There are rats in my house.

Wickedrodent, I LOVE how you put those two FNs together. I may soon be doing something similar.

You've been saying that since I had my double FN!  You should just do it - I know you'll love it, and so will your ratties  Smiley

I know!! lol It just kills me to have to destroy an FN. But I may have too if I want all my rats living together. I have to take in some rats from 3 litters that were dropped on us. My parents went out to pick up 4 rats from a rehome situation, an ad in a paper, you know how it goes... well, two females gave birth. Then another lady called us to take in her rat that was suppose to be male but gave birth and she was a cage buddy from the 4 that we adopted, they were 5 rats living together, 3 females and 2 males.

Well, apparently you can saw off the parts where the wire is connected to the frame, which is only 2-3 pats on each side, so you really wouldn't be destroying it - you'd just have to reattach the wire panels with zip ties.  I just destroyed my cage because I got the idea in my head and wanted it done RIGHT then.

And I can't believe they had 3 females with 2 males  Roll Eyes  Did they even know the difference?

It can be sawed and kept intact? Weeeee!!

I think the lady knew... but she swore to us that they were never together until we talked to her friend.

Lol, Kimmie,  I have 8 in there currently. We lost 2 boys recently. They were older boys. And my dad "rescued" two little baby boys from a feeder bin that I will be getting soon, Qtine is almost over for them. They were maybe 4 weeks old when my dad found them. But I do have room for Zed and Zorro.... Im still trying to convince my Hubby still. I'll let ya know I'm still working on him.

I really love the FNs and I want to get one for my future rats, but I'm not sure I have the space for it.

Is it possible to take it off the wheel base, so it would just be the cage on the floor? And if so, would anyone be willing to give the height measurement of the cage (without the wheelbase)?

Thanks!

I don't have a FN, but I noticed that everyone puts litter boxes in the same place - so the bottom of the ramp is sitting in them. Just wondering why that is? And did you all come to that decision separately or is there some kind of cult I'm not aware of?

I keep the pan that way so they don't dump it and drag carefresh all over the cage. The ramp holds it in place.

Thanks wickedrodent! Could anyone tell me the height of the cage without the weels though? Just from where the pan starts to the top of one level. Thanks in advance!

I believe its approx. 4' without the stand.

I have my ratties FN (without wheels) sitting up on top of a 3' dresser and it comes right up to the top of the door way. So.. that would be about right.

Here in Australia we can get the FN however the cost is HUGE, so a local company is getting us Ferret Kingdoms in instead, and I LOVE this cage. It is the size of the FN, with the quality of the FN but with smaller bar spacing  Smiley  I easily put my 4/5 week olds in there when I am seperating them from their mothers.

This is it with no accessories. I use towels as liners, and have found these clips which work GREAT to hold them on to the liners. They are like the "bulldog" clips others on here use (sorry not sure what you call them over in the US but thats what we call them here) but instead of having the arms that pry them open they dont, they are just the clip, and you use a little tool that comes with the clips to apply them. They stay on far better then the other clips, and come off for reusing really easily. I got them at out local Officeworks, so I am sure that they can be found anywhere.

This is the top half door closed.

You Always Widdle On The One You Love

WWW
« Reply #1347 on: May 25, 2008, 09:28:21 AM »

I have been wanting to get some metal pans for my FN for a while now and have been putting it off as I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to do.  Well my girls decided to force my hand and make me make a decision very quickly when they decided that chewing huge holes in the pans was great fun!  Thank god no escapees while I sorted out the mess.  So my hubby does sheet metal work for a living so I begged and pleaded with im to make them for me.  Actually it wasn't that hard.  He is more than happy to oblige my every comand  LOL!  Well Ryan made them for me on Friday and so yesterday I worked on the cages and got them all set up.

But first I decided that since it was a nice day and since these were nice new pans I wanted the cages to be spotless.  It had been about 6 months since I had taken the FNs outside and power washed them.  Gunk was starting to build up in the little cracks and crevices that you just can't get to no matter how hard you try.  So both cages went outside and got drenched in vinegar and power washed.  They are nice and clean!!!

So here are pics and a vid of the cages all set up with the pans installed.  You will notice the cages are sparsly decorated.  I am starting to go with the minimalist approach with cage decorating these days.  I find that when I fill the cage the rats don't even touch half of the stuff I put in it so screw it.  I am not going to waste my time on it any more.  Just put in what I know they will like and use.  Less to clean and less to hang.  Call me a mean rat mommy if you want to!  LOL

First the girls cage:

Video of girls cage:

Boys cage (sorry no vid.  Was getting entirely too exhausted at this point and had to call it a night once I got them settled in)

They are great clips and hold everything real firm, I love them and they have been so much easier than the other style I was previously using.
As for the bottle ends, I sell them at my work, (Petstock) and they are readily available here in Australia. They fit any coke, fanta, water bottle, almost every drink bottle, and it means I always have clean bottles. Rather than clean the bottles, I throw them out every fortnight instead and replace with new ones. Everyone collects them for me so I never run out and always have a fresh supply.  Smiley
