Boys and nutering

I have always been discouraged from getting a boy rat due to the fact of there hoodles coming off the back of them. i noticed that lots of people have boy rats, sometimes it seems more then girls.
If a boy gets nutered will his hoodles shrink? I have never had a boy and I was just curious.

Thunder had absolutely no testicles right after his neuter--no swelling, loose skin or anything. He looks just like a broader girl.
Pabu looked like he had half of his testicles still after he was neutered, but withing the next few weeks the swelling went down and the skin shrunk up. Now he's got "residual" testicles that are a bit smaller than Dilbert's.
I used to be really freaked out about rats' testicles and I hated when they'd drag across my hand or something, but I got used to them pretty quick. Now I can't imagine that something so minor held my back from getting wonderful boyrats earlier!

It never bothered me to begin with, and now a days I don't even notice them until some one asks:
"what is that growth under his tail?"
as if they were tumors
"What that?" I reply turning the rat on to his back... "Well, those are his.... you know..."
"OMG!"

Every rat is an individual but generally speaking boys are considered calmer than girls not the other way around.
Girls take much longer to calm down. My year and a half year old still acts like she is 3 months old most of the time. She doesn't know how to stay still if her life depended on it. My girls are also much much much more destructive chewers and like to destroy stuff while free ranging whereas my boys are much more mellow outside the cage.
I got my boys neutered and after the swelling went away you can't tell that they had testicles. However before they were neutered, their testicles were just apart of the rat.
I think ratty personalities make up for the balls. haha

Girls are absolutly psycho! I have a 3.5 yr old that still refuses to use ramps, she'll either climb up the side of the cage or just leap to a shelf that's two feet away...
...the last time one of my boys did something like that they were like 6 months old...
Always remember, -BOYS ARE LAZY and GIRLS ARE CRAZY!-
As for the goolies, when they are taken out, you are left with a slight sack baggage, then it will shrink up to a crease. All around I've had very positive experiences with neuters...but I didn't do it for appearances, but behavioral issues...and it worked wonderfully on my most aggressive males.

Maybe I am weird but I actually like my boys balls lol.. I think they are funny
It just enhances their manly cuteness
I felt kinda bad having to neuter my little boys. But I wouldn't neuter my big boys. I am too attached to having them how they are.

Ace is neutered and his skin eventually shrank up.
I think we got a girly man....he is just as active as the girls and he chews EVERYTHING to shreds no matter what it is. He is far more destructive than 2 of our girls combined! He is totally opposite of how most people describe their boys. He is chewing things the girls never touched (all 4 that we have had). He's nervous too. I say Skiddish but my daughter says he's sensitive. Again..Girly Man.

Honestly you get over the...bazookas after the first couple days and then you don't even think about it. Personally, unless I had more females than males, I would rather spay the females than neuter the males just because of the added health benefits of spaying a female. That being said if I needed to I wouldn't hesitate to neuter a boy rattie. I have two boys and personally love it, they can be lazy hammock bums so I don't feel as bad when they are in their cage but also can run around entertaining you while still stopping to cuddle, but that's not every male by any means.

You know, the four boys I neutered turned girly after about a couple of months...maybe because the lack of testosterone...they even started to save and hide their food and make a big nesting mess in their cage.
I agree with susschen22, if I had a choice I would spay my girls...because estrogen is the freaking enemy! Plus you grow to love the goolies, I promise.

OK, I was all about getting my boy fixed. But can someone tell me what an average price is. This is the estimate I got:
$60.00 - Exam
$30.00 - Fecal Exam (Required to check for parasites)
$250.00 - Nueter
Does that sound a little insane? Or is that the normal price for rats?

Good lord... That's definitely way too pricey. Spays don't even cost that much usually! Neuters are more commonly around $50-$120.

Thanks, I knew it seemed too high. I'll keep looking in my area for a vet that will do it.

3 out of the 4 exotics vets here charge approximately $200 for a neuter, which is also including a pre-op exam.
Luckily there is one vet here who I went to that only charges $105.
I don't think $200 is outrageous if there are not a lot of exotics vets in an area and rat surgeries are not common.
Anything more than that though, is pretty insane I will agree.

Really lucky. I even looked at your profile to see if you are near us. I was quoted a few dollars shy of $200 for neuter by our vet.

I've called 7 different places, and it turns out that the vet I go to already charges the most reasonable prices...$150 for everything.
Every place I called (except 1) sees and nueters rats...their prices were still outrageous ($360 for just the nueter? Is that for real?).

I'm in NJ.
I've been wanting to visit Canada...my co-worker is from Canada and she tells me how wonderful it is. Maybe she'll show me around some time.
