I have always been discouraged from getting a boy rat due to the fact of there hoodles coming off the back of them. i noticed that lots of people have boy rats, sometimes it seems more then girls.
If a boy gets nutered will his hoodles shrink?  I have never had a boy and I was just curious.

I actually miss my big boy's manbits.

It never bothered me to begin with, and now a days I don't even notice them until some one asks:
"what is that growth under his tail?" 
as if they were tumors
"What that?" I reply turning the rat on to his back... "Well, those are his.... you know..."
"OMG!"

Every rat is an individual but generally speaking boys are considered calmer than girls not the other way around. 

Girls take much longer to calm down.  My year and a half year old still acts like she is 3 months old most of the time.  She doesn't know how to stay still if her life depended on it.  My girls are also much much much more destructive chewers and like to destroy stuff while free ranging whereas my boys are much more mellow outside the cage.

I got my boys neutered and after the swelling went away you can't tell that they had testicles.  However before they were neutered, their testicles were just apart of the rat.   I think ratty personalities make up for the balls. haha

Crazy is right. For once I wish Selene would just sit with me not use me for a jungle gym...lol  And stash enjoys playing with the cat more then me.

Ace is neutered and his skin eventually shrank up.

I think we got a girly man....he is just as active as the girls and he chews EVERYTHING to shreds no matter what it is.  He is far more destructive than 2 of our girls combined! He is totally opposite of how most people describe their boys.  He is chewing things the girls never touched (all 4 that we have had).  He's nervous too.  I say Skiddish but my daughter says he's sensitive.  Again..Girly Man.

 

You know, the four boys I neutered turned girly after about a couple of months...maybe because the lack of testosterone...they even started to save and hide their food and make a big nesting mess in their cage.

I agree with susschen22, if I had a choice I would spay my girls...because estrogen is the freaking enemy! Plus you grow to love the goolies, I promise.

Good lord... That's definitely way too pricey.  Spays don't even cost that much usually!  Neuters are more commonly around $50-$120. 

Thanks, I knew it seemed too high.  I'll keep looking in my area for a vet that will do it.

I asked my vet just for the info, and they told me $135.  I thought that was kind of high.

3 out of the 4 exotics vets here charge approximately $200 for a neuter, which is also including a pre-op exam.

Luckily there is one vet here who I went to that only charges $105. 

I don't think $200 is outrageous if there are not a lot of exotics vets in an area and rat surgeries are not common.

Anything more than that though, is pretty insane I will agree.

Really lucky. I even looked at your profile to see if you are near us. I was quoted a few dollars shy of $200 for neuter by our vet.

Where are you located MeganH?  Lise and I are from Canada so you are also dealing with Canadian Funds...no jokes please.
