I've tried pear, papaya, peach cobbler, turkey, apricot [with pear and apple], applesauce, sweet potato, apple oatmeal, and apple rice ceral baby foods. I've tried blackberry, cherry, apricot, and raspberry jelly. We did PB thinned out with honey, and the afore mentioned jellies. I tried honey by itself, and honey with butter. Tried coffee once, because they just love it so.. Tried thinned out garlic/chive mashed potatoes and the soup part of my chili..
I've tried it on a piece of buttered toast, and they ate that one time.. They thoroughly inspect every piece of toast now..
I generally suck up the meds into the syringe, and then get the 'mix' in there as well. Proceed to shake and curse the syringe trying to mix everything up. Cold Baytril and cold jelly don't mix very well, heh!
I hope your Kerfuffle isn't half as picky as my girls.

Obviously, don't use this every time (too fatty), but this is my old standby to really get that emergency or first few doses in----

Pear banana baby food and mixed grain gerber baby cereal. The banana and pear covered up the taste pretty well and when it seemed that was all he would eat I made it dinner by adding the cereal and nutrical. When I used Tylan pig injection syrum which is absolutely nasty he took it this way and didnt bat an eye.
I was afraid to feed it cold so I warmed it up 5 seconds in the micro tested that it wasnt too hot on my wrist then mixed in the baytril with a toothpick.
Then I put it in a tiny 2 oz. glass bowl that you put spices in when cooking and put it in his cage it may have taken a few min to finish but he always at it all.

Cool whip with a drop of organic agave syrup?
This question is coming up quite often. Baytril IS absolutely disgusting. I don't blame the ratties. I also tried millions of things but my girls could still smell and taste it. The only way my girls took it was the tablet version of Baytril mixed with water (I got the right dosage from the vet of course). I put it in chicken with gravy baby food or cool whip. It's pretty much tasteless and you can't smell it. I think Suebee does the same thing. Hers is liver flavored and her rats love it.

I was a little afraid of trying the tablets this last round, since I had images of me using too much of a tablet, or not able to break it up in the right way.. Just random terrifying fears of my own clumsiness and silliness. But I know several people who swear by them, and how the rats always take it. I'm going to try it the next time they need it. The *very* cheap price of the pills vs. the liquid doesn't hurt too much, either.
I'm just praying I can get them through the next week and a half of the Baytril. I'm running out of options, but I'm going to try the pancake syrup here in a second. Tully [my 'No-Handle' baby] still hasn't had her Baytril and we're running on two hours late now.
They *love* the doxy, which I've heard is supposed to be nasty. I don't even have to mix anything with it most days. I have odd little ratties..

My no handle rattie I had to use leather work gloves it was a last resort and he actually didnt associate them with me so they never got bit, he did take chunks out of the syringe though.

I can't force feed her meds if she decides she doesn't want to take them, is what I was speaking of. She can't swallow them if she's screaming and thrashing about like I was trying to murder her. I use gloves whenever I work with her, though, and she's getting alot better every day.

Well, I would never mix the meds myself. The vet figured out how much of the tablet (which was a tiny amount) to give and she mixed it with water. So in the end it was liquid but as I said tasteless and no yucky smell.

Lucky. Most of my rats drink the strawberry flavoured baytril.... But the doxy they will fight all the fight they have left in them to not take it. Luckily it is usually smaller doses.
Funny how our creatures are.

So I tried sucking up some maple syrup into the syringe with the Baytril. Kerfuffle was very interesting in the syrup, but not the syringe. Picky boy.
So then, I didn't want to give him an abundance of syrup, so I mixed the syringe contents into a little puddle of turkey baby food (shh, don't tell mom's kittens!). He loved it. However, I think I made the puddle too big in my efforts to conceal the medicine, so it took 30+ minutes of coercing him into eating every last bit. I ended up giving the last bits to him on my fingertip. I'm off to the store in a bit to see about getting some variety in flavors so he doesn't catch on. Hehe...
I guess my boy just hates the syringes. The vet even had a hard time getting him to take the Ivomec orally!
I'm still interested in others' ideas! It's amusing to see how hard we have to try to trick our ratties!

Oh! Okay! I thought you had to break the pill up at home. Well, maybe you do, but your vet does it for you. I'll have to ask my vet about that.. Hmm..
Ratlets:
Try offering him some of the good stuff without the meds in the syringe. Any of the stuff mentioned here would be fine, although you may have to let him taste it on your finger before hand, so he knows he likes the stuff. I used a small amount [maybe 2cc] of a honey butter mixture. They all readily eat from the syringe now.

I just had to add this..
I tried the Nutri-Stat that... someone recommended a while back. Sorry, but I can't remember who it was, heh! Anyhow, I offered the icky Baytril on a spoon mixed with a small glob of that, and all three girls gobbled it right up! No fuss whatsoever, and my two littles even fought over the spoon! I'm ecstatic right now. This is the first dose in a while that we haven't had to fight over the meds. Yay!!!

The Baytril I get is a liver-flavored tablet, which I crush and mix with nothing more than simple syrup. You would think I was distributing CANDY!
Seriously, ask your vet for liver-flavored tabs for dogs... crush them with a mortar & pestle, and mix with 3mL of Simple Syrup (or 6 mL, depending on the size of the tablet... there are two sizes). I have never given meds with such ease! Kirk tries to STEAL the syringe from me.

When my girls had Baytril it was HOT pink. Wasn't sure what the vet put in it. They drank it by themselves from the syringe. Then they got better and smarter. I mixed it in baby food, lasted 3 days then they would turn there noses up and I would waste that dose of medicine. So I had to force the meds in my girls twice a day. They hated it but I made sure they got what they needed. If forcing is the way to go, have a treat handy, something they love so when they take the meds the next thing they get is the yummy treat. All was forgiven after that.

Banana is the key! we tried absolutely 'everything' to get our babies to take their baytril... baby food, cream, custard etc, and the only thing that works every time, without fail is banana. just a small slice, mashed up with the back of a small spoon and the baytril added and mixed in. the boys love it so much that they both have to get banana, even if only one is having meds! ha ha!
