Yeah,so does mine! But I do think they need running and playing room also.Unless you have rats that are more ''lazy'',of course Wink.I think alot of it is up to each individual rat.I just remember that I've heard to have one sleeping place per rat. And,a good thing to do so that you still have running room,(wthout having tons of hammocks ),is to use hanging pockets (stretchy winter hats work great and are like a dollar used) hanging on the sides of the cage. This area of mine was always empty anyway.

I don't like to cram my cage full of hammocks, I am sure my rats prefer more room to move around over hammocks, they don't even sleep in hammocks, they prefer to chew them to shreds...So I don't see the point. One thing I like to have lots of is cardboard containers/boxes like soda boxes and whatnot..>My rats like those much better, and even though they chew them to shreds as well, atleast the cardboard was free! (A way to recycle it!)

I found for my eleven rats its best to leave the top half of the FN crammed with sleeping areas (they don't like hammocks, so I get creative, a basket is their newest favorite) while leaving the bottom half mostly free to run around in, exercise in the wheel, and eat.  I leave a couple boxes to hide in while eating, but try to leave some open room  for wrestling.  If I don't leave  the free space, but still tons of places to hide and sleep, everyone starts getting argumentative.  Things have been more tense recently, I really don't know how a FN is considered large enough for 12 full size rats  I mainly have tiny rats (200-300 grams) and they are a tight fit!

I agree, I don't think the FN can house 12 full grown male rats. I have 8 in there, and it still looks crammed...The rats are BIG! I think in the future, I only want 6 rats in it. I had 3 males for a couple months, and it was great! The cage stayed clean, the rats enjoyed all the room.

Everyone knows what kind of living space their ratties like. When I first got mine,I heard everyone talking about how much their ratties loved their hammocks,so I went out and bought a ton of them.My boys always just slept in the floor or in their tube. All of them would be piled into one tiny tube.My girls loved their hammocks, but eat them in one or two nights. Now I've started to just quickly and cheaply make the girls extra hammocks,so that it's no big loss when they eat them. And the girls love little hats pinned up high in their cage to curl up in.I always leave plenty of playing and wrestling room in both cages,'cause none of my ratties are the slightest bit lazy! All of my rats love cardboard boxes, too but I cant stand the mess!My boys love really tiny enclosed places, like the ammo pouches and beret I hung up,but still sometimes sleep out in the open with their noses sticking out through the bars waiting for kisses and scritches.I guess they want to make sure they don't miss out on anything!

And,I really don't think that 12 rats should be in this cage either, unless maybe you just have really lazy ,unconfrontational rats that don't mind being around each other in close quarters.I'm sure there are some rats that would agree with that, just not many.I have 4 boys in the top and 3 girls in bottom, and I think that's a good amount of rats to be in a FN.And,I really don't think it's a good idea to keep boys and girls that close together-or even in the same house really. But,we gotta do what we gotta do sometimes. And,I am getting my girls spayed next month.

Honestly with cages like fn's and the larger martins cages I always go atleast 4 less than what the calc says. But i dont have to worry both of my fn 142's only have 3 rats in each and my stacked r680's which can hold seven only has three babies in it lol. i like a lot of room for them so that when someone gets snotty the others can give them their space

You know...I actually do have 12 rats in my FN and I swear the thing still seems huge. All of my rats love to pile on top of each other and since one side is facing the room and the other one the wall....the one facing the wall is always empty. Silly little guys. Anyhow I can see how having all males would be way too tight. I actually have very small rats compared to most people. On average all of my males only weigh 300 and my females about 200.  Undecided I kinda wish they were bigger, but they're still young so we'll see.

Xanterra, your boys are going to LOVE that place!I LOVE that place!I love allof your tubes, cubes and hammocks, and, that thing in the upper right corner is really cool!Everything looks so nice, clean and new!I sure hope your boys don't turn out to be chewers! But,seriously, they'll love it.

Looniecartoonie,I'm sure that your guys are happy or else they'd probally let you know!No 2 rats are the same. Most rats would think that it was too small, though. Most people would probally think that it was too hard taking care of 12 rats, too!you must be a very loving person with lots of patience. And,you're definently not lazy!

Baileyjane, those are snow hats.Out of all the stuff i give my rats, they probally like them the most for sleeping! And the best part is they're only like a dollar at the thrift store! So,my girls can chew as much as they want without fear of idle threats.

Oh boy, you and me both!!  Roll Eyes And thank you! Yes, I love it too, I had a lot of fun decorating it!  Blue Dumbo Smile The cage is actually a lot more colorful in person, the flash on the camera kinda faded some of the colors.

I found a lot of old (barely used) bird toys and stuck them in there (I washed them thoroughly of course), and the hammocks are from Dearpie and Scubbs (she made the one in the upper right corner that you mentioned). I just love them! So colorful and purty.

xanterra: Oh wow!! I don't dare show the babies these pics, because right now they're crammed into a smallish cage. If i show them, i'll wake up to find an empty cage with a sign pinned on it saying "jailbreak: we went to sara's early. nice knowing you!" lol.
But yea, it looks great, they're gonna love it!!

Hmmmm....I actually have my boys FN overpopulated according to the cage calculator, I have 14.  And none of my boys can be accused of being tiny.  I have occasional scraps between Golem, my pew boy and Popkin my agouti rex boy.  This has more to do with Popkin being a completely hormonal 10 month old and Golem being a big baby than lack of space.  During the afternoon when everyone is sleeping, you can't see anybody unless you go poking into hammocks and hanging tubes and boxes.  Then you'll find them all in two or three piles, the makeup of which changes daily.  Except my older nekked boy Bug and my blue hooded Beau.  They are always together at nap time.

My girls are another story.  They like their room and are not as lovey-dovey with each other, but still, if you do it right, you can easily fit 12 girls in the cage, as long as you give them their own areas and lots of room to escape each other.

I can't believe I had to go all the way back to page 3 to find this thread!

I decided to do a slightly themed cage this week - a pink/yellow/orange theme  Cheesy  I'm amazed how many hammocks I had in those colors!  Well, pink's a no-brainer since hello, I'm the queen of pink, but apparently I subconsciously love orange and yellow too!

And here's my FN in my bedroom, taken a couple days ago after putting together my new desk

Go right ahead  Blue Dumbo Smile

I find this much easier to me to work with. I do love the C&C (cube and coroplast) cages at well but when you have limited room and a lot of pigs.. this is definitely the way to go.

Daphne and Delilah are really bad for doing that so I used binder clips and clothespins (clothes pins work best) to clip them. Its working well so far.

Oh Scubbs, how do you do it!    The whole set up looks sooooo homey and PERFECT and DARN IMMACULATE!

Wickerodent!  Wow!  I've never seen it used for pigs either!  So you are happy with the two put together? I decided not to put my two together but to have a play area on top (connected); but I don't suppose that would work as well for pigs... Ratty Smiley

I, too, am convinced your rats don't poop!!  I regularly explain to my rats what the litterbox is for, and they just look at my like, "Yeah, right, Mom" and continue to do their business anywhere they feel like it.

They just look super clean because I take pics RIGHT after cleaning, usually before putting the rats back in the cage  Cheeky  I'm anal about keeping everything in the right place; for instance, I made holes in the all the boxes so I could put hooks through them and attach them to the cage.  I also have about a billion binder clips keeping down the towels/fleece in a vain attempt to keep them from going under them.  I also spot clean 1-2+ times a days, so it stays pretty clean overall.  I think I posted dirty-FN pics once upon a time, actually, for the same reason!  Yellow Cute Laugh

Though, I admit... it's really hard keeping them from going under the towels, when you have a girl (Maddie) who does it purposely to get your attention.  As soon as she hears me groan and get up to fix the fleece/towel, she pops out and gets really excited.  But, I can't help but go over there and fix things, the sound of rats under material practically gives me a twitch.
