gerbil food is too much like hamster food which is all wrong for rats, I would give him adult cerial (like: cheerios, total, etc) any fruits and veggies, if you have a good quaity dog food lying around that would be ok, or oatmeal... cant think of anything else right now.... i'm sure some other people will chime in with more options

Fruits, veggies, cooked or uncooked pasta, crackers...etc. I wouldn't use the hamster/gerbil food. Most things you have around your house will be ok for your rat to eat for a few days. Smiley

With the cereal, they're referencing the Suebee Style diet which is what many ppl feed their rats.

In all reality, it's much cheaper in the long run than the petstore seed mixes.  My bases are puffed rice and wheat.  You can find those in the cheap-cereal bags.  At Kroger, one bag is 75cents.  At Walmart, they have offbrand Total for less than $2. Wheat and rice chex are also great.  For the dog food part, I feed Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul dog food.  You can't find it at petsmart or petco, but some feed stores and Pet Supplies Plus sells it.  A 5lb bag runs about $6-7.

As to your questions..  The Oatmeal can be cooked or left dry.  They don't care.  Don't put milk on it though, as it will mess with their bellies.  Kix cereal is not the best thing to feed, as it contains lots of sugar.  Gotta remember that rat's can't brush their teeth.

What do ya'll eat for dinner?  A chicken wing from KFC is a wonderful dinner for them.  My guys get bits of steak, rice, veggies. ect..  whatever we don't eat at dinner.  My mom's commented that we don't even need the food disposer at all because of my ratties.
