So I've been concidering it for awhile now, and finally decided to do it. I downsized my FN to a single story cage. I'm down to 7 rats now (Callie was rehomed with a firend who fell madly in love with her) who all get along wonderfully, and I was tired of cleaning the entire cage. Not to mention that I'm moving back into my parents' place and need to make the rats seem less imposing!

Some pictures of the top and bottom of my FN. I added one of the MRR hammocks to the top and bottom after taking these pictures.

Ricci on top, then Gino, Azzurro and Remo. Bear, my old man (who is 3 this month!) is in one of the hammocks.

Rambo, Papi, Bruschi and Elvis.

I can't be the only one that *hates* trying to tuck fabric or towels under the pans, right? Every time I clean I'm more and more tempted to get plexiglass cut at Home Depot.

Nope, you definitely aren't!  I hadn't thought of using plexiglass instead.  That sounds like a great idea.  It seems like it would be sooo much easier.  Is it expensive??

Tricia your FN's always look so fun!  I love that little Tikes play thing you have in ur cage.  How do you find all that cool stuff?  I'm ordering my FN this week (I'm so excited!!!) so I've been sewing my butt off making things for the spoiled rotten boys that are going in there!  I even went to IKEA today.  Man I love that store!!

Thanks Erika! I spend WAY too much time working on them!  I'm always on the lookout for "stuff" and find ALOT at the dollar stores and IKEA!  I love that store too!  Did you get the hanging baskets, shoe organizers, mini stuffed animals, and some stuffed rats?

I can't WAIT to see your FN!  And I'm so happy you are finally able to get one!  I hope Petite and Polly are doing well!

Pics soon..

I got the shoe organizers and the  mini stuffed animals.  I didn't get teh hanging baskets because I think they had some at my dollar store out here last time I went for cheaper.  I have to go to the Dollar Store this week so I will check and if they aren't cheaper than I will just go back to IKEA.  I still have time seeing that I didn't even order the FN yet.  I just gotta wait until either Tuesday or Wednesday to order it.  First I'm actually going to print out the page from Ferret.com and bring it to Petsmart and cross my fingers while praying that they will price match.  I hope they do because I'm pretty impatient and want to set up the cage right away!!  Atleast the bottom part of it.  My 4 older boys are going in the bottom and my 3 two month old boys along with two new babies from Melissa that I'm getting aroudn St. Patty's day, are going on top.  I'm going to wait until I get the two new babies to put all the babies on top.  I already  have the hardward cloth stuff to modify it.  I'm actually going to unroll it down my hallway for a couple of days before puttin it on the cage so then maybe it won't keep rolling up on me while I'm doing it.  Oh and talking about the FN.  Today after IKEA my hubby, my son and I walked across the parking lot into this HUGE Petland store ( I wanted to see what kind of awesome toys they had there for my babies).  As soon as we walked in I saw it....it was like a light shining down from the heavens....*angels sing* there sat the FN all set up....I was in aw.  I ran over there as quick as I could to check it out and see what their price was. In my head I was thinking that if it was only like $40 or so more than Ferret.com I would get it there so I have it right away and dont' have to wait.  Can you believe they wanted $329.99 for it!!!!?Huh  Are they nuts?!?!?!?!!?

Oh and Petite and Polly are doing wonderful!  They are typical bratty, destructive little girls but they adjusted very quickly.  Luna just loves them to death.  Can you believe that I had them a week today and there has still been not one squeeking match at all?!?!  Petite is even gaining a little weight for me.  I don't think she's going to be too Petite for much longer!! lol

so i finally got a FN, and my lovely mom helped me make liners and a cube thing and some hammocks. and most of the other stuff came from the goodwill or dollar store just to add more fun junk to play with.  i tried to keep it as boyish as possible but i can't help but be drawn to cute yellows and purples. Hyper

it's currently vacant until this wednesday night, that's when i'm getting 4 boys.
( i took the day off work on thursday so i could play with my new ratties hahaha)

Okay so I'm getting ready to order my very first FN!!!!!  I'm so excited.  I just need some help from you guys.  I was wondering if someone can tell me the dimensions of the "shelves" or whatever they are.  I went and got tons of fleece so I'm hoping to make my liners before it gets here so I can have it all set up quickly!!  How big do the liners have to be?  I like the look of the "pillowcase" style I guess...the kind that you don't need the clasps to hold on the fabric....like Birdsong's FN.  Is that the pillowcase style?  How big are they??  Also, I would also like to know the dimensions of the "storage area" under the FN.  I want to get plastic bins under there to hold the extra liners and such...can someone help me out please?

Hello! The shelves liners are 1" tall, and the rest are the same dimensions as the cage. Well, except for the hole in the side. However, I would wait to see if your rats will dig because if you decide to make the pillowcase style, you're using twice as much fleece. Our girls don't pull at the liners, we just folded the ends under and it's been fine. We've used the clips for the small shelves though and they haven't bothered them since.

The opening at the bottom is 34 3/4" x 22 3/4" x 10". Smiley

So I was going to order my FN today but, PETSMART PRICE MATCHED!!!  I'm so excited.  My hubby and I just put it together now and I took a little break from sewing hammocks and such to get on here and share my excitement.  All four of my older boys (who live in two pairs of two and have only been introduced to eachother about 3 times) are going to live in the bottom half.  I set it up and have had them in there about an hour so far with only one tiny spat that lasted a whole 3 seconds and ended with no blood.  I say they are doing good for now!!  I know there are going to have to be little spats here and there to create the hiarchy (sp?). I will post pics as soon as I'm finished decorating the bottom half.  The top half is staying empty until I get my two new boys from PixiesWorld in about 2-3 weeks.  They are going to be introduced to my 3 two month old boys so I'm going to wait until after intros to put all 5 of the babies on top.  I know it works better with a new cage so nobody's smell is in there already.  I'm so excited!!!  Hyper  *runs off to sew more*

I've had my FN since last summer, but I've never gotten around do actually posting pics on here. I just love looking at what wonderful things people have done with their own FNs! Nice work people!

I usually use newspaper as bedding (I checked it all out, so it's safe. Plus I've been using it in this same town for 10 years with no problems) because my rats just love it so much but every once in a while I go on a fleece tangent. What with the weather being so friggen cold here for so long and the fact that I have two nekkid girls, I decided to fleece-out last night. I'll post pics of the result:

Cleaned out the cage! Used the same pink stripe material for the liners and mixed up the toys a little.

Here's the top:

and the bottom:

They LOOOOVE the wheels! We have a Silent Spinner and a wire one. They are almost always both going at the same time. We also took out some things and the girls really like it when there's less stuff in the way. They also love to climb on the cage like little monkeys.  Yellow Cute Laugh

That's cute! It's not something that we would use, but if your cage is in a rat-safe room then I think that is awesome!

I hate it, too! I got super tired of it, so I just tape it to the bottom.  Tongue I want to sew it to make it sort of like a pillow case, or a bed sheet that stretches around. The pillow case seems easier.

i have pillowcase style covers on my trays and shelves, and they stay on really well.

the only thing is the boys somehow get in the pillowcase and all you see is a fast moving bump that's running into stuff under the fleece, lol.

but the pillowcase style works very well.

I was wondering if they made those! I just bought one of those wooden ladders for birds and it hooks nicely to the underside of the cage. My rats seem to appreciate being able to go home when they want to. Smiley
