*UPDATE*  Noel WILL be fixed, next week actually.  Cita and Winter will have to wait their turns respectively to meet Mr. Snip Snip.  As of right now, ALL 3 rats are in their own cages.  Noel is in an escape proof cage (NO, she's not that tiny, just very squishy) and I doubt I will return her to Cita as Cita is very aggressive with her and *HAS* drawn blood.  Ms Cita will most likely REMAIN alone due to this fact.  I will give Noel the option to move in with Winter if she chooses after she's recovered.  As for studly Winter, yes he's also alone, but he's never in his cage in the first place (when he's awake), he's always out being held or just wandering about, so a companion for him is out of the question right now.  I don't think I'm being cruel at all.  I love my rats and they get LOTS of attention.  I also buy good food and lots of fresh fruit and such, but I think 3 rats in my household is MORE than enough.  Thank you everyone for your advice!
*****     *****     *****     *****     *****     *****     *****     *****     *****     *****     *****     *****

We were gifted an adorable baby girl we named Noel (approx birthday 11/21/2006).  Darling girl showed an early aptitude for escaping.  After losing her a couple times and finding her in our older girl/Cita's cage (happy and snug) we decided to let her stay in there.  She still likes to take "walk about" and every morning I come into the room to telltale signs she's been out (action figures and Breyer's in disarray).

On January 20th we adopted an albino boy from Petco (he was dropped off by his former owner).  Winter is cuddly and loving and everything you could ever want in a rat.  And apparently quite the host.

See, stupid us (darling husband and I) didn't think she'd dare to enter Winter's cage.  No...why would she do that?      Well, surprise, surprise surprise, guess who I found enjoying the round spin-ey fun of Winter's exercise wheel?  With Winter looking on?  Yes, my darling Noel.

We've had Winter for 10 days now, and they seemed quite happy in each other's company.  *sigh* I can only assume they've...well, YOU KNOW (I believe the word "canoodled" has been used in these parts).

SOOO...now, pregnancy watch commences; and pregnancy reading and pregnancy talking.

I have no business making baby rats!  I also can't afford to have either of my darling's fixed.  In a few weeks, a month or more yes (that horrible spectre FINANCES).  I'll inquire with the local (trusted) pet store if they'll take a litter of weaned babies, just to be safe.  That is...assuming they arrive, arrive safely, live and I can bear to part with my first grandchildren.

So please, commence with the advice, condemnation or sympathetic pats on the back.  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

Kerfuffle is my heart rat!

Aww!  The little, sneaky girl!

Perhaps if you post in the Adoption forum here, you could find some homes for some of the possible babies.

Also, I think if you do a search on "Pregnancy" or the like, you should be able to find tons of helpful information about how to take care of the expecting mother (things like feeding her extra protein, preparing a tank for her to have her litter in with lots of baby-safe nesting materials, etc).

Good luck!  And tell that stinker to stop getting into trouble!  Heart

Could you afford to get her spayed?  Have some wonderful health benefits for her, and will save any future problems and no little babies getting stuck at the pet store.

What kind of cages are you using that they can enter and exit at will? kind of defeats the purpose of a cage, doesn't it?

I would really consider getting her a better cage or getting her spayed.  As soon as she has babies, the first thing she is going to do, is go back to Winter to recommence the "canoodling".  Getting her spayed now, will remove the babies so you dont have to bring them to a petstore, and this way, you can keep her and Winter together with no future issues.  Did you call your vet just to get an idea on how much it would cost to get it done?  The health benefits in female ratties is huge, especially if done while young.  Please keep us updated on what you decide! And good luck Smiley

All of them (Winter & Noel/Cita) are in a Super Pet for rats cage.  She squishes through the bars.  We went out and bought a smaller cage, with smaller bar separation and she still squished.  Today we're going to buy a glass aquarium.  A) in case she's preggers B) to keep her from Winter whether she is or not and C) we've been wanting to anyway because we feel Cita is being to aggressive with her.  I'm also going to call the vet to check the cost of she-spaying.  Preventing pregnancy is a good enough reason, but if it just generally makes her healthier and keeps her here with us longer, I'm definitely all for it.

Wow she must be really small if she can get through 1/2" bars, and really determined.

Something to consider too, is that raising a litter isn't necessarily cheaper than a spay, especially if you end up not being able to part with the grandchildren.

I really recomend getting her spayed. Right now hubby and I wish we had spayed Ruby. It is supposed to really help with mamary tumors in the girls. I don't know about the costs where you are, but here, a spay costs less than even a single tumor removal, and Ruby, like many girls, ended up needing two tumors removed. In the long run, it really does make a good investment.

I really suggest having her spayed, too.  A spay ends up being a less money than raising and caring for a litter especially if you can't home them.  If you send the babies to the pet store, you have no way of knowing what kind of homes they'll end up in, plus they may very well be sold as reptile food.  Plus, spaying has a lot of health benefits for females - it decreases incidence of mammary and pituitary tumors, which are very, very common.

We got her a new cage today, it'll be up within the hour.  I'm going to call around Friday to find vets in our area who spay rats.  Though the idea of being a "grandparent" is appealing, I have no business bringing baby rats into the world.

I really want to thank everyone for the advice and the helpful admonishments.  Noel would thank you too.  Though Winter probably wouldn't (cue porno music). *wink*

Its also well worth it to talk to your vet about a payment plan.  Explain the situation and many will be sympathetic.  A payment plan over a couple months can really make things affordable.

Wait, so you have the two females, and the one male? Why did you get the boy if you have girls? Huh

Anyway, I think spaying both girls would be a great idea. That way no one has to be lonely Smiley It sounds like spaying both girls and neutering the boy would be financially pushing it, or impossible, but if you can just do the two girls...you'll probably save vet money in the long run, anyway Smiley

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I don't understand your question about why I got a boy if I had girls already, so I don't know how to answer.  They (the two girls and the one boy) aren't (intentionally) caged together, Noel just snuck into Winter's cage.  If you're asking why I got Winter in general if I already had the two girls....well, I wouldn't have understood that either.  I got him cus I fell in love with him?  With his great personality?  The poop down my cleavage really won me over!  Wink  Could you elaborate on what you're wanting to know?

There will certainly be one "fixing", and that will be Noel - for the just in case.  Winter & Cita will most likely follow suit.

Just let me know what you meant by that first question and I'll try to answer.

Sorry I wasn't clear!

Anyway, you said you don't really have the money for a neuter...So why did you adopt a male rat, who now has to live alone (unless you get spays/neuter done) since you have girls and can't house the three together? Basically, why adopt the other rat knowingly he would have to be solitary?

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm attacking, I'm just curious, as you seem to know rats need to have company seeing as you have two girls.

Nope, I don't see it as attacking.  Truthfully, "fixing" my rats was never even a thought.  I don't know anyone who owns rats and only just FOUND this community so my detail experience is lacking.  Yes, I've had Rats for a few years now, but somethings just never come up (like working in retail and taking a Diner's Club Card!).  Also, it just NEVER occurred to me to cage boys and girls together in general.

Explanation starts here: We had one rat (LaLa - we didn't name him, he was a second hand rat) and one cage.  When we lost LaLa we got Rufus (another second hand rat).  In short order we got Charlie Blue Dumbo Smile (yet ANOTHER second hand) but she came with her own cage.  So now we had two rats, two cages.  Cept Charlie's' cage was MUCH bigger than Rufus', so we went and bought him a new cage.  2 rats, 3 cages.  But, the law of rats says if you have an extra cage, you MUST fill it.  SO...we got Cita.  3 rats, 3 cages.  *sigh*  We lose Charlie; 2 rats, 3 cages.  We decided we can't bear the pain of losing rats so often, so we decide to stop with two and we donate the original, small cage.

Ya still with me?  There's more.  2 rats, 2 cages.  We lose Rufus.  1 rat, 2 cages.  We are given Noel for Christmas.  2 rats, 2 cages.  Except she wants to live with Cita...ok, 2 rats in one cage, 1 extra cage.  We adopt Winter, his cage is WAY to small for such a big boy (3 rats, 3 cages, 1 extra), so his cage goes to the Humane Society.  3 rats, 2 cages.

So ends my saga.  It was an epic for sure.  Did it make sense?  Explain things?  I hope so...I'm going for more coffee!  Hee hee  Blue Dumbo Smile

Why dont you just neuter the boy, so all three can live together.  That way you only have to pay for one?  I have two neutered boys living with two intact girlies and they get along great!

I'm not going to copy all of that but I was wondering the same thing VegetarianPetLuvR!
Are you aware that rats NEED same species company Huh If you don't get two of the three rats fixed so they can all live together you are going to need to get a male friend for winter. It is cruel to force rats to live solitary. I'm really shocked that your girl has managed to escape so many times, how small is she? I've never had any rat squeeze through the bars, not even 5 week kittens. As for your girl I agree with everyone else in that it would be cheaper to get her spayed than to deal with raising kittens, finding them homes, and supplying them and the mother with adequate food before and after birth. I don't see how it could possibly be an option for them to be sent off to the petshop, but who is to guarantee that you'll be able to find them homes? I spend $40 a month just on DRY food for my 9 rats, and atleast $15 a week additional on fresh fruits & veggies, and meat - so $100 a month JUST to feed them. Shocked 2.
Where are you located incase you end up not getting her fixed? Maybe there are people in your area that would adopt some of the babies.
