Dirty Yellow Skin
«
on:
January 07, 2007, 11:28:39 AM »
Okay, so after I had gone through my crazy vet day with Mac and Manco, the vet had mentioned how Mac's skin (the dirty yellow-ness) could be a sign of mites. Any truth to this statement? Any help appreciated.
*Will try to get a picture*

It sounds like buck grease to me! Try giving him a small cube of bread soaked/dipped in olive oil at least twice a week, and see if that helps clear it up.

Would buck grease be something that shows up on all of them? (They're all male). Because all of them have that dirty yellow color. I've looked through all the information on mites and I didn't find anything about a yellow dirty color.

Many unneutered male rats have buck grease. It's a secretion from their skin that is usually a result of excess testosterone. It has nothing to do with mites as far as I know.

It could be just normal buck grease, or if it's an increase in buckgrease, it could be from stress. But it could be from mites, too--my boys seem to step up production of the stuff when they have mites. So, the answer is maybe? hehe
Buck grease is an orangey-yellow substance usually seen along the spine and hip areas in boys. All boys make it. Usually it's not really noticable, but if it starts to be obvious or more noticable than usual, I try to figure out why.
Wouldn't hurt to treat with kitty Revolution, just in case, especially if they seem to be scratching more lately. The olive oil works great for conditioning their skin and coat, like Pie said.

Thanks for all the info everyone! Yeh, it is a yellow orangey color along their backs. It's not on their tummy or head or anything like that. Would a bath be a good idea to try to clean it off, or should I just treat them and not clean it off? I'm worried that if it is mites, Mac may be in danger. He's been sick and required an emergency vet visit the other day (due to wheezing, labored breathing, and a bulging eye, which are all okay and better now).

Sick rats and mite flare-up often go hand in hand because the rats' weakened immune system gives mites a stronghold. I would treat them. Probably not do a full submersion bathing, but a warm wet washcloth would probably be ok, unless that would freak them out, then I'd just let it go.

Whenever my intact boys were getting greasy, I'd wet them down, rub olive oil into their skin really well, wash them with Dawn dishsoap, and then wash them again with some sort of puppy/kitten shampoo. They would always come out with gleaming white skin and glossy fur

I plan to treat the boys once they're all off their meds. Ivermectrin is the most accessible to me at the current time, so I wanted to ask a few questions about it. Can any of you who have used it before share experiences and thoughts about the paste. What if the other rats are grooming each other and they lick the paste off? Any info and experiences welcome. I'm off to do a search! Thanks in advance!
Here is a link to what I plan on using..

*Sorry about the long link, I have yet to learn how to shorten them

I have never used it personally but I do know that Ivermectin is a paste that is an oral medication, there will be no "grooming off"

You can use the topical kind orally. Tastes like crap, but you can administer it either way.

Okay, so the one on the link I posted is the topical paste? And I can use it orally? ... Still the size of a uncooked piece of rice? I've never used this stuff before, so any suggestions will help a lot! Thanks

That paste is NOT topical. Liquid ivermectin can be used topically or orally. Using the paste is a greater chance of overdose. I stopped using it two or three years ago.
When ANY medication is used for mites, you must be SURE they do NOT groom the other rats while the meds are still wet, or eat their paste (if you use the horse wormer). That's one way to overdose.

The paste is oral. The liquid (eg. Ivomec) is an injectible liquid, that you can give orally (per my vet, w hich I have used). I've never used the paste, but I know you have to squirt all the paste out and mix it up til your arm falls off to make sure it's consistent. Then use an uncooked grain of rice as your comparison for the dose.
I think Ivermectin is a pain in the rear because you have to do it 3 times, clean everything around the rats like mad.
Bleh, too much work for me! hehe I much prefer Revolution. One dose and that's it. Finito.

Actually liquid ivermectin can be given orally, or injected subcutaneously. It doesn't work topically....
Selamectin is the name of the drug in revolution that works with topical application.
Edit: If I'm wrong about the ivermectin can someone please show me where, and the dosages? I would much rather give anything topically included ivermectin but I didn't know it was possible, so I have done orally.

I caught snippets about using liquid Ivermectin topically here and there on the Net but everything I came across said it was poorly absorbed into the skin. I believe Debbie D in her ratfanclub site mentions needing to use it every few days for lice, if you use it topically. I don't care for Ivermectin in any form, so I did not document the sources pertaining to topical administration during my research.
Maybe someone else or their vet has used it this way. Haven't done a recent search on the forum or Internet about it.

I did a forum search and found this. Towards the end of the thread, a member talks about using Ivermectin, topically, per her vet. And it even had dosage info.

When my rats had mites, my vet sold me a single package of kitten revolution for $15 which treated six rats, and I still had a bit left over. Some vets will only sell them in packs of three though, so it might cost some more. My vet was going to sell me the three-pack but luckily they had an opened pack in the back so they sold me a single one
. Good luck!

You can get three or four tubes (I got 4, but I think one was a freebie) of the kitten version for around $30 (it's often sold in multi-packs); which one tube covers 3-5 rats or so. A vet will likely sell a single tube for $10-ish. You can, however, order it online, without a prescription from
www.canadavet.com
(and there it's a multi-pack). I forget what the pricing was, but it was a good deal.
