???I had read that rats need complete darkness for 8 hours.  Does anyone know if this means a continuous 8 hours or a total of 8 hours in one day.  The book also said the there should be no night lights in the room they are in.  I was just curious and checking to see if I am giving them enough.

Also, I bought the 2018 Harlan teklab blocks for my crew and none of them will eat them now.  They just sit in their dishes.  Did I get the wrong one?  There were 3 types listed.  One with higher protein which I read somewhere that high protein is not good for rats so I chose the middle one.  The lower end one said it was not for healthy rats.  All I know is that noone seems to like them.  The one boy had eaten them but now just lets them sit.
Any thoughts?

8 hours dark, 8 hours light Smiley

I bought three kinds of Harlan blocks to test on my crew.  They don't touch the 8604, LOVE the 2018, and I'm still waiting on a bag of the 2016 to get to me.

I don't know if Kim's Ark regularly stocks the 2016, but I got mine from here: http://www.shadowbrookrats.com/ if they don't.

The 2018 and the 8604 smell different, so I imagine you might want to try the 8604 before the 2016... simply because I bet the 2016 smells similar to the 2018.  Does that make sense? lol

Seriously?  I never even thought about that.  I mean, I turn off the lights at night, but I think there's always a night light on.  What happens if they don't get "enough" dark?

what book says this?  I know all life needs regular cycles of light/dark.  it even affects womens' fertility.  but 100% darkness?  creeps me out.  hehe

I don't know what would happen!

I just remember a recent thread where that was the answer posted and agreed upon!

I have a bad habit of staying up all hours of the night with the light on in my room (where my ratties are), but I almost always get 8 hours of sleep.  I wonder if the varied times of darkness effects them at all?

And the other 8 hours?

I agree that all living things need light and dark cycles, but if the night light is just one of those very faint plug in types I can't see it providing enough light to upset anything.  It would be different if you were leaving a lamp on or something, I'm sure.

As for the Harlan.  Are you feeding your rats anything else?  If so, cut everything else out and only give them Harlan.  It sounds a bit mean, but they should eat when they are hungry.  If you are giving them other treats or food they are probably holding out on you in the hopes that something else is still going to be coming.

You can kind of work around the darkness part. Since rats are generally more active during night (although they can and will adjust to YOUR schedule), you can put cages away from windows, in rooms where its generally dark for most of the day (like in an office room and just close the blinds for the day). Giving them a box or something similar also provides them darkness if they need it during day. My girls dont seem to care about light/dark issue as long as there's no direct sunlight or any bright light on them. If rats REALLY cared about being in the dark, they wouldn't sleep in the hammocks lol

I dunno about the dark part...

but...

I was always told that 2014 is the proper Harlan block for adult rats.  That the 2018 or any of the other higher protein ones should be given only to nursing/pregnate does or youngesters.

My guys would always save the lab blocks for last..  they're not all that tastey.  I had one girl always come up and happily take a block given to her, run down to her igloo, stash it and come up for another.  When I cleaned her cage, there were piles upon piles of lab blocks down there.

I've owned and fed both Harlan 2014 and Mazuri 6F.

The Harlan were alot lighter in color, harder in texture, and when they got wet in our hot water heater flood...  smelled like biscuit dough!

The Mazuri (which I'm feeding them now), is much darker in color, a tiny bit softer, and acutally smells like an appetizing food.. kinda like dog food and fish food together.

2014 is good for adult and kinda chubby ratties...I wouldnt say its for 'unhealthy' rats. Depends on what the rest of your rats' diet consists of, I guess.

Actually, 2016 is the recommended diet by HT for adult healthy rats. The 2014 is for very overweight rats.

This is my girl, Belle. Belle is very overweight, and she's slowly losing weight on 2014. Slowly, which is the healthiest way to do it.

I don't post her can pics very often, so please I'd rather not see the "Whoah! That's a big rat!" comments.

2018 is recommended for lactating and pregnant moms, 8604 is actually recommended as a general rodent block (Hamsters, Gerbils, Mice, Rats, etc). If I had healthy adult rats, I'd feed 2016.

why do rat noses fit so perfectly in your ears...

i love her color. i have such a soft spot for orange coloring on a rat (which usually means fawns).

hmmm. eight hours light, eight hours dark, eight hours play?...

rats will adapt to whatever light cycle you have. if you have a night light, and they want darkness, they can always snuggle away in an empty kleenux box. heck, they can even do that during the day. i like to hang two hammocks on top of each other so they can choose if they want to climb between them or lay on top. i also prefer to use my table top lamp instead of the over head light because it creates a more inviting mood for my rats to come out and play in. come to think of it, when i started using that lamp, elise got much braver and joined in free roam time more.

the best thing is to give them options. if you give them access to places with bright lights, also provide places where they can choose to be in dark. sometimes that can be as simple as an empty kleenux box, or a thick towel.

My sleeping schedules change all the time. During uni breaks like now I'm awake until 3-4am. Other times I sleep at 12-1am. I've had my rats in 2 areas of the house- the lounge where they were getting almost constant light, and now the bedroom where they have more natural fluctuations of light and dark. Their awake times are stil the same. They are active when I wake up around lunch time (hehe I know, bad habit) and from about 9pm onwards with a bit of a nap after dinner at 10.30. Playtime is anywhere from 9pm to 2am in a dimly lit room and very active.

Really all I'm saying is you'll probably notice your rats have their own routines and as long as theyre not in really bright places (on shileded window, fluro lighting) and have dark hidey holes they'll be comfortable to adapt to your lifestyle. One of the perks for having rats as pets! I've even found feeding them a few hours late or early doesnt affect them the way it does dogs or cats. Love it!

My rats sleep by my bed during the week when the other bedroom/weight room is being used. (I'd rather they interrupt my sleep than someone else's). I still find it funny that while I'm reading they're usually quiet. Sometimes puttering about, or eating. But when I turn out the light - Whoa! Within 5 seconds they're battering around in the cage, making a racket! The first few times I laughed about it, then it got annoying cuz I kept getting woken up in the night. Now I'm used to it and pretty much sleep through it.
I know. It didn't really answer your question, but the fact that darkness really ramps up their activity tells me they need some kind of darkness each day.
BTW,how DO they run around their cage in the dark without serious injury?

And I feed all my boys 2018, and have for a few years.  Everybody is sleek and shiny and happy.  But, I am a mean mom and really restrict their people food, and rarely give them treats like yogurt drops or other "rat snacks".

I believe the darkness is recommended because as Dolci said, it can affect fertility.  BUT, unless you're breeding your rats, it probably isn't a major deal to be sure they have exactly a minimum of 8 hours of darkness a day.  So, I wouldn't go out and invest in blackout shades or anything...  My boys live in RatLand, which doesn't have an awful lot of daylight, and is always kind of dusky in there, unless I've got the lights on.

I guess I am pretty lucky then!     I have 34 rats in my bedroom, and they are loud and banging around until I turn the light off between 11-12 pm..sometimes earlier.  Within 1/2 an hour its fairly quiet and they have mostly settled down, except the Baby Cage where someone is still running on a wheel...young rats are not considerate of sleep patterns.   Roll Eyes

My boys are out in the living room, near a window actually. They just go burrow under things or into a pocket hammock to get out of the light. Our house gets quiet after about 11 or so at night and the only light is from the street lights outside. I havent noticed my boys bothered by any of this. They are happy and chipper fellas most of the time.

I just realised my guys havent got any dark places to go at the moment as it's very hot and humid so I took their rodey house out after seeing one too many pathetic looking rats slide out of it. But even when it's in there they sleep most of the time in the open. I think the darkness thing is a comfort for rats that arent too sure of their surrondings if their new or just a bit unsure from time to time.

The new little guy sleeps in a pipe all the time but the others sleep in piles in the open.

Our girls' cage sits in the corner of the living room next to a dbl window on one side and a 110" window on the other so the room is very bright during the day until about 4 pm or so then it gets a little murky until the sun drops.  They don't seem to be bothered by the light at all they are up and playing during the day and sleep when they want to.  Once the lights goes out at 11:30pm and I get upstairs the wheel starts spinning and you can hear it most the night.  So for our girls it really doesn't matter to them and I think that might be the point they adapt to your schedule and really just want to be around you no matter the time.

LOL My girls are the same way. They generally wake up when I first wake up in the morning (so they can get their scratches and treats) then they wake up again when I get home. For the rest of the evening, they are sometimes up and about and sometimes just laying there with their eyes open. The moment the lights go off though, the crunching and jumping and redecorating of the cage begins! I do NOT keep rats in the bedroom anymore lol especially young rats...i'm such a light sleeper, every little noise wakes me up.

I read that they need 8 hours of darkness in the "The Rat Care Book" by Debbie the Rat Lady.

It figures, I got the wrong rat blocks (2018) I ordered 10 pounds thinking mine would just love them and gobble them up.  I thought that the rats were not supposed to have blocks high in protein so I went with the lower one but not the 2014 because it said it was not for healthy rats.  Hopefully, they will start eating them for me.

Someone mentioned that their rats "redecorate" at night.  What does every one put in their cages so that they can "redecorate"? Mine must be awfully bored.  They don't do much at all.  I have chew sticks for them that just sit there.  They usually destroy their homemade hammocks by the morning so I guess that is what they do.

My ratties have a wheel to play in and I give them empty paper towel rolls, empty tp rolls, and boxes of kleenex (with the tissues inside).
